I'm AMAZED that SMF forums has a feature which lets you download a database backup... BUT NOT RESTORE IT!
Not being able to restore a database from the admin CP makes the whole backup feature almost redundant. Please for the love of god, add the option to upload a previously downloaded database, and save a lot of people headaches when trying to restore.
Such a feature would only be practical for very, very small forums. Once the database reaches a few megs, you really wouldn't be able to reliable upload and import it from apache - it has to be done from the command line at that point.
Generally when you want to restore a backup, it's because your forum isn't working so you can't access the admin pages anyway.

I have little knowledge of such things I have to admit, but other messageboards don't seem to have this issue. I remember when I used to use phpBB there was an option to restore the database from the admin CP.
how would you do it if you can't access the ACP or forum ?
so in that case you could only bring a backup true some other script or phpmyadmin

Very simply The Burglar! Just do a fresh install and then upload the backup copy from the restore option at the forum maintenance. I have tried this method dozen of times with a certain forum software that has this option, and every time it worked like a charm.
Although I agree with what dschwab9 said above, then when the database reaches a certain size, it won''t be possible to restore it via that option, but still if such a feature was to be built as standard in smf, would make a lot of people''s life much easier
i know all about that babylusi i host my own stuff here... i was talking to to the post before me !

There are plenty of situations where you may need to restore the database and still be able to access your ACP.
such as?
even moving past that, theroretically speaking:
The problem with the database size is that php and apache both have limits as to how much postdata you can send and how long you can send it in. With such an option you'd be limited to that setting.
PHP's default limit is 2 MegaBytes in 30 seconds.
Which means if your backup is over 2 MegaBytes, or if it takes more than 30 seconds to upload, it will fail.
That is correct BlackMage, but imagine how persons who start out without any knowledge at all about this technical stuff. And they mess up their forums in the first months and then start all over from the begin loosing all those months work. Now, if that restore feature was there, can you imagine what a help that would be to those people and how happy it would make them. I know, it would have made me very happy in my early days when I just started out
I''m pretty sure that you have noticed as well here how many people crave for such an option. But if the team has something about this option, then it is quite another matter
The concerns are on reliability.. if theres a reliable way to do it then sure (at the devs' discretion) but otherwise i don't support the idea because it would cause more problems and more support requests than its worth.
that's why i am writting a backup/restore (http://dev.teczone.nl/mysql_tool.php) script wich don't use any of the smf settings and can also used for other scripts but its still in a little dev stage .... ;D

It seems neat The Burglar! There is a great demand for such tools. Any link where I can download it and test it out at my test site?
well as i said it's just in the early dev stage so when its ready for some testing you are the first to know ;)
i have lot of work to do coz it's just backup the tables and does not yet do the inserts of the data
