Simple Machines announces the release of SMF 1.1.8, which addresses a few vulnerabilities found in 1.1.7. We would like to encourage all users to upgrade as soon as possible.
Together with the release of SMF 1.1.8, Simple Machines has released the latest development branch version: SMF 2.0 Release Candidate 1. If you are currently running 1.1.7 you can choose to upgrade to 1.1.8 or 2.0 RC1, both of which contain the security updates. Users still running SMF 1.0.x series can upgrade to SMF 1.0.16.
To upgrade, use the package manager to upgrade to 1.1.8. Simply visit your administration center, where a notice will be displayed, prompting you to upgrade. Then follow the simple instructions through the package installation!
If you cannot upgrade using the package manager, please follow the instructions posted in the Online Manual about installing and upgrading. If you experience a session verification error when inputting FTP details for updating process, please see this topic (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=278824.0).
It may be necessary to apply the upgrade manually if mod conflicts mean that you cannot install the patch through the package manager. Instructions for doing this can be found here. (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=260745.0)
Finally - please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response by visiting the relevant support board!
Regards,
Simple Machines

good news.
Could someone point me to the support thread for this?
You can create your own at SMF 1.1.x support.
EDIT : Oh and Congratulations for the release!
Worked like a charm on my 3 heavily moded SMF forums, sweet!
Great achievement. Upgraded.
Wow 1.1.8 :)
Upgraded :P

Try it via the package manager. If it shows errors, don't force the install. Instead, start a topic in our support board. SMF upgrades like this are usually non-events.
Thank you, upgraded....
Just upgraded to 1.1.8 on a very heavy mod laden 1.1.7 forum, worked like a charm. http://www.warandtactics.com/smf/index.php?action=forum
Thank you guys!

Our site runs a lot of mods... www.violentbydesignonline.com upgraded with absolutely no issues.
thanks !
Did the upgrade, all looks good! Thanks!
Sorry if this is a stupid question, - pretty new to SMF... Is there a description somewhere of what is contained in the upgrade, as in what bugs fixed, etc for this release?
You can download the changelog from the downloads page :)
But since it's so short for 1.1.8:
QuoteSMF 1.1.8 4 February 2009
================================================================================
February 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
! Added a confirmation message between requesting a remote package and showing it. (PackageGet.php, Packages template, Packages language files, Security.php)
! Fixed a session check that was set too strict, causing the session to be lost in case of changing permissions through FTP. (Packages.php) [Bug 2734]
! Some URL's created with BBC were not properly sanitized. (Subs-Post.php)
Just noticed the bad month. Will check the trunk changelog :P
great work!
woohoo just updated to 1.1.8! :D
Good to know.. Finally we have SMF 2 RC1 available for public along with 1.1.8 upgrade.. nice work as always !
upgrade went well, but I did have session error during package upload - forced to change permissions then it worked flawlessly - wonder if this is bug fix mentioned above?
great job... :)
Upgrated...
Upgrade it, just work fine for a time ;p

yes, it is.
Sort of ironic, huh? Bad situation to be in when the update method is broken :P
Just updated (via package manager) to 1.1.8 a forum with 41 mods and a lot of manual code changes. Everything works perfect! Thanks guys! :D
Great job! :) Many thanks! :)
Upgraded! :)
wow!
Thanks, upgraded!
Also, whats the difference?
security fixes and a bug fix.
Great, I'm upgrading NOW :P
Just upgraded all of my 5 boards :)
Thank you Simple Machines! :)

Just upgraded. Thanks SMF
Great job! Upgraded without any problem. :D
Awsome news, Thanks for this update.
Installed without problem on my smf 1.1.7 with tinyportal and more mod!
I have only fixed manually my Packages.italian.php and i've fixed all package mod in my ftp (to fix uninstall function) :)
Great work ;)
37 Mod packages installed, plus about 4 or 5 manual mods done, and the 1.1.8 upgrade install went as smooth as silk.
Thanks!
Upgraded with no problems.
Thank you
I was scared to upgrade, here's a famous quote from IBM in the good old days: "You want to be on the leading edge, not the bleeding edge! So don't put the last upgrade!"
Well, I upgraded my site and it went without a glitch!
Congratulations to All involved!
Thanks for the update!!
Vincent
Thanks good job
Thanks!
Im always a little dubious about updates, I crossed my fingers when hitting the auto upgrade in the admin panel (please let all my mods work), but the upgrade to 1.1.8 was faultless, wolfet.co.uk (http://wolfet.co.uk) successfully upgraded and working sweetly, keep up the great work guys.
OMG!!!!!!!!
I can not believe it, just yesterday download the 1.1.7 update and when I see the 1.1.8 update!!!
Frankly I thought it was time for a new version of the 1.x
I will have to think that Drupal and SMF is competing to see who pulls the updates faster.
Many thanks to the development team and the Community.
I'm having issues, I posted a thread in 1.1.X support
THANKS for another great update.
This forum software is the best imho. Keep up the great work, you guys are fantastic!
Thank you guys , upgrading my site to smf 1.1.8

I upgraded in about five minutes with no problems!
Great job guys!
Great Jobs! Will SMF upgrade from 1.x.x to 2.x.x in the future as painless as from 1.1.7 to 1.1.8?
That would be great for everyone using 1.x.x.
Keep up the good jobs!

I take it you didn't read or look at the first post of this thread, I'm sure it contained two files that were only the affected files for respective versions of SMF.
1.1.8 Installed slick as glass in under 1 minute !!!
Congrats and well done !!!!!

Of course not. This is the "Community" - I don't trust any files posted here. There is a page called "Simple Machines Downloads" - no login, no dubious attachments, just the files I want. Is it that complicated?
The person who posted these packages is a Developer, more then trustable... ;)
Anyways, you should see a link in your Admin CP home to upgrade your version of SMF by clicking the link and it will download the package and you apply it, and done...

Well the files posted and displayed in the first post is by the Lead Developer of SMF. Which is the person who created the package and also created the whole file you downloaded from the download section. So your level of mistrust is a little misguided and amusing. I think you've made it overly complicated, but that is your prerogative.
Considering that Compuart is the one who put the files on the downloads page, and placed the attachments on his post, and the attachments haven't been edited, nor has the post, i'd go as far as to say that you can trust Compuart's packages.
You can also update easily through the package manager with an officially released update package if you go to Admin > Packages and click the download link in the alert box that pops up.

Ok - so for one useable update package, I have to register, to search the Community, to know and trust Compuart, Grudge, Thantos, Owdy, Meriadoc, bostasp... Are you serious?
QuoteYou can also update easily through the package manager
Not on a running system.

Well 1,000's of other users don't seem to have a problem working out a person with the Lead Developer and developer badge posting an official patch is a person of some notoriety and trustworthy within the SMF project.
It's on the main news section of the site, it's in the main news section of the forums. I would assume a person, if having issues, will have to register to ask a support question so would have little trouble finding their way around.
Quote from: FfdG on February 05, 2009, 06:45:03 PMNot on a running system.
Huh? The internal AdminCP update process sole use is for running systems. To patch while on the fly and retain any custom modifications.
FfdG,
The files are there for you to see any changes made. The first post contains a package manager upgrade, which will show you any changes it is making. It is just a compressed file which with the proper software (since windows doesn't support opening .tar.gz by default), you can open the file Scratch that, the files where .zip files, You can open them anyways without the need for additional software.
You could as well easily do a diff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diff) (If you know how to read a diff) between SMF 1.1.7 and SMF 1.1.8 to see the changes for yourself.
If you can't trust us, I don't know what else to say really. You are free to download and view the source for yourself.
Thank you
Good Work
Done
I upgraded my forum easily but am getting an error. Can anyone help?
You should post a support topic in the Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0) board ;)
Worked just fine on my board!
sweet! thanks.
is there a changelog somewhere?

Well 1,000's of other users don't seem to have a problem
1000's of other people don't care. If I open a thread "New unofficial shiny boost update - makes your SMF 90% faster and more secure" - one day later there would be 999 "thank you - great patch" messages.

But it was broken in the past and, to be honest, your update policy sucks. Different files in packages (1.1.7), changed package files without notification (1.1.6?), wrong versioned files...

That's the normal way (for me) to apply changes. We have two identical installations (test and running incl. revision control).
QuoteIf you can't trust us, I don't know what else to say really.
It's just a usability issue. Put the small patch in the download section, so there is no need to trust unknown community members, to login, to find the first message in an upgrade thread...
QuoteYou are free to download and view the source for yourself.
I did it for some parts and you know that it's no pleasure like most PHP code.

Yes, but try the internal AdminCP upgrade process first. Then only if you get a Test Failed error do you need to perform any manual code modification. You might still find it all goes through without issue.

For the first time ever the upgrade came with some surprises for me ... the files were upgraded to 1.1.8, the database ... not. Fortunately I found the fix using the magic "search" feature here ;D You guys rule ! :)

The database wasn't affected by this update.
I had to manually complete the upgrade by changing the smfVersion variable to 1.1.8 in the {db_prefix}Settings table. I never said that it was the upgrade alone causing the error, but it was nevertheless related to it. :)
The smfVersion in the database is not updated unless a database change is made. That hasnot happened for sometime, for 1.1.
What was being caused by that? That setting is there only to reference what the last version the database was upgraded was
Thank you!

Had some trouble connecting to ftp server (this may be due to settings in my browser or some errors from me in filling out username, pw etc), webinstall did the job in no time, and feels safe and secure.
You might find that, that method removes any custom coding and/or mod coding? But glad it worked. Strange as I'm sure it uses the same FTP details you would have had to have used in the AdminCP area.
