Title: Translated most of the Language files to Latvian, how to get it working now ?
Post by: Anglis on January 28, 2008, 03:44:15 PM
We have translated most of files to Latvian language in SMF/Theme/Default/Language ( all the files, apart of Admin stuff )  , now when i replace the new translated languages folder with languages folder i had before, nothing seems to be working, i tried it on default theme as well! I am sure i am doing something wrong, see the screen below! I also checked things which i have translated like Profile, login, stuff everything still was in english only with this mess on a screen missing icons etc!

I am using theme blueskies_11 , havn't translated nothing in there yet, the images will translate later, so i am confused how to get my language files now working, i also tried to paste all the new language files under theme folder i am using, but didnt see any changes so went back to the ones i had ! Any help would be appreciated !

cheers in advance!

Edited:  maybe it it becaaue files are name like this example over here?

First of all: Please keep the english files in the folder and don't remove them!! They're helpful for testing.

You've to copy the language files into another folder, rename them to - for example - admin.latvian.php and start to translate as it's described in the Translation FAQ. If you copy the files in the same folder than the english ones, you can choose the forum language in the admin area (for all users) or in your profile (only for you).

The problem you showed me with the picture occurs, if you delete the english files and keep only the new files with some translated strings. The empty places are missing strings in the language files - if you copy the original english files back, you would see they're displayed again.

Thanks Daniel, will let u know how I am getting on with it :)

Just to get it clear, since i have them translated already i just have to rename all the files and paste in same folder as the standard languages files or, i shall make a new folder like u stated ''admin.latvian.php'' inside the original languagges folder? Besides does every single file has to be renamed to example inside folder '' Login.latvian-utf8''  would that be ok?

cheers

I found those files in index.latvian.php, but i can't see whats wrong with them , this is how they look!

Right Everything seems to be working fine language wise!  I got  1 more question though!

1.Another question after latvian language instalation , my forums went to midle screen forums, no more full screen,  I really need to get back full screen, where to change that ?

This has nothing to do with the language files. Did you change the theme files?

I did not, so thats why i am not sure why it went midle screen? Besides there is a small problem with a character files ( in my language we are using ''š'' , sometimes it s been shown like a ''?'', and that is from the text which has been writen before already, if i write it now it will be ok, but the stuff which has been writen before , ruins some of the words which had a '' š'' or ''ž'' and puts in instead a simbol ''?''

If you translate the language files, you've to use entities for special characters (ä -> ä). If your editor supports UTF-8, you can format the files as an UTF-8 file and use the normal characters without entities.
