Does this seem right? I got a personal message on my site that read:
The username is "SimpleMachines"
To Administrator,
We wish to inform you that we will be undertaking maitenance of this forum in the next couple of weeks due to a security threat of current forum software. We will be contacting you in due course.
Michael Todd
Simple Machines LLC
Iv been having trouble with some previous members and I wouldnt put anything passed them if they are trying to hack my site or something.
I need to know if this is a real person, this Michael Todd and know if this is a common thing.
This person joined my Forum Febuary 1st and I thought it was wierd that they used "simple machines" as a Username.
Anyway, I dont know much about this site only about my own, but I need help before I take further action and I have no idea what "further action" I should or would take.
I wouldnt be very bothered but as I previously started I know a couple "fishy" people and this person made an account on my site over a month ago.
Oh and this persons email is @simplemachines.org (I wont give out the first part in respect for them)
Maybe Im just being paranoid.. well anyway please help. :] Thanks in advance.
I dont think so it is from SMF group.
try to send emai on that
[email protected] to make sure
That guy just trying to make you scare
You suggest I email the person who sent me the message and ask?
If you don't do e-mail verification than there is no way he could've joined just like that, and SMF doesn't have ANY control over to your forum, he is just some idiot trying to scare you.
there is no-one on the team with that name, no smf team member would join a forum and send that message, or any such message. We only join forums for personal reasons, or help with support and with that we make ourselves known straight away. Unless this guy has admin access he could do no such thing.
I can assure you that he is not from Simple Machines LLC.
In regards to email can you please message me the email address and I will bring this to attention in correct section.
Sounds very strange...
First, I don't think SMF has any way of even knowing all places their software is used,
Second, I believe they would never do anything to your installation without you asking for it first.
Edit: Runic was faster. :)
So I should delete this person from my forum?
So you should ban and delete this user from your forum. Simple Machines will NEVER come to your site and tell you such a thing. We only come to your site upon your request. IMO, this guy is making an attempt to gain control over your forum.
--edit--
Don't forget, you can always check to see who is on the SMF team on our about page too.
If you can look at your smf forum status on admin panel, it send some data to see if there is new versions prior to yours so that might mean they get info sent from your site to SMF but im just paranoid
No, even if you are running an outdated version, we will never send a message like what was sent. It was just some idiota trying to fool you, particularly since there is no person by the name of Michael Todd.
Like IchBin said, we will only go to your site if you request us to for support or other purposes at your request. Like IchBin also said, and I agree with, Ban the user's IP and delete the account.
David_DiSanto - Could you please PM me the IP Address that the "SimpleMachines" user used. That way we can see if we can trace it to a user account here.

Better yet, do a lookup on his IP David. See who his ISP is and turn him in for his activities.
[email protected]Thats the email.
Do what you do by uhh.. err idk. I dont have any respect for this person so I dont care. That may sound harsh but ogh well.
How do I look up the ISP?
I have a friend on our forum with the same IP address. Please tell me how I can turn this person in. Thanks. :]

How do I look up the ISP?
For example you can use http://www.ip-adress.com/ipaddresstolocation/
And it will tell you
IP address location & IP address info:
IP address [?]:
IP address country:
IP address state:
IP address city:
IP address latitude:
IP address longitude:
ISP of this IP [?]:
Organization:
Host of this IP: [?]:
Local Time of this IP country:
That should be enough. :D
How do I report this?
You go to the ISP's site and find their contact information. You either call them, or send them an email to their email. I prefer to call them as something is more likely to get done if you talk to a real person.
Thank you guys so much! :]
