Title: Message for your guests
Post by: babjusi on September 29, 2008, 08:33:00 PM
Link to Mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1425)

This modification will allow you to show a message to your guests, which will be displayed at the top of the forum. Hopefully this will encourage them to register.

The mod can be configured at the acp of your forum-Features and Options-Basic Features. It adds 2 settings, right under the Allow guests to browse the forum option. One is for enabling and disabling the mod, whereas at the second setting you can enter your own message that you want the guests to see. If you don''t enter a message, then the default message will be displayed instead.

To see its settings and how the mod looks like in action, please have a look at the attached screen-shots at the mod''s download section :)

The mod is compatible with both series of Smf

Very nice Babjusi; this would be good for 2.0 as well. Is there any chance of an upgrade around the corner somewhere. :)

./Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php

It doesn't exist on the theme I'm using as a default. Also, after installing the mod, nothing happened. So I went and installed it manually for the theme I'm using and still nothing happened. I did edit the index file though, for a custom banner/navbar setup, so that could be the cause.

The only file you need to edit is the index.template.php of the dn theme. I just tested out with that theme and you can see the result at the screenshot attached below

If you want, you can attach here the file in question and I will make the edits for you :)

I manually edited it in (a skill I learned working with phpBB3 which I now hate).
But it still doesn't show up. I believe it could have to do with this edit I made:

<div id="side_borders_inner">
<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center">
<tr>
<td width="100%" class="logo_bg">
<table width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td class="logo_bg"><table>
<tr><td><a href="http://forums.mtgdarkness.com"><img src="http://www.mtgdarkness.com/images/darknesslogo.gif" alt="MTGDarkness Banner" width="100%" /></a></td></tr>
<tr>
<td class="menu" width="100%">
<ul class="mtgdmenu">
<li class="mtgdmenu"><p class="mtext"><a href="http://www.mtgdarkness.com" class="menulink">Home</a></p></li>
<li class="mtgdmenu"><p class="mtext"><a href="http://forums.mtgdarkness.com" class="menulink">Forums</a></p></li>
<li class="mtgdmenu"><p class="mtext"><a href="http://www.mtgdarkness.com/articles.php" class="menulink">Articles</a></p></li>
<li class="mtgdmenu"><p class="mtext"><a href="http://www.mtgdarkness.com/friends.php" class="menulink">Friends</a></p></li>
    <li class="mtgdmenu"><p class="mtext"><a href="http://www.mtgdarkness.com/associates.php" class="menulink">Associates</a></p></li>
</ul>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
</td>
<td class="logo_bg">&nbsp;</td>

That replaces the original place where the banner $var would've been. Could this be the cause?

My board is here: http://forums.mtgdarkness.com

//The start of the language strings for the guest message mod $txt['mf_guests']='Guest Greeting Message
Leave blank to show the default message
'; $txt['default_message']='Welcome to our community.

Please consider registering to gain full access!
Registration is free and it only takes a few moments to complete. '; $txt['enable_mfg_mod']='Enable the guest message mod';

Just enter the text at the box area of the mod settings at the Acp of your forum. The text will appear centered by itself. bbcode is not enabled, html yes.

Hello my friend.

Thank you for the mod!!
I have used it but now i cannot cause i changed theme and i cannot get this to work.
At my index.template.php file i cannot find <body>'; i find only <body>.
So i replaced the <body> with this :
<body>';

//Hopefully this message will encourage the guests to register
if ($context['user']['is_guest'] && !empty($modSettings['enable_mfg_mod']))
        echo '
               <div class="windowbg2" style="margin:0 auto;text-align:center">',!empty($modSettings['mf_guests']) ? $modSettings['mf_guests'] : $txt['default_message'],'</div>';

And i am getting this error:

Template Parse Error!
There was a problem loading the /Themes/DSv3/index.template.php template or language file. Please check the syntax and try again - remember, single quotes (') often have to be escaped with a slash (\). To see more specific error information from PHP, try accessing the file directly.

jvo,

I just installed it on 1.1.7 and it's working fine (you can see it here: http://argville.com/forum. You can't miss the big, bad, bright yellow box on top).

Because I'm not using the default theme I had to manually apply the chances to index.template.php in my custom theme. But other than that, piece of cake.

I'm uninstalling all mods and themes in order to start off fresh when I install RC1. However, when trying to uninstall this mod, I get asked for a code modification to 2 files prior to uninstalling:

Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php

Themes/default/languages/Help.english.php

I'm not real clear on exactly what modification I need to make to the code. I'll attach a cap of the modification I'm being asked to do, along with the files I'm being asked to modify.

you could, if you dont have a copy of the package on your PC, download it and use this package parser http://resourcez.biz/PackageParser/index.php to give you the actual uninstall edits

Babjusi left me in charge of his mods, so if anyone has an issue, please see my site where I can give better support.

Thanks! ;)

Smoky, I need help and did not want to have to register for another site that I will probably only use this once.

I have been using this mod for quite some time. I modified it (described in this topic (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=288667.msg1901810#msg1901810)) to suite my needs at the time. However, I have hired someone to help with the Admin duties, but they aren't very technologically savvy, so I don't want them to be an "admin" but would like them to have access to this mod. Is there a way to edit the mod to include membergroup based settings? I can do my own edits, just don't know what to edit.

sorry for the late response, but currently i am not supporting any of my mods.

i am not around and if you want help and you havent found it here, you will need to contact someone on my site that knows my mods.

i have found a life and i am enjoying the hell out of it.. and its for the best, since my grandmother died and i do not code at this moment, perhaps i will be back later..

thank you for understanding.

Smoky

I am running SMF2.0 RC1.2 with a custom theme. I attempted to install your mod using the package manager. It said it installed with no problem. However, the acp is not modified. In looking at this thread, I noticed that there was a lot of people that had the same problem with different themes. So, I modified the index.template.php as it says in your manual instructions. It still does not appear. The theme I am using is Xtheme2. It is a copy of default, with my modifications.

I don't actually run on SMF2 RC2. I'm on 1.1.10 and won't upgrade to RC2 until I've confirmed support of all the mods I depend on.

then i suggest to wait until the mod author, BABJUSI has the time to check things out and pronounces it as fit for the rc 2 as since you are still using the 1.1 series, you are talking a big leap from what you are accustomed to.. (big hint, go ahead and install a test forum and start getting used to the new layout)

i wish you good luck and if you need anything further, please post.

thanks!   ;)

Great mod!  i need it to work with dibermc.  I see lots of talk about modifications to get this to work on custom themes but are there detailed directions anywhere?

Thanks again for the great mod.

Dillion - For adding mods to custom themes, the Source edits will be exactly as stated when you parse the package, just follow the Template edits as closely as you can, if you don't find an edit, find what it was editing, and then alter the code it adds to fit what you found.
