Title: SMF mods and packages
Post by: Night09 on April 17, 2008, 05:31:22 AM
As this board is the main board for developing new mods ect and discussion of mods as well would it not be possible to now split it into 2 Child boards inside.

So we have:

Mods and packages 1.1.x discussion (A place for 1.1.x mods development ect)

Mods and packages 2.x discussion (A place for 2.x mods and developement ect)

This would then allow a clean line between 1x and 2x mods.

It would mean that you dont have to work your way through non relevant posts because the mods are currently going to be mixed as people post them.

The 2 seperate headings would make the coding board cleaner and more efficient by seperating the 2 types of mods going to be posted and you will know you are looking at a correct post or package for the version of smf you have.

Its just an idea I  had to clarify mod versions and stop them becoming a mix of versions making finding info twice as slow due to some being not relevant to each other as such.

i dont think its unreasonable, but as mods are linked to their topic, it would be problematic for the many mods supporting both versions in one package. just another what if to consider.

Problem is most mods contain both versions within single packages.

Splitting them up would be a nightmare. I know this because when 2.x was only available for Charter Members, 2.0 mods were posted in a private forum specifically for charter members.
It was a real pain to have to keep updating 2 different topics, plus the mod page.

Plus if theres a bug with a mod, it would most likely affect BOTH versions.  So the information/support/bug reports is likely relevant across them both.

Old topic... I know, sorry...

But I just had to bring up this idea. What about a "SMF 1 Mods" forum, "SMF 2 Mods" forum, and a "Universal Mods" forum?

Whatever makes the developers happy since they're the ones driving the innovation!

Then again, making things easy to find is also quite important ; )

Personally I couldn't see the point.

i thik the hope would be all the mods would be updated for 2.x
So they you have the issue of havingto keep moving topics around depending on the versions they support.

With the idea I had a mod made compatible with 2. irrispective of compatability with 1. would be listed under 2.

Its normal for the latest version to be backward compatable anyway so it logically would be posted still under its latest.

The main idea for this was really to make it easier for people who may struggle a bit distinguishing between some of the mods and to make it a bit more specific for the purpose.I know a lot of people know what to look for but I also know what its like trawling before finding a small piece if info 72 pages into a mod thats been fixed 30 times running to say.

It would mean a new 2. version would have a clean thread to work with while all 1. solutions would be there still to be read for those keeping 1. versions.

Dont read into this too much though guys,Im sure SMF Team will know whats best for the site overall anyway.

i can see it as adding overhead for mod/theme designers to have things split like that -- its another thread to follow and manage.

I see this situation as temporary as well.  at some point, most mod development for 1.1 will cease, more or less.  It is an interesting thought, nonetheless

I always find the mod site a better place to search than the Mod forum. Although I do try to check there sometimes because the mod site isn't as informative about when new mods have been approved. The mod site, though, is so much more enhanced, and can provide a better source of information than just a title when browsing through. Add on the search options, and I find it to be a sufficient way of splitting 1.1 version mods and 2.0 version mods, better than any forums separation would.
