I'm getting inundated by programmatic access to my SMF. How can I block them. I'm afraid if I do ban IP via SMF admin console I'll get billions of ban log entries.
Getting these from Korea and Japan IPs
[28/Apr/2008:09:11:44 -0700] "GET /index.php?PHPSEStlooml31kqebdljo1imlspi54&action=profile;u=68 HTTP/1.1" 403 298 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET)"
What are the ips?
I've sent them to you via private message
You could block them with a .htaccess file.
It never ends however, IPs are cheap and I'll end up blocking 1/2 the internet. I've added 12 to htaccess and there's just more new ones the next day....
What is the real problem with these.
Are they spamming, creating accounts, just using too much bandwith or what?
Approach to blocking them, depends on what you are trying to solve.
Hi Jmanpa,
LainaaIt never ends however, IPs are cheap and I'll end up blocking 1/2 the internet.
Don't know exactly how to do it as I've never tried, but I know it's possible to block a whole range of IP addresses at once with .htaccess. So if all these troublesome bots are using the same block of IPs you could block them all with one line. Try searching on Google.

you can also block them from your site if you have cpanel - IP deny manager I think it's called - and stop them getting to your forum
Which is just a GUI interface for editing the .htaccess. ;)
yes I know but might be easier for people who don't like editing files :)
I have this section in my .htaccess to block some recent content scrapers
Lainaaorder allow,deny
# Spammers/Scrapers
deny from 89.122.29.125
deny from 89.122.29.128
deny from 89.122.29.77
deny from 89.122.29.127
deny from 89.122.29.105
# Drug Spammers

# bad urls
