Otsikko: Possible way to fight PRIVATE MESSAGE SPAM
Kirjoitti: Ricky. - tammikuu 25, 2008, 03:30:48 IP
Ok,
this seems to be getting out of my hands, my one of the forum has good userbase and almost null traffic from SE so for me , userbase is very important.

But the problem is that people register on forum and privately invite them to join their forums, it once was so disasterous that it took away all my active members.

Also, userbase of my forum is so innocent that mostly people happen to leave it on invitation as they are offered with some Moderator or some better position than normal member on other forum.

I can take action only if I can know if someone is spamming, is there any way so that I can find out who is spamming via PM or there is spamming via PM ?

Last time, I became an active member on my own forum via a fake ID, hence I was always targetted so I use to get to knw that who is spamming but that is something very time consuming.

Kindly suggest me ways to do this. !

Features and Options (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=51.0;sort=subject) > Basic Options:

Post count under which users must enter code when sending personal messages - This option allows you to set a value in which users that have a post count less than or equal to the value must enter a visual verification code every time they send a personal message on your forum. As soon as the member has surpassed this number of posts, they will no longer need to enter a code. Set this to 0 to make it so no one has to enter a code.

Increasing this above 0 should help prevent 'robotic' spam. In some cases actual people do the spamming. You may want to enable postcount based permissions and then disable PM abilities for people in the lower usergroups.

You can also enable e-mail or admin activation if you haven't already.

I have already done POSTCOUNT userbase and people with 30 posts can send PM.

But the problem is that there are people who register, pass 30 posts restriction and then personally invite my members to their own similar board, now untill unless a member tells me that someone is spamming then only I can know else he is inviting on and on.. !!

As I told.. once my whole forum was ruined as a GIRL invited all my active members to her board..  ..

Or may be some filtering without invading user's privacy... may be can search through all PM for URL .. ie. .com .net .org ...

nice idea though :P

The problem is when there are legitimate URLs in the message body. Also, you'd need to check for many possible connection types (ftp, http, and so on), all possible TLDs, or other ways of constructing like octal URLs or plain old IPs.

And what for a PM like -> ask Google for " most hot forum about chicks" & find me ;)

I work on it in few ways, If i have few moderators, or not so many members on board easy php mail() added to mail PM text to one of them when some users post PM should solve problem.

Links to quick moderation, ban and deleting PM should by added in this email.

Permanent control ;) But You are the boss ;)

Next - write about this on public, with names, PMs, etc. Do some publicity for people if  they would like to have them, and do it free and public. This will stop PM going around You, and users will just ask You for help with promoting another websites.

Be a master not a slave in e-world ;)
