Title: Joomla 1.0.13 - SMF 1.1.4 - Bridge 1.1.7 - Where is the problem?
Post by: snoopy_virtual on October 02, 2007, 09:37:46 AM
Hi

I've been very busy all summer with a site where I haven't got anything installed (no forum, no CMS, etc) just pure PHP. So I didn't know about all the problems with GPL and non-GPL licenses that everybody else has been talking about all over the web in the last few months.

A few days ago I thought it was time to start updating the sites where I have Joomla and SMF working together (just now I have 9 web sites with these 2 programs).

I started with one site where I had Joomla 1.0.9 - SMF 1.1.RC3 and Bridge 1.1.6 (I know... I should be updating things more often, but unfortunately I can't work more than 24 hours a day  ;D )

I went to Joomla and SMF main sites and downloaded and installed in that particular site Joomla 1.0.13 and SMF 1.1.4

I thought it was odd I couldn't find an update for the bridge (I know now why but didn't know it at the time because I hadn't search the forums yet) but luckily I had a copy of the Bridge 1.1.7 that I had used for another of my sites, so I updated the bridge as well.

Anyway I wanted to know what had happen with the SMF-Joomla bridge. Searched the forums and I had one of the biggest surprises of my life. There are hundreds of posts about the subject, not only in SMF and Joomla forums, but all over the web.

I don't want to talk here about that as it's already beening discussed in so many different places.

I just wanted to know one thing I don't understand:

I've read in a lot of these posts that since Joomla released version 1.0.13 Orstio's SMF-Joomla bridge is not working properly.

As I said, it was only a few days ago when I updated in one of my sites Joomla, SMF and the Bridge to versions 1.0.13 -  1.1.4 and 1.1.7 respectively and in this site every thing seems to be working OK.

I've been checking every thing I could think about (login in and out, registering new test users, etc). I've been checking also the differences in the code between Joomla 1.0.13 and older versions, etc, but I can't see a problem nowhere.

What is it supposed to go wrong with Joomla 1.0.13 and the bridge?

Are you sure it's supposed to be a problem?

I have another 8 web sites that I need to update, but I don't want to do it untill I find out if there is a problem or not.

Joomla 1.0.13 does not work with the bridge.
Joomla coders changed the way joomla hashes the password in 1.0.13 (since this was after SMF indicated that we would not continue development on the bridge, there is no update)

Kindred I undertstand you are so pessimist but you know, if there is just one soltion I have to test it ?

My 16000 users can't change their behavior for joomlaboard in one day and I prefer try to find a solution not to leave and destroy smf.

Hope you undestand this ?

I am not a pessimist. I answered the question clearly and concisely. Sorry if you don't want to accept the answer, but that's how it is.

The point is: There is no solution that has been created. Even if there was a solution created, it would be illegal to distribute it.

My solution: either stay with Joomla 1.0.12 or switch to mambo 4.6.2 and the mambo-smf bridge.

There is a mild "solution" on the Joomla! side. Replace the password files with the ones from 1.0.12. As long as no one has changed their passwords (forcing them to the new way of storing), it should work okay. However, you'll lose whatever fixes were made to that file.

Password files?

Sorry for not being clear. That's what I get for posting from work quickly in-between tasks.

The files that manipulate the password. If you undo the password changes to those files directly or replace with the ones from 1.0.12, they should then revert to the old password behavior. They are components/com_registration/registration.php and components/com_user/user.php. Not sure if registration is used directly when the bridge is installed, so you might just need to replace user.php.

At the very least, I've heard that will fix the password issue. You'll still need to investigate the alternatives at some point, however.
