Installed and its working fine in custom theme :)
I think that one may only adjust the sources so it may not need manual edits.
ok kool .. tought it was a feature of 1.1.4 were it installs mods to whichever theme your using ... that feature gonna be in 2.0 right ?

Yep SMF 2.0 will attempt to install mods for all themes :)
Nice .. now ill be able to install more mods faster.
will new 2.0 themes have to be made by authors ? or existing themes will work just the same without probs ?
You'll need entirely new themes.

The installer will attempt to upgrade themes so they should work but any new features will need to be added in

A couple of things I can think of at the moment (there are probably a lot more):
-- SMF 2.0 has a global menubar in Subs.php. Your custom theme would not be updated to use this.
-- Because of the above you would not get a moderation button appearing on your custom theme
