Title: A Simple Login?
Post by: tigerturtle on November 07, 2008, 11:02:57 PM
I am using SMf 1.1.4 on a client's site, and they want a simple but safe way to have every member login without having each of them register individually, for example, everyone has the same username and password, is this possible?

Firstly, if he wants "Safe", he wants to upgrade to v1.1.7.

Why don't you just enable guest posting? Then nobody needs any password or username. One thing though, you can't make guest posting work on 1.1.x, gotta upgrade to 2.0, because 2.0 has better security features to keep spam bots from posting. Otherwise the spammers will find you and fill your forum with spam.

If you upgrade to SMF 2.0 you could easily add a password to guest posting. It's just a configuration setting, just enable the setting, type in the question "What is the password?" and type in the secret password. Then whenever somebody wants to make a guest post they will see "What is the password?" and they have to enter the magic word. As guests they would be able to pick whatever usernames they want, so you could tell them apart, instead of having everybody use one account and have one name.

No, only necessary when you post.

It's part of the CAPTCHA and anti-spamming protection improvements in SMF 2.0.

For example, I have a site with guest posting and I have two questions:

Please post in this topic again in about 12 hours if you don't find any solution. I'm convinced that there is a solution to your problem, but I'm breaking shortly for dinner, and later for snooze time. :)

I'll help you more again tomorrow and I'm sure we can find a solution for you. It's possible I might even either give you some manual code changes, or maybe I'll write a mod package.

I'm not convinced this problem can't be easily solved. Seeya tomorrow. :)

Ok I'll upgrade, can you give me a link with detailed instructions on updating, I've been afraid to update thus far.

Also, does anyone have an answer to my question regarding a simple log in (one username, one password for everyone).
Got the document right here for you,  :)

Looks like a portion of the posts have been deleted, but you can certainly allow guest posting in 1.1.x without any issues.  The only restriction that is possible (that I can think of) in 2.x that isn't in 1.1.x is voting in polls.
