Hello,
I'm running simple portal with SMF 2 beta right now on http://www.cricketvoice.com/
the article addition feature is a nice tool to have but i'm not quite satisfied with the lack of control i have over the home page in regards to adding photos, graphics, etc.

Any suggestions?

Have you posted at SimplePortal requesting any features that you need?

Alternatively you can either look at the other available portal solutions (ezportal, tinyportal, portamx) or take a look at SMF SSI system. See: SSI Readme (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=400)
