Title: msn bot - kind of
Post by: Tony Reid on January 22, 2005, 10:01:48 PM
I found this class http://flumpcakes.co.uk/php/msn-messenger and it got me thinking....

Wouldnt it be cool to use a feature like that  for admin functions like having SMF warn you via MSN messenger that a banned user is currently attempting to log in.... or perhaps even use it for regular functions like SMF sending your PM's to messenger instead of email?

Or for alerts like when SMF cannot get to the database etc...

That particular class can even handle two way communication, so using it as a bot would also be possible.

Not that im saying use that particular class above, but the concept seems a good one to me :)

Maybe a SMF Spleak (http://www.spleak.com) Program? Which then Interacts with you, asking what your choice is e.g. ban via I.P - SMF connects to your board and chooses through the various I.P's that member has used to ban the member permanently (however this is a problem if they have a Dynamic I.P).

If this what you were thinking of Tony?

kind of but I was thinking more reactive than actively monitoring things.......for instance when a banned member attempts to log into SMF then its recorded in the banned log - but why not also send a notification to the admin via MSN?

I understand, then shouldn't this apply to all Instant Messenging Systems? ICQ, AIM and Skype for example?

I think it would be easier with jabber, because the other IM Networks don't like connections which are not from their own clients.

on the MSN note...   I'm trying to move an MSN community off of MSN to an SMF/Mambo implementation...
If the system could read the MSN cookie and apply it toward the SMF cookie, that would be totally primo.

Does anything know if this utility (or another) can do something like that?

Forive me, Im not too familiar with Jabber, but my original suggestion was because most board admins run at least one of the big messnger clients.

I'll take a look at Jabber  ... thanks :)
