Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: Deprecated on November 06, 2008, 01:08:35 PM
Thank you! :)

I just want to point out, I expected and intended that most people will want to pick their own generic avatars rather than use those provided with this mod, but I thought it would be good to provide a starter set so that everybody could try the mod out right away.

Use your own images or use the default set provided with the mod package. If you choose to use your own images you can host them on your shared hosting, or you can even use remote URLs somewhere else on the Internet.

Your only problem was that there were two copies of function ModifyGenericAvatarsSettings() in your file. I don't see how that got doubled and not the other changes too, unless you manually edited? In any case I deleted the second copy and I've attached it to this reply.

Post by: Kermit on November 06, 2008, 02:42:48 PM
Actually the error message explains everything,the function modifygenericavatarssettings() was declared twice (also added the same function 2 times),that's why you get the error from above

I guess I should let these topics solve themselves. Evidently we were both investigating and posting a reply at the same time. :)

I receive a error in ModSettings.php when I try to install this...
I tried to install it anyways, and it supposedly installs successfully, except when I try to click on generic avatars in features and options, it just goes to the basic features tab.

Post by: Deprecated on November 06, 2008, 10:50:37 PM
Well first of all guitarplayer, in the future please do not ignore warnings and install anyway. I hope you were just installing on a test forum, but I suspect otherwise.

Please post your ModSettings.php and I'll see what I can do for you. Please also state which SMF version you are running and list any other mod packages you have installed.

In the future when installing or removing mod packages, if you get a warning message you should either (1) be prepared to deal with your problems without outside assistance, or (2) ask for help in the modification's support topic before you install or remove in spite of warning messages.

Again, please attach your ModSettings.php file to your reply.

I could have easily made this show the generic avatars everywhere, profile page, PM pages, etc., but I wanted to change ONLY ONE THING, only wanted to change the topic view in the "post bit" area.

I feel that no avatars in the other areas are not any impact, and in fact could be considered negative by some SMF users.

Okay Finny, I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I was evacuated a few days on account of the L.A. fires and it's taking me a bit longer to catch up with my support topics.

The good news is that I fixed your problem. Even better, I fixed a lot of problems that won't happen to others in the future too. I invented a new way to add a few of my changes that won't get interfered with by other mod packages. (This affects SMF 1.x only.)

Please download the new version and let me know if it fixes things for you. I'm so sure it will work that I'd bet you beers to six-packs! :D

You will have to edit your theme to get this mod (and most other mods) to work correctly. I haven't done themes yet so I have no idea where to start.

One possible exception is if you're using a language other than English or English-UTF8. Please let me know if this is the case. I've been adding British and British-UTF8 to all my mods, but haven't reached Generic Avatars yet.

And Alen, you're welcome. I'm sorry I couldn't help you. My understanding of the reflection thing is that it would require extensive changes to make my mod work with it, or vice versa.

I am using English-Utf8 so it shouldn't be that I would think,  but what exactly am I supposed to change in my theme - maybe just the modifications (english and e-utf8) file in the theme directory?

I suggest that you should post a support request in one of the theme boards. I'm planning to learn themes in the near future but I have not started yet.

K - no worries, it works great other than the menu in the Admin-->Features and Ops section!  Cool mod - much appreciated.  I might suggest the ability to modify the size of the avatars or just making them the size of the normal ones (they're several times larger than the provided ones on default.... that would be awesome!
Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: Deprecated on November 22, 2008, 06:44:21 PM
The avatars supplied with the package are just suggestions, provided so that people who want to use it can have something that works right away. Although I like them myself. :)

It would be difficult to provide avatars for every size preference, although I'll give some thought to adding some alternate sizes.

1.) What size(s) would you suggest?

2.) You could of course just resize them yourself. If you don't have an image editing program I suggest GIMP, the GNU Image Editing Program (http://www.gimp.org/) (open source and free, just like SMF). Admittedly it isn't the easiest program to use, but the price is right! :)
Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: lobo777 on November 22, 2008, 09:19:54 PM
I think the normal size that most uploaded ones are something like 65x48 - just provides perhaps a little less clutter.

I did just resize them to 65x65 and they look awesome!  Perfect size (for my forum needs) and very classy looking  - thanks again!
Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: Deprecated on November 23, 2008, 01:05:40 PM
That's great! My policy is that whatever makes "my public" happy is fine! :)

I think I may add a two-thirds size version to the site. The current ones are 100x100 so the two-thirds would be 67x67... would that be a good size?

One real problem is that as far as I've seen almost every forum decides to use a non-default size, even mine!
Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: lobo777 on November 23, 2008, 06:43:59 PM
That's odd - mine all are about 65x65 or so (depends if they're uploaded), but it looks great either way.  If the file itself is 67x67 or so, the theme won't make it larger if it's set to larger...  You could always just throw the instructions for your "public" to resize to appropriate size for their forum and perhaps make a suggestion on the program to use (I just use my HP Photoshop and do a custom resize).  But either way, this mod is useful since a lot of people don't bother to go to their profiles and pick an avatar for some reason!
Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: Deprecated on November 23, 2008, 07:00:14 PM
Thanks for the comments Lobo.

I'm an engineer and we engineers think mathematically. To me, smaller would be like a half, a third, two-thirds, etc. The 67x67 size is simply 2/3 rounded off.

However, I just looked at the SMF default avatars, and they're 65x65 so that's what I'll use. In fact if I haven't got it up on the site in a few days, somebody please remind me.

So little time, so many mod packages.... :D

Umm... for the n00b, I've tried finding desperately installation instructions.

Can someone tell me where these files are supposed to go? Are they in separate folders, all in the board, or what?

BTW, I uploaded "add_default_settings.php" in the root of the board, ran it, said it installed successfully... but I don't see anything in the admin. I installed everything inside the generic avatars folder on the root folder...

Thanks.

Installed this mod on SMF 2.0 RC2. It reported a problem with the mod to the Display.template.php file - replace. I went ahead with the mod and then modified the Display.template manually and all is well. It may well have been due to other mods I have installed but it does work OK on SMF 2.0 RC2.

Thanks Deprecated for yet another great mod. :)

Hi,

thanks for this mod.

here's the french translation :
$txt['generic_avatars'] = 'Avatars génériques';
$txt['generic_avatars_cat'] = 'Avatars génériques';
$txt['generic_avatars_banned_enable'] = 'Activer l\'avatar générique pour les membres bannis :';
$txt['generic_avatars_banned_image_url'] = 'URL de l\'image pour l\'avatar des membres bannis :';
$txt['generic_avatars_female_image_url'] = 'URL de l\'image pour l\'avatar féminin :';
$txt['generic_avatars_gender_enable'] = 'Activer la sélection par genre :';
$txt['generic_avatars_guest_enable'] = 'Activer l\'avatar générique pour les invités :';
$txt['generic_avatars_guest_image_url'] = 'URL de l\'image pour l\'avatar des invités:';
$txt['generic_avatars_male_image_url'] = 'URL de l\'image pour l\'avatar masculin:';
$txt['generic_avatars_member_enable'] = 'Activer l\'avatar générique pour les membres :';
$txt['generic_avatars_neutral_image_url'] = 'URL de l\'image pour l\'avatar neutre:';
$txt['generic_avatars_settings_title'] = 'Avatars génériques';

Also, I noticed a little mistake in language declaration of "modification1.xml":
Quote...<file name="$languagedir/Modifications.english_british.php" error="skip">
...
<file name="$languagedir/Modifications_british.english-utf8.php" error="skip">
=> it seems that "_british" suffix isn't at the right place for utf8 part, doesn't it ?

a part from this code in display.template.php being different in 2.0.1

// Otherwise, show the guest's email.
elseif (in_array($message['member']['show_email'], array('yes', 'yes_permission_override', 'no_through_forum')))
echo '
<li><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=', $message['id'], '" rel="nofollow">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/email_sm.gif" alt="' . $txt['email'] . '" title="' . $txt['email'] . '" border="0" />' : $txt['email']), '</a></li>';

it still works,

for 2.0.1 do this

find
// Otherwise, show the guest's email.
elseif (!empty($message['member']['email']) && in_array($message['member']['show_email'], array('yes', 'yes_permission_override', 'no_through_forum')))
echo '
<li class="email"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=', $message['id'], '" rel="nofollow">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/email_sm.gif" alt="' . $txt['email'] . '" title="' . $txt['email'] . '" />' : $txt['email']), '</a></li>';

// Done with the information about the poster... on to the post itself.

replace with
// Otherwise it's a guest.
else
{
// Show generic guest avatar?
if (!empty($modSettings['generic_avatars_guest_enable']) && !empty($modSettings['generic_avatars_guest_image_url']) && !empty($settings['show_user_images']) && empty($options['show_no_avatars']))
echo '
<li class="margintop" style="overflow: hidden;"><img src="' . $modSettings['generic_avatars_guest_image_url'] . '"  alt="" class="avatar" border="0" /></li>';

// Show the guest's email?
if (in_array($message['member']['show_email'], array('yes', 'yes_permission_override', 'no_through_forum')))
echo '
<li><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=', $message['id'], '" rel="nofollow">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/email_sm.gif" alt="' . $txt['email'] . '" title="' . $txt['email'] . '" border="0" />' : $txt['email']), '</a></li>';
}

// Done with the information about the poster... on to the post itself.

the code being replaced is some what different and I don't know the effects it will have if any, but it is working for me so far with no errors

This mod is scheduled for update to 2.0.6 compatibility in the near future. I'll have a look at that.
Title: Re: Generic Avatars
Post by: Deprecated on January 24, 2014, 05:17:17 PM
This modification has now been updated for SMF 2.0.6-2.0.7 compatibility. It is now uninstall only for SMF 2.x versions prior to 2.0.6.

The mod is not version locked for SMF 1.x (never was). Do not proceed with any SMF 1.x version installation if you encounter error messages.

For those who are unfamiliar with this modification, it adds generic images for members (and guests if you allow guest posting) who have not uploaded their own avatars. Here is the set of available generic avatars (or you can substitute your own). Images are provided in both 100px and 60px:

I've included suggested "banned" generic avatars here in the topic although they are not in the mod package. The following images are 100px and 65px to match the other generic images although they appear to be the same size due to the image hosting service thumbnail process. Just click and download either or both images if you want to use them.

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthumbnails111.imagebam.com%2F30372%2Fe3d978303712541.jpg&hash=3df3b58c433ec6b16dec9b220a3707843565b643) (http://www.imagebam.com/image/e3d978303712541) (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fthumbnails109.imagebam.com%2F30372%2F4e9b17303713738.jpg&hash=31443752c3e9f93b2cd233f27548fa831c6493b7) (http://www.imagebam.com/image/4e9b17303713738)

I figure many users of this package would want to provide their own banned avatars. A jackass comes to mind... :D

Okay, good. I found flaws in your file and my post fixed them. Keep that file the way I sent it and don't install any mods until we get you out of your problem.

Next file to see if we can find problems is Display.template.php. Post your copy as above and I will scour the file and edit it, removing any trace of my Avatars mod.

Reply to this post and attach your Display.template.php

I check SMF almost every day to see if there are any replies to my modification package support topics. I want a happy Depricated cheer team! :)

You're going to have to quit installing and uninstalling mods while we are working on this. I'm sure you can understand that I already fixed ManageSettings.php and now you're asking me to fix it again. Why don't you just uninstall the new mod, replace the file, then reinstall the new mod? I told you, I removed every trace of my mod from the file that you posted.

Do not install any more mod packages until this is fixed! Even better, uninstall that other mod. Okay?

In the mean time tell me what SMF version you are using and what mod packages you have installed: complete list.

Also, there is one sure way you can fix it on your end if you want. Just uninstall ALL of your mod packages, then replace all your SMF files with fresh files from the SMF version you are using. Then reinstall the mod packages after that.

Also, if the problem is not solved today please post a screen shot so I can see exactly what your problem looks like.

Okay here's your fixed ModificationSettings.php

Your Display.template.php file didn't have any code from the Generic Avatars mod.

Attach your Admin.php to your reply. Or if you wish, you can edit your Admin.php file yourself.

1. Find the line that has// Mod Authors for a "ADD AFTER" on this line. Ensure you end your change with a comma. For example:

2. In the next line or next few lines find my code and remove it'generic_avatars' => array($txt['generic_avatars_cat']),

In the mean time do not install or uninstall any mod packages. I can't keep chasing a moving target.

Looking to try out this mod but I think another mod has changed this line in my Display template...

// Otherwise, show the guest's email.
elseif (in_array($message['member']['show_email'], array('yes', 'yes_permission_override', 'no_through_forum')))
echo '
<li><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=', $message['id'], '" rel="nofollow">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/email_sm.gif" alt="' . $txt['email'] . '" title="' . $txt['email'] . '" border="0" />' : $txt['email']), '</a></li>';

I have:

// Otherwise, show the guest's email.
elseif (!empty($message['member']['email']) && in_array($message['member']['show_email'], array('yes', 'yes_permission_override', 'no_through_forum')))
echo '
<li class="email"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=', $message['id'], '" rel="nofollow">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/email_sm.gif" alt="' . $txt['email'] . '" title="' . $txt['email'] . '" />' : $txt['email']), '</a></li>';

(to be replaced by...*)

// Otherwise it's a guest.
else
{
// Show generic guest avatar?
if (!empty($modSettings['generic_avatars_guest_enable']) && !empty($modSettings['generic_avatars_guest_image_url']) && !empty($settings['show_user_images']) && empty($options['show_no_avatars']))
echo '
<li class="margintop" style="overflow: hidden;"><img src="' . $modSettings['generic_avatars_guest_image_url'] . '"  alt="" class="avatar" border="0" /></li>';

// Show the guest's email?
if (in_array($message['member']['show_email'], array('yes', 'yes_permission_override', 'no_through_forum')))
echo '
<li><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=emailuser;sa=email;msg=', $message['id'], '" rel="nofollow">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/email_sm.gif" alt="' . $txt['email'] . '" title="' . $txt['email'] . '" border="0" />' : $txt['email']), '</a></li>';
}

Much appreciated if you can help merging the versions together!

Sorry, no can do. My suggestion is to uninstall both mods, install Generic Avatars, then verify all is working. Download backup copies of the affected files (see the mod package info).

Then install your other mod and see what changes it makes, see if you can figure it out.

Generic Avatars works perfectly with 2.0.9 and default theme. I'm about to go to the new SMF release shortly, will report back if I encounter any difficulties.

Without any more information all I can tell you is that this modification changes the theme template, and you will have to manually edit your template to make Generic Avatars work. IIRC that's Display.template.php but don't hold me to it.
