Hi all...
I downloaded smf2 beta which is available only for charter members... :o :o :o
Now going to install.....
NiKi,
What do you mean you downloaded the beta? Anyone distributing SMF 2.0 is doing so illegally so I would ask you to:
1) Explain how you got SMF 2.0 by PM.
2) To delete it as you are effectively handling stolen goods which is an illegal activity certainly within the UK and US.
Failure to response will, at the very least, result in a full ban on your account here. Please bear in mind we all work extremely hard to SMF and activities such as this are a real slap in the face for the team.
Regards,
Grudge
Well i've just done a quick google research and found 2 download links to SMF beta 2 , I have also found the user who is pirating it on these forums. And i have also checked the download file and i can say with certainty it is the Full SMF 2.0 Beta 1 package.
Will PM Grudge now with the Details.
Just on a side note. I was a CM until 2 or so weeks ago , I plan to become a charter member again as i soon as i have the money , However i still have SMF2.0 beta on my computer , Just wondering should i remove it from my computer untill i renew my CM account?
- Alan
Alan - if you obtained SMF 2.0 as a Charter Member then you are fine to continue using it after your account expires.
I really hope you catch them and stop them.
Exactly why these things should not be private.

You are a charter member... wow... <sarcasm>Did not expect that from you</sarcasm>. Because eventually some guy leaks it. Same with tons of things.

Things will always be leaked. We have charter membership so we don't deal with thousands of people on the buggy BETA.
I clearly do not see why people would want to upgrade to 2.0 anyway with no theme choice or barely any mods. I only upgraded to get out some of the bugs and I know how to edit the default theme so..

So you are saying you cant port any mods/themes?
People are just too impatient. Anyone caught using an unauthorised copy of SMF 2.0 will be dealt with accordingly.
I wont be surprised it Beta 2 isnt publicly announced.

Well dub yeah. Nothing can be ported. Most themes and mod have to be rewritten.

By that argument software companies should never sell their products because you can always get them from illegal sites too.
As said above the whole reason why we have a private beta is to allow us to better manage the testing process. Whilst I have no problem with people who disagree with that view I do find it hugely disrespectful for people to go against our wishes when, at the end of the day, we give them everything here, and our time, for free.
At the end of the day if someone wishes to download and install any illegally distributed version of SMF then all fool them. There will be no support for them here, there is no down grade back to 1.1 and all updated themes and mods are only available to Charter Members here. Anyone who is found to be operating a 2.0 site who is not (or has not been) a Charter Member will have their accounts here suspended and their hosts contacted.
Bear in mind also that at current time we do not do this, but if I really wanted to I could trawl through the apache logs of our webserver here and find the domain of every single 2.0 SMF site available on the internet (As all sites request copies of xml and javascript files from this site, passing the version as a variable so we serve up the relevant data) - cross reference it with our Charter Member database and start the process of contacting every single one of their hosts.
Put simply - why can people just wait until we are ready to release? It all comes back to the question of respect - respecting the views of the people who put so many hours, days and years of their life into providing something for free with no personal reward to themselves.
End of rant...

Be patient. It's only the first beta. Only those who actually have access to the beta are able to make mods and themes for it, and not all of those people want to do it - 2.0 is much different than 1.1 in terms of code, and the new database stuff makes it even more complicated because PostgreSQL and SQLite don't necessarily do things the same way as MySQL.
If you choose to use 2.0 on a production forum, then you should be willing to live with the bugs and lack of themes/mods.

Although this is true, make sure you also show your interest (nicely) for 2.0 versions of your favourite mods. Noone's actually asked me to port my mods to 2.0 yet, so there's little point in me starting.

I'm currently working on a time machine, once I do, then I'll make all my mods with time dilation ;)
LainaaAlthough this is true, make sure you also show your interest (nicely) for 2.0 versions of your favourite mods. Noone's actually asked me to port my mods to 2.0 yet, so there's little point in me starting.
i feel the idealism is that non-team and charter members don't have access to 2.0, thus CAN'T upgrade their mods -- people do not generally know that SMF friends have access to 2.0
All I have to say is send me the address of everyone using 2.0 illegally and I'll go fight them, haha nah, but I agree whole-heartedly with the concept of the Charter Members, which by Christmas I'm going to become one :), it helps to support and finance the software and reward the makers for their awesome work, while also allowing them to give free software to many others! I hope everyone using smf 2.0 illegally gets theirs.
As a further note, please be careful if you are trying to find a leaked copy or you just download SMF from a different site from ours. It wouldn't be hard for someone to add a backdoor to the code, then distribute the copy illegally to users who are way too eager for software. Suddenly, that person now has systems they can easily access for whatever purpose they want.
Do yourself a favor and only get the copies from us or your web host (assuming they are an authorized redistributor - fantastico is, for example).
Also, if you see sites offering any SMF download (SMF itself, our bridges, etc), contact us at info (at) simplemachines.org with a link to the location so we can take steps to get those copies removed and keep you safe.
Yeah... lol a bit of Jscript a bit of PHP... boom there you go embedded keylogger and cookie stealing.
So do not trust SMF being distributed at other sites. Especially illegal copies.
