SMF 2 Beta 3.1
First SMF would not accept what I know to be my password.
Then when I tried the reminder it would not send the email.
Tried the fix in reminder.php shown here:

It sent the email but when the link is clicked and I try to enter a new password is states there is an authentication error.
When I look at the lines changed in the referenced link above it is in reference to "open id" I don't have an open id.
Is that the problem?
I have gone into PhP myAdmin and put in a generic password but when I try it,
I get the following:
"Password security has recently been upgraded. Please enter your password again."
Why won't it accept the changes directly to the data in php myadmin.
Is there any way to clear whatever it has cached?
Help please, I am stumped.
addendum:
I tried to add a secret question in phpmyadmin.
I entered the answer as text and also encrypted with sha1.
Either way it tells me my answer is incorrect.
And now it no longer sends a reminder email.
I've tried the original reminder.php and the revised file and no emails arrive either way.
What am I doing wrong?

one more addendum
I kept trying - was locked out twice.
Finally received another email reminder.
Used it to reset the password again.
It took me back to the page that said
If you've forgotten your login details, don't worry, they can be retrieved. To start this process please enter your username or password below.
I tried to log in once more and finally it let me in.
At this point I have no idea what worked. it was a matter of being stubborn and trying repeatedly.
So sorry to bother you all with this... please delete this post if it won't be of help to anyone else.
