I have to ask: Beta 4 --> RC1, is the "small update" just a package? Can I install it with the package manager or... ?
If you have mods... Which I think you do... I would use the large upgrade package via ftp :)
Should I uninstall the mods and return to the default theme before performing the upgrade?
(Not delete, just uninstall)
The large upgrade should deal with the mods :)

They are not patches. You cant do them via admin. Also I personally would uninstall all mods before running the upgrade.
ETA: Oh and I'd delete them after uninstalling myself.

I have never had a issue with a large upgrade package not dealing with mods..... What point are you at now?

You are correct. And I tried it on a forum with a few mods, but not SimplePortal and I think that's what's thrown a kink in the system.
I might advise to other to (at least) uninstall mods before upgrading, then reinstalling upon completion.
