Alright.
I updated the forums 2 days ago...
I uploaded about 4 different themes to my server..
went to the theme area to install them...
followed the usual method I'd used before
"From a directory on the server:"
with the path to the new folder..
I click Install...
it asks "Install new theme?"
I click yes..
The page refreshes............
and nothing's happened.
please help? :'(
Did you clear the last box where it says "theme1" (or some other number) right before you clicked Install?
Yep!
Have you tried to ftp them up instead? I have difficulties on one of my hosts to upload through admin section. I think its because of safe mode or something...But ftp'ing them up, then put in the path there in admin section works fine.
That's what I've been doing...
they're all ftp'd into the directory.....
but when I go to install them to the board...nada!
Strange. But we dont give up yet.. ;)
How about spaces in folder names? Do you have any?
And have you tried - since you use ftp - the "browse" for theme archives instead?
Now...that's what I can't seem to figure out.
I can browse for them...but it won't let me select the folder...
what am I supposed to select?
You should select an archive - either xxx.zip or xxx.tar.gz. Then the script will automatically create a folder, pack out the files and insert into database.
oooh! kooky! I was uploading them unzipped already!
Nope. Doesn't work.
try CHMODding everything in /Themes to 777 (including the Themes folder itself)
alright.......browsing worked on a .gz file, but not on a .zip file....
hrm....that's a lot of stuff to have to CHMOD. *cries*
not really :P just have to select them all on SmartFTP. If you'd like me to look into the problem i can, however i'll need FTP info and admin access
(moved over here from Charter section since this thread was active in hopes that more info would help pinpoint situation)
I am having problems too. We have the same host and are not able to give out access to the server as it is not ours. We are not in a shared database. We both just had the update done to bring us to version.
I was able to copy themes until my first install attempt which failed. Since then I have not been able to accomplish any Theme install ability. I have also noticed the following errors:
Lainaa
http://www.ameeshia.com/simple/index.php?action=theme;sa=install
8: Undefined index: error
File: /home/ameeshia/public_html/simple/Sources/Themes.php
Line: 731
alternating with:
http://www.ameeshia.com/simple/index.php?action=theme;sa=install
8: Undefined index: error
File: /home/ameeshia/public_html/simple/Sources/Themes.php
Line: 709
These errors are found in the log and no error is given during install attempt. It looks as though it installs and then you notice the file never took.
I am running on SMF 1.0.1
I do have a separate server for myself and have installed the board to try and implement the activities and I can upload themes from remote and copy but not install them from server. I do not know if it makes a difference, but the new test install was done with a full 1.0.1 version not an update.
Thanks so much.

The OS for the server is Red Hat Linux 7.2. As far as I know, only *.gz files are supported. I do not think it can handle *.zip files. (anyone know where I can get a zip file handler for that version of Linux? And what should it be named to work with smf?) I noticed at http://www.bloczone.net/smf/index.php?topic=25.from1107121092;topicseen#msg208 that there are different Theme archives for version SMF v1.0 RC1/RC2 vs SMF v1.0.1. Perhaps an inappropriate Theme archive was attempted.
Can I assume that whatever Themes are listed as installed are the only ones actually installed and I can delete any orphan subdirectories in the Themes directory?

Installing themes isn't hard, but sometimes it can be tricky depending on how things were set up by the theme's author.
The easiest way
If the theme was downloadable as a .zip or .tar.gz archive file, it's likely it may be easily installable. You can check by opening the archive, and looking for a "theme_info.xml" file. If this exists, you're set to go ;).
Go to your administration panel, and type in the password and all the jazz if you need to. Click on Theme and Layout Settings on the left side. You should see a box titled "Install a New Theme". Choose the "From a file" option, and upload the package (unextracted!) You may wish to clear the two boxes, although it doesn't matter inthe latest version of SMF.
Hit "Install!" and the theme should be installed.
If that didn't work...
If that way didn't work (whether because it's a .rar archive or otherwise), the theme may not be packaged 100% correctly. Not to fear, we can still try to install it.
Extract the zip/archive file into a directory of your choosing, and then look to see what was extracted. If you see a theme_info.xml file, upload all the files you extracted to a directory under "Themes". For example, you should have a "Themes\themename\theme_info.xml" file.
Once you've uploaded all the files, go to admin -> Theme and Layout Settings, and type the name of the theme ("themename" above) in after /Themes/ under "From a directory on the server" and hit Install!
No theme_info.xml?
If you did not find a theme_info.xml file, it's going to be a little more fun... you may wish to ask the author to add this file to their theme. Even so, it can still be installed... it's just a bit more roundabout.
First, go to your administration panel, and type in your admin password if need be. From there, select Theme and Layout Settings, and type the name of your theme (without spaces or special characters, mind you) in under the "Create a copy of Default named" box. Hit "Install!", and you're past step 1.
Next, you'll want to edit the theme. Click its name on the upper right, and fix the "This theme's images URL" value. Because we made a copy, the default was to use the default theme's images URL - but we don't want that in this case. If you had a special name in mind for the theme, you can also use it here (it's just that when you create the theme and its folder, you can't use special characters.)
Now, log in to FTP and find the "Themes\nameoftheme" directory. It should only have a few files in it right now. Take the files from the theme you downloaded, and upload them there. This is the last step - once everything is uploaded, the theme should work properly.
