Otsikko: How can I use my own server on web network?
Kirjoitti: wathavy - marraskuu 02, 2007, 12:21:03 AP
Hi.
I got multiple questions.
1. The Simple Machine is to be used on the web server, I suppose. Am I right?
2. Then I need to have a server where I can upload this software and execute, is that correct?
3. Do I have to have my own domain server on the internet?
4. If 3's answer is no, is there available server services which accept this SM used on their server?
5. Is it possilbe to have my own PC open to web network? How can I? (This is rather absurd question, and I bet it is not easy to answer)

Or please advise me if there is any documents available in this forum or related pages.

Thank you for your attentions.

#BTW 'Spell Check' button is very nice.

1.) Yes, you will need a webserver.
2.) Same answer
3 & 4.) You do not need to have your own dedicated server -- there are many hosts out there that allow SMF -- see Hosts and Hosting (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=4.0)
5.) Yes but this is not advised.  You would need the knowledge to set up your own webserver and secure it properly.

Once you have a server, you can install smf.  See the install section at the online manual which is linked in my signature :)

You can download Apache Web Server, PHP, and SMF all free of charge.  Pretty much all you've got to do is follow the instructions for installing these things on your home computer.  Then you can essentially use your own computer as a web server or use it as a localhost development machine.

There are free forum providers like smfforfree.com where you can check out SMF or start your own forum free of charge.

You'll also need MySQL, too, also free of charge.
