Great!
But 3 questions / ideas:
#1 It seems to me that it does not work for admin, right? I tested logged as admin and it did not work. So I tested with another login and it worked.
#2 It would be great if it has the option to ignore/delete the second, third ... posts besides only merge (or it could be another mod);
#3 Also it would be great if it could merge post based in title & author. So if one post with title "Hi, how are you?" posted twice or more by author "A" the option to merge and/or delete the duplicities!

Hi.
That "bug" is not "bug". And if it were, then it would not be of this MOD.
Imagine:
1 .- You do not have installed this MOD.
2 .- A member changes the latest message in a topic, and add any text. (which is how it should happen, and not Flood).
3 .- Will continue topic mark as topic read. Not display sign of new post or icon, nothing (whether it is used or not used this MOD).
So always happens in SMF. Then, no is bug of this MOD. Nor would it be a feature of this MOD; modify the last post, is something that always happens.

QuoteI admit that he had not noticed that "Double Post Merge" also Merge automatically, only manually with buttom. It's a cool button. Ah, no--it's not a cool button. My custom cool button is cool. Cool. I took the Split button and I inverted the arrows and colored it to yellow ;) That's cool. No, it's not that cool.
QuoteTaking into account the above:Yes. I was thinking, if Din is still not willing to take over, since he pretty much "gave me" the MDP mod, maybe we could work on it together? (Not RIGHT NOW, though... I'm busy working on Aevac!! ;))
1.- My MOD, Merge DoublePost automatically; and the other MOD, Merge DoublePost with a button in the Display.template. And the user chose what would most like.
2.- Moreover (and very important), that MOD was apparently "Not Avaible any more / not active development". And my MOD (a MOD with 'different function' and method) was going to take development.
QuoteAfter your clarification:Which is why I PMed you :) I figured it would be too bad to waste your time on a mod, and we should team up on improving it or something!
1.- I can only say that my MOD is much lighter, and much more compatible with the code already has the Forum.
(does not seem sufficient) :-[

I don't know why you weren't interested in merging both our mods, which seems only logical, considering the point of the mods themselves.

On my forum, when the user manually edits their post it will tell other users that the topic has a new post. Your mod does not do this and therefore I consider it a major flaw. This issue has to be considered a bug in your mod because it is a normal part of SMF software that fails to work when your mod is installed. Unfortunately, I must disable your mod until this is fixed.
Quote from: mark7144 on December 17, 2008, 06:13:41 AM
It would be nice if you could have a feature that allows the admin to choose for the last post to be used for merging rather than the first, this would mean a new reply will always show. Some of us don't care that the topic is bumped because for many of us, people who double post are not doing it for that purpose.
Quote from: M-DVD on December 17, 2008, 10:49:58 PMYes because my users do not double post to bump threads, they double post to add new information or just by being a newbie.

Quote from: M-DVD on December 16, 2008, 09:40:13 AMYes, as I said, I will gladly let you use my code in your mod. :) And since Din gave me ownership of Merge Double Posts, you can basically use all of the code in it.
Ok, and Thanks.

And if it is done, would give them their due credit.

QuoteI didn't realise that you have a Double Post mod as well, what is the difference between this one and yours?Err...
Quote from: Nao 尚 on December 18, 2008, 06:05:58 AMit uses the last post's ID instead of the first post's, it adds a nice little [mergedate] tag that says (translated to the current viewer's language) "originally posted on..." or whatever you want (you can style it, as default it has a small font with dimmed color, and an horizontal dashed bar... I like how I made it look like.), and you can also choose the default minimum time below which double posts are automatically (in seconds), etc, etc...The bolded text are the three things are would like implemented into this mod.
Quote from: mark7144 on December 18, 2008, 06:51:09 AMNo...

Bug
Problem: When 3 posts are merged, the first merge date message shows [ time ] bbc code in the message.
Reproduce: First double post > Notice the merge date message is formatted correctly > post another time > notice that same merge date message now shows the [ time ] bbc code.
Quote from: mark7144 on December 20, 2008, 09:43:18 AMLet's be more specific: I suppose you mean that you want the merged post to inherit, just like Merge Double Posts does, the newer post's properties, rather than the older's. That way, obviously it won't bump the topic at all if a user has already read the newer post. It just needs to appear as Unread if users have already read the older post, but not the newer one.
M-DVD: I think it's absolutely essential for THIS mod that you allow us have it so that when a post is merge, it shows as a new reply from the board index.
Quote from: mark7144 on December 20, 2008, 10:49:30 AMRight, so we're both talking about the same thing. :)
Sorry if I'm not being clear, what I want is when you merge two posts, the latest post stays which therefore bumps the topic. Currently when you merge two posts, the latest post is moved into the first meaning a new reply is not signalled.
QuoteThis mod advertises the fact that people can't bump topics but is that really an issue for most of us admins? Surely that sort of behaviour is limited to support type forums and therefore most of us downloading this mod actually want the topic to be bumped.I *suppose* that such a mod could offer the ability to choose whether to integrate within the first, or last post. It would be an admin choice, and would default to "latest".

As in, so that the user replying to his post will cause the topic to be bumped, but for it to be added into their previous post rather than having a whole new row for them, like the old, no longer compatible "Auto Merge Double Post" feature did?

I had this problem with this modification before and uninstalled it, I figured by now it was fixed so I just installed this modification again and am having this problem where members are told "the time limit has passed for an edit" when they try to post an update to their threads... therefore it doesn't let them even post, it's calling their attempt to post, an "edit"... it's supposed to just merge their double post I thought. I have it set to 1 day, my understanding is if 24 hours have passed since their last post, it will let them post as normal and only act via merging if it's been under 24 hours since their last post.
Am I doing something wrong?

In most forums a double post is a sign of genuine new information rather than spamming. Therefore, you have NOT analyzed the problem correctly because in your mod a merged post does not bump the topic.
I only want double posts that are merged to bump topics, I do not want topics to be bumped when people intentionally edit their posts. So your new mod is not appropriate for me.

Quote from: M-DVD on January 19, 2009, 06:35:33 PMI'm not sure I like the idea of bumping/notifying a topic for a simple edit. First: Yes, are two MODs, but you shouldn't see the number, you should see the code. Both MOD are much less code and more efficient than the other (yes, two MOD, more efficient and light than one MOD).

QuoteLater, aldo (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=98660) did something to solve "the real problem with a real solution," and did this MOD (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1569). I am happy and I congratulate him because that was what I had to do, he has given the nail on the head.Hmm yeah it's a good thing he made that mod, but most of the SMF community doesn't seem to care. As I mentioned to him in his topic, he needs to evangelize the community about what the point is. Also, he should add even more capability to his mod. If you look into Aeva, you'll see that my own implementation of fetch_web_data() (called aeva_fetch()) also "tries" two other retrieval methods before calling it quits. I don't remember ever seeing someone tell me the lookup feature didn't work, actually.

I would like to use this mod to prevent users for adding "bla... bla..." like messages, intended to increase their posts number. It would be great that messages posted at less then 10 minutes (for instance...) to be merged into only one.
This mod provides this feature by the time between posts, or by the text of the messages? Because the users may bump the topic with different sentences, like: "up", or "anyone here?"...

There is a way to solve this?
I intend to allow an edit time of 10 minutes, but to allow unlimited merged messages posted sooner than 1 day after the 1st post. By the way: 1 day (time for allow the double post...) means 24 hours from the 1st post, am i right?
I don't want to allow unlimited time for editing a message (value = "0"), because this way a user may delete anytime the content of his messages...

Currently don't work in this way. The MOD work it throughout the forum.
And don't know if many people are interested in this feature.

great mod.
I have a problem.
When a user write a post, it is ok.
When hi write a next post, it is ok.
When hi write a next post, hi becomes a error and the post doesn´t save.

Hi,
Thanks for this nice mod. Is there any way to set topics to be bumped while messages are merged?
I mean;
A person will open a thread at 10:00AM
He will come back at 18:00PM when his thread is at the fifth place. He will reply and messages will be merged but his topic will bump, go to the first line. Leting us to know that there is a new reply even if it is merged.

Hey
I have some remarks/questions/possible feature requests:
I've been using a merge double post mod on my forum for several years. A few days ago we decided to get rid of tons of bloat and do a complete re-install. Upon searching for this mod I found it was no longer listed, but I did come up with your mod. I've looked over the code of your mod and it's quite elegant. The other mod merged the posts in the 'new' post, while this one seems to merge them in the 'old already present' post. Both ways of doing things have their ups and downs I suppose. Anyway...

I have not messed with the original settings since I installed it just yesterday, but I did uncheck Ignore Double Post Permission to see if that might help.

Thank you for being so sweet and getting back to me. However, I am using smf 1.1.9, and when I open Sources/Subs-Post.php, the code you said to search for does not turn up, so I am a bit lost.
Thank you so much for replying. I would appreciate it so much if we can figure this out. This mod is so useful!

QuoteI get the message each and every time I change windows, whether I'm trying to read other people's posts, post in my journal or reply to something.
When I go to change places within the forum (changing topics or whatever) it first gives me a blank screen with that error message, then the normal forum page(s) appear but the error message stays in the upper right corner of the screen. I use IE at work and Firefox at home and am seeing the error message in both places.
As far as the font goes, it shows this very large font - looks like about 16 pt on the screen - when I'm posting. It's identical to the font size used in the TMI warning box. But then once the post is actually "posted" it drops down to it's normal size.

Go to Forum » Administration Center » Permissions » General Permissions. Select group which you want to setting and check needed strings. On my site it works well with any groups. Global Mods and Admins see the merge button if there are doubled post, but I don't know what about regular users because their posts automatically merge. For example screenshot of Global Mods settings page.
But I don't know why 2 strings have same names... they make different things and I checked it trying all variants.

Quote from: Arantor on May 02, 2010, 06:18:57 AMI know, but I don't want switch to Classic Mode :)
The author only built it to use Classic mode permissions; there's two permissions, one for own and one for any.
If you switch to Classic Mode you'll see two permissions there with different names.

I get a white page after installing this mod when trying to go into Admin > Posts & Topics areas
Using RC4 with that package.
When I uninstall, I can go into the Admin > Posts & Topics area w/o problem.

You tell people to make changes that you don't think have any issues and when one is presented to you, you seem to ignore it. $context['double_post'] is, funnily enough, there for a REASON. Just because you don't understand that reason doesn't mean there isn't one.
And it's the cause of the displaying the manual merge button on every page because you're now not testing whether it should be displayed on a given post but displaying it all the time...
Quote from: Makar on January 16, 2011, 05:20:30 PMThat is pretty weird.
I have a board in which permission to write guests
all posts must be pre-approved by moderators.
before sending the visitor must solve a captcha, and answer any additional questions.
so here.
if I put this mod, the introduction of answering questions and solving a captcha is not mandatory
Guests can enter into the fields to answer anything you like and send a message
message is sent and there is no warning that the answers to the captcha entered non correctly!

Thanks for posting this fixed file. However, I might have just spotted a bug.
When installing it on my test forum (offline), I noticed that the modifications don't work for the "core" theme. (yes I clicked the box first and it said it passed the modification test on the core Display.template.php file...)
In the "default/Curve" theme, the "merge.gif" image loads perfectly fine beside the "Merge Posts" text. However, in the "core" theme, this doesn't happen. The "Merge Posts" text is there (however not in bold), but the "merge.gif" image isn't even though it's in the proper directory.
Do you know why this might be happening? This was the first mod I installed in the test forum, so there can't be any conflicting mods effecting it. Is there something more that needs to be added to the Display.template.php file in the core theme to get the image to properly show up? This is with SMF 2.0.2. Thanks.

Is there a way to make it so that the merged post will bump the thread as if it were a new post, but merge so that it is a part of the old post?
It would still look exactly as it does, but the bump would send the thread to the top of the list, mark it as unread, and bring it attention once more, without choking it up with a line of 'bump' posts.
I have an RP site, and it would be very good to be able to bump threads that have become forgotten or overlooked, without having to post new posts on it etc.
Is this possible?

Hello folks,
First of all - great work, very useful mod. There is only one little problem that I have noticed with this mod. After two posts are merged together automatically, I am not being notified about the new post when I click on the button that shows all unread posts (Show unread posts since last visit). The interesting thing is that I can see the icon for new posts while I am browsing the boards but the new post is not added in the unread section.
Any chances of fixing that? Thank you!

Hi,
sorry, i have to ask, i am confused.
Is there a Solution/Workaround changing the MSG IDs under which the combined Post was stored ?
Or was this Patch/Workaround i found in this Thread (very old Posting Date) only for SMF 1.x
For example what i want to have is:
Post 1, posted yesterday.
Post 2 posted today.
I wanna be notified about the new Post2 as a new Post of this user and i want the combined Post be stored with the MSG ID of the New Post,
and wann have deleted the old Post(MSG ID).
Is this possible with a little change in the Code i can patch by myself ?
Thank You.

I'm pretty sure the author won't care. But as long as not explicitly stated, there's nothing we can do.
Now please let's stop this side discussion. The mod works fine with the small manual edit.

You can't really install that that in 2.0.x versions...
This mod was developed for RC1, which suffered some intense changes until 2.0 final. This made it incompatible with recent versions. Since the author is long absent from SM.org and there is no licence that allows update of this mod, I'd advise you a mod request in the specific board.

Quote from: ‽ on August 28, 2014, 11:03:30 AMYou are absolutely right if it is a conversation. But I have some boards that it contains pictures, I mean sharing some pictures.
Except if you have A and B interspersed, how can it meaningfully merge A's posts?
Surely, if A and B are having a conversation, and you bunch up A's posts together, you break the flow of conversation.
Quote from: ‽ on August 28, 2014, 11:16:05 AM
You'd actually need to rewrite the mod to accomplish it because it's not just about having the button there, the underlying code will also refuse to merge the two because they're not consecutive.
It's a huge amount of work for what amounts to an edge case. If you *really* need to do it, you can do it by way of splitting the posts, merging the posts and remerging the topic, but it's not ideal on way too many levels from a user expectation standpoint.
