Hey all,
I couldnt find a bug report about this with search so sorry if this is a duplicate.
I have issues lately with SMF RC1 and private messages.
When I get the notification when I enter the site it, like you know, asks if you want to view the pm in a new window or not. When I click cancel (so I dont want to view the PM at that time) I get a blank page and I have to refresh. I dont seem to have the issue on 1.1.8.
- Liroy
Hey Liroy.
I can't replicate this on RC1 in IE7/8 nor Firefox 3.
What browser are you using?
Any extra popup blockers and stuff?
regularexpression: Which version of firefox you using?
I haven't had it hapen in 3.0.5 and prior, but once I upgraded to 3.0.6, This started happening. Perahaps a change was made which broke this?
I'm using
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009011913 Firefox/3.0.6 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729)
edit: and the only two plugins that I'm using are using are
- User Agent Switcher
- Disable that god damn annoying awesome bar
Hi,
sorry for the reply.
I am running:
FireFox 3.0.6.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; nl; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009011913 Firefox/3.0.6
No modifications or plugins, I dont want my browser to slow down, hehe.
- Liroy
So the difference is xp vs vista?
That could be.
I dont have XP running anywhere, but I could try it again on Windows 7.
Or someone else must be willing to test this out :P
It will be weird if this is causing the issue though.
This appears to be an issue in Firefox 3.0.6.
I get this as well, but only since upgraded to Firefox 3.0.6. I haven't tried to download a nightly yet to see if they fixed this. I haven't even gone over their changelog to see what was changed that might of caused this.
We are also experiencing this issue on our forum.
FF 3.0.7
SMF RC1 also tested on beta 4 same problem. No problems when tested on SMF 1.1.7
Edit - Just tested it on SMF default theme and it still does the same RC1

It is a problem
with Firefox 3.0.6 and 3.0.7; but I don't think the problem is
in Firefox. I think the problem is in the new SMF version. When we upgraded the forum, the problem began. When I upgraded my Firefox, the problem continued.
Not only do I get a blank page if I choose to cancel PM's; but I if I choose to load the PM's, my browser begins to slow down. The longer I stay on an SMF forum, the slower my browser gets to the point where it takes minutes instead of seconds to load a page. I can open another non-SMF forum in another window and I have no slow down. The only cure for the slowdown is to exit the SMF forum and close that window. When I reopen the SMF forum all is well unless I choose to open a PM in another window - then the slow down begins all over again and progressively gets worse.
I disabled all Firefox addons and had no effect. I ran Firebug and Yslow (Firefox addons) and found a problem in one line of code that seems to show up consistently. Not beiing a programmer, the Yslow report does not mean much to me except that there is a problem.
I had no problem until we upgraded our forum to the new SMF version. I have no problem on any other forum or any other site. My uneducated guess is that the new SMF version uses an IE protocol that is not compatible with Firefox and the version was not tested thoroughly with Firefox. I can live with having to refresh if I choose to cancel PM's. It is no big deal. But I cannot live with the horrendous slowdown if I choose to open a PM in a new window. The problem appears to be with the PM module and Firefox.
Weird,i've recently tested this on Firefox 3.0.7 and pm popup works without any problems
Also i didn't get a blank page,when i click on cancel ::)
Just now, I received to PM's and I clicked cancel. All worked perfectly. Next PM notification, I will click on load in a new window and see if I still get a slowdown.

I also had the problem under Firefox 3.0.6.
Tested using Opera Version 9.27
The pop up displays asking if I would like to read PM in new window. Answer yes the pop up closes but it does not open a new window. I then get taken back to my original page and it carries on loading. I then need to select "My Messages [1]" option and open and read from there.
Tested using IE 8.0.6

The pop up with the PM take a long time to load but it does in the end. When I clcik on my new message it does not take me to the message itself. I have to scroll down to read the message

I found the same in IE. The PM window was very slow.
In Firefox, if I click on "Cancel" in the PM popup, sometimes the orginal page stips loading and sometimes it does not. But opening PM's in a new tab from the forum menu does not cause the slow down.
There is definitely a bug in the PM module.

I don't think, this is a bug, because the same problem is not appearing on all RC1 sites
I am having it on most of my RC forums I visit :o
I think this is due to one of the security fixes that occurred in 3.0.6.
3.0.7 hasn't fixed this, but I am fairly sure. I haven't had the time to try a firefox nightly long enough to see if Firefox 3.1/3.5 has this issue or not.
This occurs on my 1.1 board as well.
It is definitely a Firefox issue with RC and it seems to involves the Messages module. I belong to a slew of other forums using various software and only RC has this problem with Firefox.
Well I have now had to disable pop up on PM on all the forum I am visiting :'(
I have just noticed that the spell checker pop up does the same thing. It just sits in the loading state but never does load. I have the same problem here with it as well
Yes I too have had this for quite some time with Firefox. I currently have it using 3.0.7 (had it with 3.0.6). I do not think it's entirely a SMF fault. The content is $_POSTed but is halted at any redirection/refresh.

Thank you Rumbaar for the input. At least I know I am not going crazy. I had the problem with FF 3.0.6 and it continues with 3.0.7. I did not have any problem until we upgraded to RC1.
I agree this is a combination between FF and SMF but the question is who is going to fix it. :o I cannot see any of us being able to take this to FF developers and have any notice taken of it.
I have now also posted this on the support.mozilla.com site ???

Let me know what the folks at Mozilla have to say.
Any updates? :)
If you activate popup on private message, depending on browser, it's doing strange things (tested on http://www.furgovw.org):
Firefox: You get a blank page and private message in a new window.

Internet Explorer & Safari: If you click OK, simply goes wherever you was going before popup.
Its a duplicate of this bug report.

At the moment we're unsure whether its an SMF or a Firefox bug.
ok, thx!
I can no longer get this to occur as of Firefox 3.0.8.
Anyone else able to confirm this?

I noticed the speed was good today using Firefox 3.0.8. But I was not on a long time and I had no PM popups - which initiate the slowdown trouble. But I can say the speed was better with the FF upgrade.
I haven't been able to reproduce this since 3.0.8 came out.
I did some research on this one as well and apparantly others have been having the same problem with the parent window "freezing"
I'll keep an eye on it and see if it happens again in FF 3.0.8
I have just tested it with FF 3.0.8 and it is still an issue :'(
I also upgraded to the latest Java version and that may be a factor for the better loading speed.
I got it, but only while making a post. I couldn't get it to occur by just sitting on the board index or browsing the forum.
I will need to test this more.

Moving the relevant javascript to the bottom of the page fixes this.
Thank you, Vekseid. I will make sure Dirtrider sees this.
Something new has now started up with one of my members since he upgraded to FF 3.0.8. When he tries to use the smilies he gets the following :'( :'( :'(
Error: storeCaret is not defined
Source File: http://triumphtalk.com/index.php?action=post;topic=4839.0;num_replies=6#
Line: 1
Error: editorHandlemessage is undefined
Source File: javascript:alert('TODO: FIXME')

These are the errors I'm getting from clicking the html code buttons, the last error is from clicking on the 'more' button for smilies.

...err, no. Odd.
Anyway, I think I mentioned that you need to put the popup notification js at the end of the page before the </body> tag...
Are we making any progress on this issue at all
I know regularexpression has spent many an hour working on it without finding an appropriate fix yet (and yes, he did try vekseid's)
Indeed. I've spent many an hour on a few separate occasions trying to lock down the bug to specific javascript calls.
I've got steps to replicate it. But sometimes it goes random.
The content is there, but for whatever reason Firefox is just refusing to render it.
I've held off making a post in here until now obviously cos I've made no progress.
Moving the call to just before the </body> did fix it (so we render before doing the popup), but I was hoping of finding an alternative solution to the problem. I'm hoping to get another dev to have a look at this bug before RC2. But we might have to just bite the bullet and do it that way anyways.
Ah thanks for that this one is really a weird one ;D
I get this when i just login and hit cancel. It also happens when I go to view unread replies..(its quite random though, its not always like that)
It is somewhat a problem only with Firefox. In Chrome it works fine and also in IE..
In Vista it works fine.. Its just XP issue...
I've finally got around to tracking this bug.
http://dev.simplemachines.org/mantis/view.php?id=3395
/me is still hoping to find the cure for this bug :P

I have the same problems in Vista as I do in XP ;D
For the past 3 private messages, when I get the popup saying I have a new PM, the page I was viewing goes blank and I must hit refresh to view it.
Just wondering if this is a bug or just my browser being screwy.
BTW, I'm using Firefox 3.0.9
See attached screenie
I think I've seen a bug here before on that, related fo FF and PM popup...
This maybe: http://dev.simplemachines.org/mantis/view.php?id=3395
Did you click on cancel, or OK to open a new window?
On OK and Cancel. Still brought up a blank screen.
This is a duplicate bug, it is related to the pm popup issue in firefox 3.
I got the same bug.. using XP / Firefox i get a blank screen if i click cancel !
I'm not sure if this was happening before I upgraded to FF 3.0.10 this morning as I only just managed to find the pop-up switch yesterday ::) but it does do it now and I'm on Mac OSX 10.5.4 - so it's not just a pc related thing. Oh and it doesn't happen on the 1.7 forum either
Mudlark, I have committed a fix to the svn to resolve this issue.
(by calling the js function on window load)
So it should be fixed for rc2 when it is released.

This site (sm.org) have this bug too. I think site need this fix (:
It will be fixed here when we upgrade to rc2 or to a development version, for the moment we are still running rc1-1 like everyone else.
