Title: A Spooky SMF Contest
Post by: Thantos on October 23, 2007, 11:30:41 AM
Simple Machines is pleased to announce the start of a new contest just in time for Halloween!

Everyone needs to get their favorite pumpkin or other gourd and their carving tools ready because we are having a Jack O' Lantern (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack-o'-lantern) carving contest, SMF style.

The rules are simple:
The uploaded pictures will be put into a location that is unaccessible.  On October 30th the team will go through the submissions to check to make sure they meet the requirements.  The team will not be voting on the submissions at that time.  On October 31st the script at http://www.simplemachines.org/halloween/ will start to allow voting.  Voting will be open to all forum members in good standing.  You will score each submission on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the best.  The submission with the highest score wins.  Each person will see the submissions in a random order.

Prizes
The top 5 winners will receive a SMF T-Shirt.

Our grand prize winner will also receive a gift from our friends over at O'reilly (http://www.oreilly.com/).  More information on that later!
More Info:  The winner will get to select 1 book from either O'Reilly, No Starch, Pragmatic Bookshelf, Rocky Nook, YoungJin, PC Publishing, or SitePoint.

Carving blades ready?
And go!

We would like to take a moment to remind everyone to be safe while carving your pumpkins.  While fake blood is permissable on your Jack O' Lantern we would really perfer that you keep the real stuff in your body.

I would assume that team members and SMF Friends (and those on Hiatus of course) would be prohibited? If that's the case (as it rightly should be in my humble opinion) is there a means to create/upload/share but to be excluded from the contest?

Just as a note people, If you're going to use the second attachment as a guide, you don't need to carve the text too. :P

So basically we have to carve the entire logo (triangle, hole in middle, plank etc) into the pumpkin? And it basically has nothing to do with a Jack O' Lantern because we're not carving the face, teeth, eyes etc.

Sorry if that doesn't sound right ^^^ But you say we're creating a Jack O' Lantern but you don't exactly want us to make the Jack part :S :D

You pretty much got it, but I see the need for the hole in the fulcrum. :P

So, yes make it into a Jack O' Lantern.  Just make sure that it uses the logo.  Mine has eyes, nose, mouth, etc.

At the same time if you just want to carve the logo into a pumpkin and do nothing else then fine.  Use your creativity.

As for the "hole" in the lever don't worry about it.  If you are skilled enough to put one in then fine but I'm not going to worry about that.

Ohhhhh you basically mean use the logo to create the face itself. Now I get it.

No offense but you lot talk too posh.... Lucky I can use Google, otherwise I'd have no idea what a "fulcrum" is :P

You aren't limited to a face.  You can carve whatever you want.  You just need to have the logo in there.

Well we got some more details from O'Reilly and the grand prize is pretty sweet.  The winner will get to select 1 book from either O'Reilly, No Starch, Pragmatic Bookshelf, Rocky Nook, YoungJin, PC Publishing, or SitePoint.  How sweet is that?

Oooh! I already have a good idea. Obviously I don't need a shirt, so if by lucky chance I get in the top 5 I'd totally be willing to give up my prize. :)

Due to lack of submissions we are having to cancel this contest.  Hopefully next year we can give you all more time.  We really want to give out that book so don't be surprised to see a different contest in the not too distant future.
