total n00b here, so bare with me. yesterday, I installed a flashing message icon for new pm's, and also did the following, but didn't test it:

I just set the message, entered maintainance mode and came up with the following:
Lainaa
Maintenance Mode
Board Offline For Maintainance. Back online by 10am EST. Please visit soon!
so, I assumed it may have been the changing of the Login.template.php from the link above, but I changed it back, and still get the same message. can anyone suggest what else the problem could be, and how to resolve it? or at least get out of maintenance mode manually?

download your Settings.php and open it. Looking at the link it seems that $maintenance is probaly set to 2
$maintenance = 0 normal operation
$maintenance = 1, maintenance mode, only admins can log in
$maintenance = 2, untouchable/completely disabled.
I suggest you change it to 1 and upload it again. Then you can see if everything still works. If everything checks out you can use the admin panel (server settings) to turn off maintenance mode ($maintenance = 0)
according to Settings.php, it's set to 1 already:
$maintenance = 1; # Set to 1 to enable Maintenance mode
$mtitle = 'Maintenance Mode'; # Subject for display
$mmessage = 'Board Offline For Maintainance. Back online by 10am EST. Please visit soon!'; # Message Description for display
can you direct me to which table that $maintenance is under? I didn't see it anywhere.
$maintenance isn't in a table, you can only find it in Settings.php
Is MySQL running? Is the connection information in Settings.php correct? Can you see in phpMyAdmin if the tables of SMF still exist?

yes, MySQL is running, everything is correct in Settings, and the tables still exist for SMF in phpMyAdmin. I'm just puzzled why there is no option for me to login to turn maintenance mode off. every other time I've gone into maintenance mode, it never displayed just text, like it's doing now. it always still showed the theme, and asked for login information. the only thing I changed this time, is I entered custom text from the admin > server settings when I switched it over.
If you change Settings.php and set $maintenance to 0, does it display an error then?
changing $maintenance to 0 I get the following:

would this indicate that the host is having a problem with their MySQL server? I'm sorry for the total n00b questions, trying to learn :)
also wanted to note that Admin.php is chmod 777 and still giving the error above.
SMF tries to write to the settings file that an error occured, but it doesn't have the permissions to change settings.php, that is where all the warnings come from. And your right, SMF isn't able to contact MySQL. It's probaly down/crashed. For this you'll need to contact your host.
thanks for all the help. I just chmod 666 to settings, so now it doesn't display the long list of errors. just gives the problem connecting to database message. I'll get in touch with my host to determine the problem. thanks for all the help, I appreicate it.
