Title: Need to hire someone to fix bridge to work with Joomla 1.0.14
Post by: Aravot on February 12, 2008, 05:52:10 PM
Since the current SMF + Joomla bridge v1.1.7 is not compatible with Joomla 1.0.14, I didn't upgrade my site, on February 3, 2008 my site was hacked and everything was deleted, lucky I have a backup but what is the use of using the backup if vulnerability is still there and I can't upgrade to J1.0.14 because the bridge is not supported.

I have read almost all the licensing arguments, I am not here to start another licensing thread but to find a solution to our problem, I read that under GPL work for hire is allowed, I want to hire someone to fix the SMF + Joomla bridge to work with Joomla 1.0.14.

I am posting here because I want to keep the cost done by combining our effort.

Anyone interested in fixing the bridge or making a pledge please reply or PM me.

Not to start yet another licensing debate, but what you are asking for is walking a fine line.

See, the work for hire would not violate the GPL.  But, any redistribution of the SMF-licensed code would violate the SMF license.  So, if you already have the bridge installed, somebody can modify it for you with no violation.  But, it would not be able to be installed for others.

It will be provided only to those who paid for it by hiring someone to fix the code.

It doesn't matter whether people pay for it or not.

Any redistribution of the SMF-licensed code would violate the SMF license.

You would be better off creating a club, and hiring a developer to make a bridge that is not based on bridge 1.1.7.  That way, there would be no violation of either the Joomla interpretation of the GPL or the SMF license.

Orstio, thank you for the club suggestion, that would take a long time, I am looking for a quick fix so I can restore my site and upgrade to J1.0.14 to avoid getting hack.

In that case, the quick fix would mean that you go it alone to get the code updated. It's the only way to be safe if you're just going to base on the old bridge.

A quick fix would be to download the Joomla 1.0.14 files and edit includes/joomla.php so that it does not use the new password salt for Joomla. Then upgrade as usually, only using your "custom" joomla.php. This way all the other security fixes are applied but the bridge still works, I have tried it in 2 of my sites.

It seems the JSMF 2.0.2.1 version can work with Joomla! 1.0.15, please give a try.
