Good afternoon.
I have just tried to install some mods (namely ShoutBox, but I assume that further mods may pose me the same problem) and after the initial various extracting and modding of files ie.

It asks me for my ftp information. :o
LainaaFTP Information Required
Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files.
FTP Server: Port:
Username:
Password:
Local path to SMF:
.
The problem with this is that I am currently running this website from my home pc and have not worried about ftp at all. Currently the site is not online and all testing is done locally with me having access to all files and r/rw privlidges.
Are there certain files I should be changing as I feel it is unnecessary to set up an ftp server.
Thanks for any help. :D
geuss you need to setup an ftp server then, i would suggest bulletproof ftp server, just run the name trough google and youll find it...
That doesn't make sense to me though. :(
My understanding of an FTP server is to be able to upload files from a remote location to the server in question. I run the server from my own pc at home and have no need for this. The only time I would consider it was when/if I decided to host a friends website in which case I would set up FTP to allow them to upload their website files to my pc.
Now if I am missing an important point regarding FTP by all means inform me. I figure that because at any time I can just sit in front of my server pc I should be able to do all modding etc by editing files not through FTP. ::)
the FTP server information is also used to change/set the permissions on the files being uploaded through the package manager.
The package manager edit's the files for you, if they are not writable, it will ask you for ftp details to change their permissions to make them writable.
If you don't have ftp set up, just make them writable and it won't ask you for ftp details.
Ok,
So in theory, on a server running windows xp and logged in as an administrator and accessing the forum from localhost (127.0.0.1), the files should already have the permissions required to be written to?. :-\
When I first decided to host my own website this was one of the most confusing things to me. The CHMODding of files. On windows I later found out that chmodding is really only useful when using FTP.
As I am hosting from my own pc running on xp pro, I don't know how to edit the read write permissions because I already can read and write them all. :o
the problem is that while YOU might be logged on as administrator, this does not allow PHP to use your access rights...
the files must be (in windows parlance) Full Control by ALL
http://unknown.network32.net/tutorial.basic-server#install.php
Search that page for write
Thanks, I didn't find that info in my searches.
Is it not strange that none of that information is readily available in tutorials about setting up a webserver on windows? :o
But unfortunately this doesn't make any difference when trying to install a mod. It still asks for my FTP information.
I have tried several mods and have noticed that none of them specify what files require the permissions to be changed. I'm pretty sure that if I knew what files to give 'everyone' full control of it would be possible to get these mods installed.
Have you tried just pushing the next button?
Also is your server in C:/ like C:/server or such because I know I get problems if its not in the root.
Yeah, tried pushing next. Just takes me back to the same page. Further to that my weber is under c:\web this dir contains all web files apache, php, mysql etc. the path to my webroot is c:\web\htdocs.
This how it has always been. Is this a problem you think?
Are you using IIS or Apache?
Have you allowed the NTFS "delete", "modify", and "write" permissions to SYSTEM and, if you're using IIS, IUSR_COMPUTERNAME? Remember, this has to be for *all* files and folders under SMF; you may have to check the box to reset child permissions.

Perhaps of no big help - but after I started using KF Web server (http://www.keyfocus.net/kfws/), it has been smooth operation of the server ever since...ftp works fine without me doing anything etc.

I am using apache2.0.53 and yes I haved checked and SYSTEM has all necessary permissions.
Still the same. It asks me for my FTP info. Maybe I should bite the bullet and get FTP setup (even though it goes against all my logical reckoning). It just means I have to learn how to set up another program and learn to use it. :o

My first server was KF Web Server but I had no end of trouble getting PHP and mysql to work with it. :( It was very user friendly when I was using it though.
Yes, it was a bit difficult to find the information needed. But a search through the forum solved that quickly. ;)
I might suggest you try apachefriends a google search will give you a link, its install takes only a minute and doesnt change any registry settings and deleting is only a matter of deleting the folder. I used smf on that and it didnt ask for any FTP info. :)
Also has, mail, FTP, perl, php, mysql, phpmyadmin and all the other jazz like GD

I might suggest you try apachefriends
I have been through a bunch of packages thinking my install might be to blame and apachefriends was one of them. I installed it then did a fresh install of SMF and it still prompts me for FTP details. I have also triad Foxserv, phpTriad, apache2triad and easyphp, all with the same results.
Now from my experience, if something has the same problem given so many options, the answer is usually something really simple and something I am doing, not the programs.
>:( If only I knew what it was. :'(
why not FTP to localhost and chmod the files :P

I told you it was something really simple :D.
1. I didn't realise until I just tried, that WinXP has a built in FTP server :-[
2. I needed to un-remark the LoadModule for FTP in Apache ;)
3. Why didn't I try to do this many days ago?
Thanks all. Now I can get these Mods installed.
/me goes to find this server.

Just so you know Trekkie.
You need to have IIS installed and is for WinXP pro only. You don't need to serve through IIS just have it installed.
