Sendmail was a built in process if I remember but i probably dont but I know some soemthing like postfix is a linux mail thing. SMTP will require your ISP's SMTP details.

Most of the other programs (like qmail) have sendmail backwards-compatibility. Sendmail is an older script that is very possible.
Saying sendmail just means PHP's settings in it's php.ini file.
