I`m afraid I have become totally lost in the permissions/member groups settings.
I`ve been using IPB for over a year and that was simple, but this seems far from easy!
All I want is, new members who join up to have the usual forum rights that most boards give. Why are there so many groups, from Admin through to Hero Member. I`ve got ten groups listed in admin. Do they all need to be set manually (permissions).
Then further down the page, there is yet another list of permissions for the individual forums.
There`s predefined permission profiles, drop down menus with more options.
Maybe this is simple enough for someone who has used Yabb or whatever, but for someone who has only ever used IPB :o
How the heck do I set this up. I am the sole admin/moderator, and probably will be for some time. I want members to join the forum, and have regular forum rights (posting, attachments, polls etc etc) but there`s so many settings and options I am lost!
You do not need to modify any permission .. the default ones will work for you fine.
Try clicking on (Modify) beside each group to see what permission is granted to them and what is not .. of course you can modify them as you want.
I think what is confusing me is the top section. You have the main groups, admin, moderators etc.
But then, further down there are the newbie, junior and so forth. When checking these, I noticed that nearly all the permissions are set to disallow.
Do I need to set these groups too?
Man, I`ve spent too long on IPB :o

I'm having the same problems maritimesbob, I'll be watching this thread. In IPB the default permission settings were pretty close to what most people would want but with SMF everything's dissallowed for everyone except the admins and moderators. I'm still going nuts trying to figure it all out with all the forums and all the user groups having to be modified. ::)
Lol, well I`m still no nearer to understanding what is going on!!
I don`t know whether I am supposed to change the groups `Newbie through to Hero Member`, so they have permissions or not.
Right now, admin has the correct permissions, as does moderators, then there is the ungrouped members, that have permissions, but the ones I menioned above have zero.
Just below all that, there is a section with drop down menus with various options. What the heck are they for?
I can't figure out how to use those drop down menus either but I'm beginning to think that if you set all the boards to Global instead of local and set them up with standard permissions, everyone except the admins and moderators will have normal permissions like on IPB. Do not take my word for this, wait for an official explanation. :D
