I have completely missed the spellchecker or is there not one in Beta 4

Is it enabled? It's available in SMF 2.0 beta 4. Go to Admin > Posts and Topics and confirm that Enable spell checking is checked. Otherwise, it might be that pspell was not installed or configured properly on your webhost.
