Greetings all. I've just installed and set up SMF on my site (which I host myself) and am having a few minor issues. The most important one was found in the error log:
Lainaahttp://travisserv.servegame.com:81/forum/index.php?action=register2
2: mail(): "sendmail_from" not set in php.ini or custom "From:" header missing
File: E:\htdocs\forum\Sources\Subs-Post.php
Line: 377
Here it is important to note that I'm running under Apache 2.0.49 with PHP 4.3.6 and MySQL 4.0.18 and my webserver is not configred to send email (as I don't have a mailserver installed/running and Yahoo doesn't like free accounts to use SMTP or POP3 or IMAP. Just check/send email through their site via browser). For this reason, I do not want my site, or the forum to have anything to do with sending emails.
Is there a way to prevent the forum from sending any emails? What steps need to be taken to do so?
Also, I am having issues when attempting to use some of the formatting features Glow and Shadow. Though the tags appear properly, they don't seem to do anything.
Hi Travis and welcome!
Those Who Know will stop by soon to answer your email questions - re. the Glow andShadow tags, I believe those are browser or perhaps OS dependent. They have never worked for me on a Mac on any browser, but some of my members tell me they work for them. You could potentially simply remove those options if they bug you (I was on the verge of doing so when a few members protested. ;) )
*frowns at potential browser dependancy* I use Firefox...suppose I'll have to check it with IE (ick!)

The glow and shadow tags don't work in Firefox or Opera, only in Internet Explorer AFAIK.
And they don't work in MacIE either, FWIW. (spoken in the tiny but stubborn voice of a 3% user minority.)

*Shrugs* I find glow and shadow annoying and so the less it works, the happier I am :P
Yikes! Get rid of MacIE if you can run Safari or Firefox! MacIE hasn't been updated in 2 years, and lacks the ability to handle the latest CSS, XML, xhtml, etc. I run a photoshop and graphics tutorial mambo site (www.lyzrd.com/publish) and if you view it with MacIE, the CSS breaks all over the place!
If you're still using OS9, then I can understand why you'd use MacIE.
Take care (from another member of the 3%!)
John

The from header IS sent, though. Unless you're using "sendmail" - can you try using SMTP in your mail settings under Edit Features and Options?

Oh yes, someone on here (Trekkie, maybe?) put me onto Firefox a bit back and I'm a firm convert. :) I'm on a dual G5 OSX10.3.7 with a gorgeous new-ish 23" flat Cinema Display (eBay rocks!).
Since I've been fiddling with SMF templates, I've been switching around a whole lot between Firefox, Safari, Camino (I really like the speediness of Camino, very slick little app), Opera, Netscape, you name it ... I just wish there were a free version of something like Browsercam for us to check out our sites in WinIE - it's SO hard to tell what all those bizarre versions of WinIE will do to the CSS; I hate having to rely on my members to tell me when something isn't centered, etc.
3% ... but with the shouting capacity of at least 15%! ;D

Yeah, I feel the same way - ditto to colored scrollbars. :P
I think Safari still owns them all, but it's a matter of taste really. Hail to all Mac users here ^^
Helenbpd:
What you said about a program that's able to check through all browsers is a great idea. I'll suggest that to the people i know that can program. I guess among WebDesigners and developers it would sell like hotcakes (if i wouldn't prefer open source, that is).
Yeah- take a look at www.browsercam.com It's fabulous but way too pricy for simple noncommercial use (like checking one's SMF templates.) And you can only use their free trial so many times before running out of new IPs to register with. ;)
I *believe* there's a free or shareware version for checking other browsers for folks on Windows, but there's nothing in reverse for Mac. Odd, a little, since I'd be willing to bet that a lot of graphic designers use Mac.
Maybe that's my way to success then ;P
VirtualPC :P?

VirtualPC is so crappy, Unknown. Besides, i'm trying to stay as far away from microcrap as possible.
A native program would be 100% better. And i bet most Mac Users would agree on that. :)
Well, the emailissue has cleared up and I really don't care about the glow/shadow.
Forthe email error, I just went in and shut off everything that mentioned email. I test registered and the error no longer appears. I have requested that my users report any errors they encounter and I do pay attention to the error log. Thanks for the assistance...what there was of it.
My apologies for rudely derailing your thread, Travis. :-\ Sounds like turning off any email-related options (notifications, etc) is the wise strategy. [Unknown] can tell you whether there's a more permanent code-related fix.

Did you ever try SMTP? Or were you already using it?
-[Unknown]
I had the same problem
but now i think it´s working well
just do this :
put it on sendmail ( not SMTP )
and in file Subs-Post.php
put only to chars [ \n ] on line 372
371: $subject = strtr($subject, array("\r" => '', "\n" => ''));
372: $message = strtr($message, array("\r\n" => ''));
373 $headers = strtr($headers, array("\r" => ''));

But that means the html message won't always have line breaks in it!
