Hi,
I was using SMF with a working SMTP until I had to reinstall PHP, MySQL and Apache. Since then it hasn't worked. I don't have sendmail set up on my machine, so that wont work. Does anyone know of anything I need to set to make it work? I have tried both an authenticated and normal SMTP server. I am using PHP 4. something and Apache 2. I have SMF RC 2 installed. I will upgrade as soon as I have the time to modify the new index.template.php file, as I have made some heavy modifications to it... :)
Any help is much appreciated. :)
Are you getting any error messages when you try to send mail with SMTP? Are you running Windows or Linux?
Thanks for the reply.
I don't get any error messages when trying to send email. I am running Mac OS X.3.
Although, with Coppermine, I get the error "Helo command rejected: you are not elijahg at dsl dot pipex dot com"
Thanks again!! ;)
Please upgrade to 1.0.1, it has better error messages in relation to SMTP.

I will.
I have updated to SMF 1.0.1 successfully :) Thanks to all involved in this release :D
I now get the error:
2: fsockopen(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: No address associated with nodename
File: /Library/WebServer/Documents/starmakers/forum/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 556
Thanks for the help!
That means your SMTP server address is wrong. Make sure there are no spaces before or after the domain name, and that it is correct.
You may wish to try the IP address itself.

Ah yes... ::) Thanks [Unknown], I changed it when I was trying to get it to work.
But even with a correct address, I don't get any errors and the email isn't sent. :( After trying to send the email, the forum goes straight back to the Admin page.
I'm not sure what to tell you. That makes it sound like the SMTP server says "okay, I'll send it!" and then as soon as SMF goes away snickers at its friends, "hahaha... that script believed me. What a dolt!"
See, it checks the messages that are returned, and gives an error message if any of them aren't the ones they should be.

Yea I know what you mean... It's just weird that sending of mail via Apple's Mail works fine. Is there some option in PHP to turn SMTP off...?
Well, do you have a username/password set for outgoing in Mail? Sometimes it won't send if you DO specify a password.
You can also use sendmail, which uses PHP's mail settings. Those settings are found in php.ini.

I have tried it with and without a username and password :\
I don't have sendmail installed, and I cant download it from their site. It wont untar or unzip or whoever both the archives throw up errors.
Thanks

Are you trying something like this?
tar xvzf filename.tar.gz
Or...? Are you sure this is Linux? I don't believe PHP can do sendmail on Windows.

Yup I type tar xvzf sendmail.tar, and I get "gzip: stdin: not in gzip format"
Stuffit Expander won't work either...
I am using Mac OS X.
Are you sure it's a gzip? Can you try just tar xvf?
