Title: Add Domaintools.com to TrackIP
Post by: Marook on December 20, 2007, 01:30:53 PM
Link to Mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1035)

This mod adds the ability to track an ip on domaintools.com.
This is the only site i know, where you will get the any
possible information on an ip, so its very helpful when trying
to find out which wannabehacker wanted to own your site ;)

You'll get support @ http://www.marook-online.de

I'm very interested in this mod as I can see it being extremely useful. Without wishing to cause offense though I do have some questions. Not knowing much when I started I talked to some more experienced people and was told to be very wary of mod packages as their security may not be as good as the original software.

Does this mod have official SMF backing? Can you guarantee that there are no holes in it?

I don't have the skills to track down obscure security flaws so I'm being extra cautious with what I install. Thanks.

Every mod is being tested by the SMF Mod Team before approval. Furthermore this mod adds just a link, i dont think that it opens any holes in your forum....

Btw, just take a look @ the Modification Approval Guidelines (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=117819)

No problem, i think the SMF Mod Team does their work very well...even when space is missing, your mod wont be approved ;)

*just kidding*

This sounds interesting.  Can someone please explain a little more what the benefits of this modification are?
Thanks!

domaintools.com is a website where you can do different tasks, for example you can do a whois-lookup in order to gather some information about an ip or domain-name. You'll get a huge amount of information about the search query. There shouldn't be any open questions related to an ip ;)
You can try it, just visit domaintools.com and play around ;)

For those interested in using this wonderful package in SMF 2.0b3.1, I've made a minor change to make it compatible. I also took the liberty of updating the link used from "www.whois.sc" to "whois.domaintools.com" since IP lookups automatically redirect from the first domain to the second, and I made the Domaintools link bold.

Please note that I'm not the mod author and this is not an official sanctioned release, and it is not compatible with pre-2.0 versions of SMF.

Hope you don't mind, Marook, and thanks for making the mod available in the first place.

The official vers. 1.0 mod is currently not working due to change of domaintools.com whois internal URL. I've modified the install.php and packed up for you in order to get the mod working.

  Add Domaintools.com to TrackIP 1.1 :
http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/9/14/2097261/domaintools.zip

  Changelog:
- whois service URL modified

Uninstall previous version of the mod, then install the new release.
The package is compatible only with SMF 1.x.x, for SMF 2.0.x use the domaintools_2.0b3.zip package published on the Mod presentation page.

I do.

I don't remember having to do anything special to get it working in RC3.
