Simple Machines is proud to announce the release of SMF 2.0 RC1. This first Release Candidate for 2.0 concludes the period of beta testing and is one of last steps towards 2.0 going gold. Numerous bugs that were reported after the release of Beta 4 have been fixed and improvements have been made to security, stability, and performance.
If you are currently running 2.0 beta 4 we advise you to upgrade to 2.0 RC1 as it is more stable and secure. Charter Members using 2.0 RC1 are advised to upgrade for security improvements not available in the preview release.
Together with the release of SMF 2.0 RC1, a security release has been made for the 1.1 branch: SMF 1.1.8. If you are currently running 1.1.7 you can choose to upgrade to 1.1.8 or 2.0 RC1, both of which contain the security updates.
Major changes since the last release:
* Fixed a significant number of bugs reported by Beta Testers, Charter members, and community members.
* Improved security by updating session checks and building in extra checks.
* Fixed a small number of security vulnerabilities reported by the community.
* Updated the interface to ensure a more intuitive navigation.
* Updated the profile interface to be more consistent with the administration and moderation center navigation.
* Several theme improvements for better semantics and standards support.
* Better database layer support.
Note: the packages include everything you need to install a fresh board, or to upgrade from 2.0 Beta 4 – or any previous version of SMF. You can check out the changelog on the download page for a full list of changes.
Please continue to report all bugs and request support in the dedicated boards. We're very keen to hear your feedback, positive and negative, to help us continue to improve the software.

if you read when you download, the answer is not to use it on one.. ;)
unless you know what you are doing. O:)
yeah i rarely read anything. :D
I guest i need to make a test site and play.
OMG! Awesome! Can't wait to upgrade.
Time for a few more tests. :)

After testing it, it was too tough to resist the features and functionality. So, I have had the previous version running on a live site since its release, and it's working well without any issues. I will be merging this version with a larger site (30k unique monthly) later next week.
Truly the best forum software. THANKS!
Finally... I've been awake for almost 30 hours, and I'm definitely not going to sleep until I check this out :P
Great news! This will be a fun weekend updating SMF on my boxes :)
Thank you for all the hard work guys! You're really the best!
CONGRATS............. :)
hope TinyPortal upgrade to SMF2.0 ASAP .... Im waiting for both of them on my website :D
Congratulations!
Hooray!
Ah, a long awaited release. Well done to the devs that spent hours fixing bugs and improving SMF! :D
As an interesting note for people to chew on: There's around 330-340 changes, updates, and bugfixes in this version compared to Beta 4.
Haven't checked the exact number. But still. That's quite an achievement. And with that, we're down below 200 open bugs for 2.0.
Good job!
Uh oh, now you've done it! Now people are gonna get that fresh minty SMF 2.0 feeling and bug you even more about when the final version is gonna be out :D
hmm thinks smf should be compared to "babyoil" :P
Good..............................
Great Work All!
I hesitated for ages before going with version 2.0 RC1, but as soon as i did upgrade I kicked myself for not doing it sooner. It really is a big jump from 1.xx, it is just nicer in everyway.
Thank you and keep up the good work.
"Excellent, all my plans are coming to fruition.
Smithers, massage my brain!"

I feel so hapy, but I don't updata now, because I'm waiting to see some MOD's update!
Don't use mods, go vanilla. Learn to keep it cut back, mean, simple. 8)
It IS good news though isn't it? SMF 2. RC1 — congrats guys and gals.
Congratulation guys, keep the good work!
Aha..
Finally RC1 is out !!
Ah, it was a long anticipated release. Great work Devels ;)
-[n3rve]
configurations, great work... :)
Wow! Finally!
Congratulations! Hooray! Super! Very good job! :)
thanks! Congrats everyone!!!
congrats
Congratulations and big thanks to all who made this possible!
I just did some testing on localhost with my board (1.1.8) that has over 200000 posts... Teste upgrade went flawlessly :)
I'm seriously considering upgrade...
Will upgrades after RC1 be small? I mean, similar like 1.1.7 > 1.1.8, simple patch from admin panel?
It won't be possible to do patches via package manager until AFTER smf goes final.
There will be simply too many changes until then.
Great news :)
hmm.that is great news
Finally :D Great work devs.
Thanks
I'd say you addressed a lot of bugs and missfeatures in the SMF 2.0 B4 version.
Excellent work guys and girls ;)
Congratulations ! Thanks all team..
can i just say a BIG well done to the guys at SMF who put all the hard work into making this SMF 2.0 RC1 available to the public.
ive been using it since 10.30am GMT today and i love it.
WELL DONE SMF GEEKS
Wicked! Now... how to upgrade... lol, I read it and it's very complicated.
its not hard to upgrade. i used the full upgrade package and upgraded from 1.1.8 to 2.0 RC1 in under 5 minutes
I do not understand the database bit though.
Once the upgrade files are uploaded the update is a simple case of point and click.
My 3yr old could do it.
hmmm i never touched the database part. the upgrade script did that all for me. i just clicked a couple of things and hay presto it was done. dont think you personally need to touch the database at all. Support staff back me up on this. am i right or wrong about not touching the database.
You are correct.
i thought i was right. not often wrong mind lol O:)
Digg it... http://digg.com/software/SMF_2_0_Release_Candidate_1_is_out_to_the_public
Is SMF digg proof? :o
Only one way to find out.........
I don´t know what i´m doing wrong. I´ve updatet from beta4 to RC1 and i get an error message now.
theres no way i can get into the forum now any idea?????
this is the message i get:
Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/mnt/web7/20/54/51902354/htdocs/smf_2-0-beta4p_install/Sources/Subs-Aevac.php' (include_path='.:/opt/RZphp5/includes') in /mnt/web7/20/54/51902354/htdocs/smf_2-0-beta4p_install/Sources/Subs.php on line 2385

Grats and thanks to all of the DEVs and support team for your outstanding dedication & help. You all are very generous and I appreciate it greatly!!!
OH EM GEE. Downloading this tonight and hope it works w/ my theme + mods! Test site here I come!
Quick question, if we don't like RC1 or if we want to switch back, is there a way to (without using backups)?

No.
Good work Compuart and the developers. :P
One step closer to gold. :D
What is the difference between SMF 1.1.7 & SMF 2.0RC1?
Will the future upgrade from 1.x.x to 2.x.x as painless as 1.1.7 to 1.1.8 upgrade? Thanks.
Really, really, really good work!!!!!
Thanks!!! :D

A lot... night and day. Lots of new added features, improved security, database abstraction, semantic theme, and plenty more.

You will need to do a full upgrade to SMF2.0. (Replacing files and running the upgrade) Once 2.0 gold is out you will be able to upgrade via the package manager for minor releases, IIRC.
congrats to the devs
Congratulations to all. Great work. :)
Congrats! Great job to everyone involved.
MUCHOS Gracias! :)
thank god!
I hope, you post a friendly guide about how to upgrade from smf 1.1.8 :)
btw, mkportal still unavailable for smf2?
Thank you
Nice work
Installing on a vanilla board now - hopefully the semantic changes won't break my custom b4 theme on another. :)
To be redundant - thanks for the effort and hard work to all!
Any expected release date of final 2.0? Sorry for my ignorance but I am visiting SMF after a very long gap...! Good to see RC1 version of 2.0.
We don't currently have a timeline. But I can assure you that we are working as quickly as we can to get it done :)
Ive got a question
On the page for downloading page that it is not recommended to run this on a production website
What do you mean by "Production Website"?
I would like to test this as there are features that I would like that is only compatiable with this version.
It means your official live forum.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
I will wait till the first official release is out.
Thank you guys/gals for a job well done.
One update done, painless...
Cheers,
Todd.
Great news! But i still hold my horses for the final version. ;)
Why the people call it 2.0 gold? It will be paid, or still free under the same license as 1.1.x?
Thanks to all the people involved in the project!
Still free. Gold is just a nickname for it.
Great !!
thank you a lot for this smf release, i cant' wait to try it, but i don't know how the upgrade from 1.1.8, it's there any docs or wiki?
How can i do the upgrade please?
PS: I don't know if that's the place the ask for that, so if isn't I'm really sorry for that :-X
First thing: create a full backup!
As discussed here (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=283111.0), it's recommended to uninstall mods, perform large update and then reinstall mods.
If you don't have any mods installed i guess you can simply apply the large update (http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_2-0-rc1_upgrade.zip).
If there's something wrong going on with the update create a new topic in this area (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0).
Thank you for your awesome work!
How many RC's will be before gold?
yays!

We may never know..
It could be 1, could be 5, and it could be... but hopefully not... 10
Have just installed the new system on the test site with no problems. Well done chaps, almost there! :)
Forgive my ignorance though but will there be a new default theme with SMF going gold? The more I see it, the more I like this forum theme.
It maintains a unique style that is up to date and compliments all the features the forum offers, so is this likely (or how likely) to feature in the final version, or do you have anything else in the pipeline?
I read the comment regarding this theme not being available but was a modified default theme so I guess it would not be too much work for 2.0 final?
I must admit though, the 1.1 theme is beginning to look extremely / slightly outdated, no offence intended considering all the new features we have.
I reckon an up to date, but not as in your face new theme as "your main competitor" and you would be on to a winner!
I do realise there are many great custom examples out there too, but I tend to stick with mainstream development versions :)
congratulation !!

Yeah. Why is there still the old theme in 2.0 RC1? Why cannot people enjoy the theme this site using?
Welcome to SMF

Aside from a few colour changes there aren't that many differences in the theme used on this site. The theme used here is exclusive for this site
The theme here is, really, more or less a modified version of the theme available in 2.0 RC1. That is, it utilizes the more semanticized templates. It really is mostly CSS and color changes -- though there's a few customized images in there as well.

Well, it is barely possible that someone is planning something better.
Great work once again! :) Update was flawless from on my board and I had really fun customizing my own theme with all the new css and stuff in the 2.0.
And being using SMF on my site since the first public I can only say many thanks.

Ya I think you would :P
come on, give us some credit here :P
woo! updating now.
clearly awesome news. been waiting for a long time, will update 3+ boards.
I assume it's a regular upgrade procedure that should go relatively flawless if I don't have mods installed, right?
Should do. I've done test sites and as long as there are no mods it seems fine.
good work people
thanks!
Excellent work, guys.
Thanks SMF! 8)
