ok i've just downloaded SMF 1.0.1 and uploaded a copy of Search.php and this appears to have fixed it.

Any ideas what could have caused the above error?

I'm not sure. Do you have temporary tables enabled?

despite uploading a new copy of Search.php the problem has returned!

Disable temporary tables: ticked

what's going on?
