Title: Locked out
Post by: WFair on November 13, 2008, 03:31:01 PM
Our forum on where I am Admin locks me out nearly everyday.
My my IP gets locked from too many log on attempts (not mine).
Now the number I have been calling to get it unlocked is not in service  :(
Right now I am locked out and the porn spam is running wild

I think you're buggered.

Your host is the only one who can help you, I'd imagine.

Sorry and all that.

Can you give us a url for your site?

Be aware of this, though:

That's weird. I notice from your Packages, that you've upgraded to v2.0. Or, tried to...

Can change "Guests can view forum for me' ok it

I unchecked before I was locked out to slow down the spam but now I see it's probably bots that don't help
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:06:01 PM
I notice that you have a lot of people on your "Banned" list.

As everything else looks OK, apart from the v2.0 thing, I'm wondering if one of the banned IP addresses is a bit too close to yours and it's banning you, in effect, too?
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:07:12 PM
OK. Guest view enabled.
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: WFair on November 13, 2008, 04:08:47 PM
Those banned are from the bot attack, I didn't see any IP's even close to mine.
check the log files and you will see where I got dropped

Will do.

The spammers are gonna love your site, coz you have it set to "Immediate". "By approval" and the follow-up "By activation" will stop a lot of those.

That'll stop all the bots, too.

I could fix this if I just had a working phone # to tech

I have 1 847 346 1801  not in service

Would you change that also
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:12:02 PM
Will do.

Can you get in now?

If you set the approval to "By approval", you could get rid of all those bans. Those bans are filling up your error logs, too.
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:13:57 PM
Right. It's set to "By approval", now. Just remember, when you approve, to make sure they have to activate.

If you get .ru email addresses, just delete them, coz they're all spammers.

Thanks for all good help...maybe I can get tech on the phone before too long

I'm still blocked at the server
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:18:47 PM
As you're now "By approval", do you want me to lift all the bans, to see if that helps?
Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: WFair on November 13, 2008, 04:26:11 PM
Don't think it will help swince it's on the server for too many log in attempts.

I just e mailed SMF see it that works

Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:31:10 PM
You use the SMF host, do you?

I believe they had a few hassles, recently.

Shall I delete them, to see if it works?

Tried Anonymouse?

I think that this has nothing to do with your forum, but your host, I'm afraid.

Everything looks fine, to me.

Actually, thinking on this a bit more, it COULD be your gear, at home.

Have you installed a new router, or anything?

Can you surf everywhere else, OK?

Some routers have built-in keyword blocking, which can cause those errors.

Might even be worth rebooting your router.

I can surf anywhere but my forum
I am in as a guest from Anonymouse will see what I can do now

That kinda proves that it's not SMF...

It MIGHT be the route that your computer takes to the site.

If you do a tracert to your site, does it complete?

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Using-Tracert.html

Basically, open a DOS window and enter "tracert rangeday.com"

Title: Re: Locked out
Post by: kat on November 13, 2008, 04:53:57 PM
Now that is really odd.

I think it's down to your host, I'm afraid.

Unless anyone else can think of anything, of course.

I'm wondering if upgrading to SMF 1.1.7 wouldn't help, here.

Except you can't...

QuoteAn appropriate representation of the requested resource /RDforum/index.php could not be found on this server.

It may be down to whatever that upgrade to SMF v2.0 was all about.

I am having a similar problem.  My admin name is being hacked and it has locked me out.  I have at least 40+ IP addresses trying to logon. My admin is another person that is not available right now.  I am the owner, just had someone else open the site.  I do have access to CPanel.  I have locked out the IP addresses but they keep coming in with new ones, always trys twice.

got it resolved, had to get in between the hacker locking my name out.  Once in I set the "home page" to only registered members, they can not see any users this way or start guessing the pws, etc.  I counted 41 IPs being used to try and hack the board.  They were spread all over the globe.  Since I only allow local users on, any out of country were locked out with Cpanel.

Has anyone else been having this type problem.
