SMF Version: 2.0beta4p

Is it possible to assign a whole membergroup as a moderator of a group so the members in the 'moderatorgroup' are able to only moderate their assigned group?

No.  Only individual members can be made moderators of groups.
(The same as for adding per-board moderators).

You might need to have this moved to mod requests.
