Otsikko: Unable to Backup Database

When I go into Forum Maintenance - Backup Database and click on Download, I get this error message

An Error Has Occurred!
Only administrators can make database backups!

However, prior to this screen, I'm logged in as Adminsitrator and can do all other functions in the Admin section.

The error is consistent and I can use the browser Back button, go back to the previous Admin screen and continue carrying out Admin functions without loggin in again.

I've attempted backups with two types of cookie settings.

Enable local storage of cookies - OFF
Use subdomain independent cookies - ON

and

Enable local storage of cookies - ON
Use subdomain independent cookies - OFF

... deleting cookies and re-logging in between tests.

Have also tried these settings

User online time threshold - 99999
Seconds before an unused session timeout - 99999
Default login cookies length (in minutes) - 600

Checked my Profile and I'm definitely Admisnistrator.

It's a new install of SMF 1.01 and data was converted using phpBB2 to SMF converter.

Any help appreciated, Dave

More information...

Just did a fresh install of SMF to a new subdirectory and a new database. Didn't change any settings at all anywhere or enter any posts.
Went into Admin/Forum Maintenance - Backup Database, attempted to download and received the same error message.  ???

More information....

Also consistently get bounced out to this Login screen when I attempt to choose Yes in Find and Repair any errors - yet the other maintenance options seem to work OK.

I was getting this many times earlier in the day in other areas of Admin - that's why I was fiddling with cookie and timeout settings (see 1st post).

Logging in again via this window never works for me. Have to Back up with the browser, log out, then log in again at the top of the page.  :(

24 hours later...

Haven't opened either of the forums in the past 24 hours. I had "hibernated" the PC a few times and shut down and restarted Zone Alarm a few times.

And now both forums backup OK!!!

I'm glad it's working, but wonder what caused it?? Zone Alarm perhaps? It has caused problems in the Mambo v4.5.1a Admin area - continually being stuck in a login loop. Which is a tad similar to what was happening with SMF - except SMF was less frequent and more random. Mmmm.  :-\

Sorry for not getting back to you.

Yes, Zone Alarm and other softwares can cause problems here.  I'm not sure why this would be happening though - I haven't heard anyone else report it.

Again, sorry for not responding, but you seemed to have it more or less resolved and I've been having trouble keeping up :/.  How is it now?

Thank you for your reply Unknown.

I have several test installations of SMF – some with data and some straight "out-of-the-box" installs – no data, no tweaks.

Today, I tried backing up a few of these test installations. Most of them worked OK without shutting down Zone Alarm. One started into the "You are not allowed to administrate this forum" loop then gave me a message something like "Your Session has expired - try logging out and in again". On a second attempt, this worked OK too. So you're right... it's more or less resolved for the moment. I can backup.

In the process of looking for answers, I tried your "create_backup.php" and "restore_backup.php" utilities. It's a little ripper!! Perhaps you might consider giving it a more prominent home in the forum – it's such a handy tool to have.

I'm glad to hear other people aren't reporting problems with Zone Alarm – suggests it's something peculiar to my set-up.

Thanks again for looking up this thread. It's very heartening for a new SMF user like me to know the Lead Developer cares..
