As a present surprise this morning, in my e-mail was a message from the Fantastico (http://www.cpanelthemes.com/fantastico.php) team letting us know that as of last night SMF can now be auto-installed by their product. "Fantastico is the leading autoinstaller for CPanel servers with more than 13,000 installations, accessible by more than 1 million webmasters." If your host supports CPanel and has Fantastico installed, you should now be able to install SMF with only a few clicks. If your host does not support Fantastico, you should let them know about it and the fact that many providers (http://netenberg.com/partners.php) give it to hosts for free. Once again, we'd like to thank the Fantastico team for their great product and choosing to include SMF with it.
Sweet!
Wonderful!
Fantastic! ;)
Great news.
Glad to hear it... hopefully we can bother them to update it sometime after the 1.0 release...

Awesome! Also, I'm bothering my host to upgrade! ;)

Actually, I hate CPanel's file manager. I prefer to use Net2FTP (http://www.net2ftp.org/beta) ;)
Congrats!
I think that SMF team deserve this! :)
After today's update of Fantastico we also offer SMF to
our customers on all our servers.
I hope we soon will can to offer and New (SMF 1.0) version. ;)
Finally... ;)

Both YaBB SE and Invision are disabled for the reasons that they are unsupported and could contain possible security holes (but cannot be updated, if they do.) They are only shown, apparently, if someone has already installed them.

oh this will really help me out!!!
I would also like to add that GoDaddy.com is also using SMF in their own self install script for there hosting service (at least when I was hosting with them) ;)
And Lycos Webcenters all around Europe also propose SMF in their fast script installation 1-Click-Site.
Wow, so it just shows that word is getting around on how great SMF is!
That's GREAT!... Fantastico!
jeje :)
Glad to hear that.. SMF deserves it :)
What really impressed me is that fact that they have taken SMF onboard whilst still at Beta stage
I think that speaks volumes about the project and the Dev Team.
Well done to you all ;D
why being so happy by that news, usually those hosting co that use fantastico , allow us to install OLD version of those various forum, which we have to update manually, so what's the big news anyway... :D
it is a good news for SM ... but useless for most users as they will be installing old versions...
/me wonders if they are going to update Fantastico sharpish with the 1.0 Final release...
They already have I beleive.
How often does Fantastico update?
Not sure Trekkie, but they certainly have updated :)

If Fantastico offers the option... it may be a good idea to use it. But, I haven't used it so I can't say anything either way.

When I installed SMF via Fantastico, I didn't notice any way to update through the same application. I think you may have to do it via the Admin CP.
one thing is certain, you look for a cheap hosting co... you'll get what you pay for, fantastico will not be fantastic at all..
old myphp version, old mysql version , old forum versions. name it they got it, Museum pieces.
If anyone have the name of Great hosting companies that have the latest versions of all softwares, name them... the list will be very short..
Wow, I'm impressed by SMF. I have been a phpBB user and am tired of having to install all the mods manually. However, I do make phpBB Pre-Modded packages for the phpBB community. Anyways, in responce to the hosting service providers. I must say http://elitehosting.biz is by far the best company I've seen. I am currently using their service. It's cheap, reliable, stable, and constantly updated.
Hope that helps.

interesting - we install fantastico deluxe on our servers and we now only see phpbb2 as the only discussion board - fantstico De Luxe 2.8.2 r11
We do offer to install any software for clients - but if SMF was in our fnatsico we wouldnt have so many IVP problems. Is SMF still supposed to be in fantastico?

this is not a plug as suggested above - merely wondering why our installs dont show SMF in our fantastico builds - as a comment above this would make us seem to be a "cheap host" :-)

I believe some people consider it swearing if it is used in a certain manner
You used Gods name in an inappropriate manner. While some people use it passively, some people remain offended by it. We must remember we span several countries, languages, and religions and in doing so we must do our best to respect everyone. It was just a heads up :)

Are we saying now that non-christians are excluded from using the word "God" ?

Most people consider using the lord's name in vain to be swearing. I wouldn't exclaim "Allah" or anything else either - that would be just as bad.

Nobody is making a huge deal out of it Fizzy...it's just been requested to not use it in that manner if at all possible because it does bother some people here - I personally never use the Lord's name in vain and teach my son the same thing.
So, lets all go back to our usual fun ways :)
That's fine by me guys, as I said, I have no problems respecting other people beliefs or religions.
Being an agnostic as I am it makes it hard to understand the thought process which was why I asked, but if using the word is frowned upon then you certainly won't get any complaints from me, I'm happy to go with the flow on this :)

Turn off php's safe mode, if you don't control your server then your server's sysadmin will need to do it.
wait, how do you turn if offf? thanks for replying to my query... ;)
That is more likely a permission that is not set correctly. You can fix this via your FTP client. SMF works fine with safe mode enabled.
The package manager, however, does not unless PHP suExec is used at the same time.
-[Unknown]
I installed smf through fantastico. I do however prefer to use the installers that the software provides because it is much nicer looking than text boxes on a white background. Like the nice looking installer Mambo provides for instance.
I just installed SMF manually, I also used Fantastico to install SMF, but still , the same problem occurs everytime I try to apply a Mod.

I'm sorry, this is not something reinstalling or reconfiguring will change. The next major version of SMF (1.1) will hopefully fix this issue, but until then you'll either have to ask your host to turn off safe mode, or apply mods manually.
-[Unknown]

Golden Rule -
Always take a back up first!
Any good mod should come with a read me file - following the instruction in there to the letter and you should be fine - step by step:
Download any files that need to have changes made to them using FTP
Make changes to the files using a text editor like Notepad by following the instructions in the mod file
Upload the changed files to their correct locations on the server
Upload any additional files included in the mod
Execute any files that make changes to the database structure
You should then have a working modification.
If the mod fails for what ever reason then re-upload the backup files and report any error messages in the thread started by the mod writer :)
I use SMF from Fantastico in my cpanel, and i love it. Great work SMF staff and coders, and people
Exactly how i found SMF.
Was using phpBB2, and thought i would what this "SMF" thingy was like.....what a revelation!
Am now in the process of converting from phpBB2 to SMF!
Sweet.Wonderful To Hear That.
Good for you Padfoot :D
I'm sure you won't be disappointed :)
I install SMF using Fantastico, but changelog.txt and changelog-themes.txt are always missing, and I have to add them manually for forum upgrades and modifications, which is easy enough, but I have to be sure of installing from the same SMF version as Fantastico install for the upgrades to work. - This all works fine, but can someone tell me why these files are missing, and what are their significance? I've never installed an SMF forum without using Fantastico, so have nothing to compare with.
Thanks.
They simply list the changes which were made in alll the releases.

Im also having problems with fantastico (When i cant be bothered to do it manually)
--My username is Blank. (The admin account i set up in fantastico)
Its like Hey,,You have I mean ists easy enough to fix, just intersteing
That's because you neglected to fill that field in when creating the forum in Fantasico. I've done the same thing myself.
It is only your display name though, and you can create that in your profile.

I installed a fresh copy the other day in less than 5 minutes. The only ****** I had is that it was v 1.02 and not 1.03. Other than that it went through flawlessly. Cpanel is the 'only' way to go. I have used several others with different hosting companies and I like it the best of all, so far.
Glad to hear that Fantastico is doing SMF. I found out last night by accident, when I was installing a PHP script for my site. Dont see why they dont remove phpBB too, that sucks, SMF rocks!

You might want to tell your host to update their fantastic ;).
Hmmm... in reading these posts it seems that Fantastico, or rather the version that is being hosted, my vary from one host to the next. I installed SMF through Fantastico and it took maybe 7 minutes because I had to get up and get another beer in the middle...lol... anyway, thinking of converting from phpBB to SMF on all my boards, just giving it a test run for now though.
Ello all
I've read loads about SMF and from what it seems SMF is the way to go.
I currently run PhpBB for the ACE forums, which is quite heavily modded although most of which is now deactivated through the ACP.
If I use Fantistico to install SMF, would I still have to do the conversion myself or does fantastico actually do the conversion too?..I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'm just curious...lol
If the conversion still has to be done manually, is there anybody from simple machines that actually does this as a service? or anybody else for that matter?
Nice work ppl ;)
[ACE]$tealth,
You would have to do the conversion manually but it really is *very* easy. You simply upload the conversion script to the SMF directory, and run it from your browser. The only setting you'd need to put in to the script before hitting "go", is to tell it where you have installed phpBB to. Good helpfile is here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/readme_convert.html
Many thanks Grudge, I will try over this weekend. :)
I do have another specific question but I will search these boards for the answer before I ask. ;)
Again, thank you for your help.
Before you convert, you will need to make sure that SMF's MySQL user has access to phpBB's database...
In Cpanel, click on "MySQL databases", then scroll down until you see "Add user to database". Select the MySQL user account that is being used for SMF from the first one and the phpBB database from the second one and click the appropriate button. After that it's pretty straight forward. You will also need to get the MySQL password from SMF's Settings.php since Fantastico generates a random one... From the File Manager, browse to the directory where you installed SMF, and click on "Settings.php". From the menu on the right, click "View File". Look for $db_passwd.
Nice 1 Oldiesmann...thank you! ;)
Quick and simple. No need to do anything! it installed in about 2 seconds!

Just a little! I upgraded another site a few months ago. Next choice was whether to use something like Mambo and the simpleboard module but I couldn't get that to work and didn't know if I could convert to that from YaBB. Maybe I need to keep two seperate systems? Anyway, once I get YaBB upgraded I'll upload the SMF upgrade to that on both sites.

I have a Question ?
I have been helping out a mate to get hosted and set up smf for his students (he be a teacher) he's in Australia me in new zealand which is kinda irrelevant however he jumped the gun a bit and auto installed through fantastico which is fine but fantastico only installed 1.05 and I want to upgrade to 1.1 so he has now got a few members etc and data he doesn't want lost so the questions are as follows:
- can I setup smf1.1 manually in another folder ie www.mysite/forum (yes I know I can do that)
- How do I import the data from the fantastico set up forums Db into the new one? (still new at this!)
I am sure there is a simple way to do this but I am just not confident enough to try without a bit of instruction I dont want to muck up his hard work but I would prefer a manual install so that I know where everything is ie in the /forum dir and not auto installed to who knows where.
Thanks in advance.

For upgrading, follow these instructions:
Upgrade Guide (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6832.0)
You cant import a 1.0.5 database in a 1.1 forum.
So will the version for automated installation auto update when a new smf version releases?
also why does it have the old version 1.0.5 for automated installation?
why not the latest smf 1.1 rc1 ?
The reason they have 1.0.5 for the installation is because 1.0.5 has been around for a while and it's very stable. Although 1.1 is fairly stable its still being developed and reaching it's final stage. Once 1.1 hits final stage I believe that they will add it to the installer.
-JayBachatero
why not provide 1.0.6 in fantastico now that its released?
Providing version 1.06 of SMF is entirely an issue the providers of Fantastico and indeed your host needs to address. Updating your version of Fantastico is entirely down to these two factors and not under any control of Simplemachines.
:)
oh alright! :)
Nice installation, but i don't know if you encountered this problem (which was already fixed by my host), that after I installed it, and clicking on the link, i got error messages, something like "line 232 had a problem.....
This is a PHP 4.4.0 Compatibility (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=41955.0) issue. It was fixed a while back. Version 1.0.6 has the fix on it.
Will 1.1 Final comes into Fantastico?
Well It will be up to them if they want to keep with 1.0.x or go to 1.1
Do you know their homepage? (It is NOT fantastico.com)
First result in google
http://www.netenberg.com/fantastico.php
Thank you guys,
the Fantastico library really saves time... especially when trying out different scripts!
Yea i first tried out SMF through fantastico cuz that time i didnt know much about ftp and stuff.
But later i was told that (at that time) SMF 1.1 RC 1 (the then latest) was better than 1.0.5 so i upgraded :)
It all started with fantastico that i started liking smf so much ;)
phpBB didnt appeal to me at all
That is really a good news for us.. It saves a lot of our time uploading stuff..
It`s still at 1.0.5 [Patched-1] :'( :'(

Even though its a 1.05 version, updating it is much more faster and simple.. U just need to upload a few files and run the update.php
Yes, install 1.0.5, and when you login to admin, it will ask if you would would like to upgrade to 1.0.7. Click "yes", job done. It really is that simple! :D
I'm using 1.1-series so... ;)
It sounds great!!! I will look for a server with Fantastico :D
hey my host (dreamhost) offers IPB on their fantastico but not SMF
dunno why
Thats silly as IPB free is unsupported and not safe for live use whilst SMF is still up and free :D
(They might be addicted to it)

Old versions of Fantastico used to have IPB (back when you didn't have to pay for it). Those versions were before SMF was available on Fantastico.
ops sorry i wrote IPB i meant PHPBB
do u guys think i should ask them to include SMF? maybe they will listen

Fantastico is a product of Cpanel, so it's cpanel who should ad it. But SMF is included in Fantastico for some time now.

Fantastico is actually a third-party addon for cPanel, but we are looking into what needs to be done to get it added to the regular Bulletin Boards section of cPanel. Seeing as to how YaBB 2.1 is now available this way, I may email the YaBB developers for advice :)

Dude, you copied a mod's post from the first page.
This is awesome news ^_^
I have Fantastico on my server. However I am running SMF 1.0.10. When will version 1.1.1 be available for updating in my SMF control panel. I tried web install and it crashed my site. http://www.stunthanger.com/smf
You mean 1.0.0, you could easily upgrade via the FTP method.

1.1.1 is already available in fantastico, you may need to ask your host to update their installation.
Been putting off upgrading due to limited time, but after reading this thread I got all warm and fuzzy. Logged into my Cpanel and clicked one button, and bam I was done with upgrading. Have to say that was the easiest thing I have ever had to do besides maybe my ex-wife....Thanks for pointing this little gem out that was great, took about 3 minutes to do. Worn out know... ;)
ive submitted my request to dreamhost to include SMF in their 1-click installs
So any dreamhost customers here should vote for it since decisions are based on how many votes a suggestion gets - all dreamhost customers get 44 credits by default to vote on issues (u can vote a max of 3 credits per suggestion)
Incase you didnt know have a link in your CP under:
HOME >> SUGGESTIONS
currently my suggestion is pending approval to appear on the list, but keep checking and when it appears be sure to vote via ur Control Panel :P so we can have 1 click installs for SMF as well

Now it''s clear, thank you
Well... don't know about you but I've been installing SMF via Fantastico since February 2006...
A lot of places have auto installs, but they usually arent the latest version, I checked the one at Godaddy, I didnt know it had an auto one, I just downloaded it here, but the version they have is 1.0 :P
Eh, I've had this in my cPanel for the past few months (Around the time I signed up for my first plan that had a direct cPanel). Old :P
hmmm...I just opened an account 3 days ago with fantastico with it and I'm installing by hand? it isn't in there so perhaps I need to tell my host to get over here so I can offer it to MY customers as well.
