We are very proud to announce the release of SMF 1.1 Beta 1 to Charter Members tonight. This is another large milestone that adds many new features and refines areas of our interface. You've been able to use this version of our software here for the past week or so as we completed internal beta testing. Like when we were in a closed beta of SMF 1.0, we will not be releasing this beta beyond our group of Charter Members. We'd like to once again thank everyone who has helped SMF from its conception to the point it is at today.
Some of the major changes made in this release are:
- Added a search section to the admin center, including new options for search - like fulltext support
- Changed the way that avatars can be handled, offering the option for storing avatars separate to attachments (for a speed improvement), and the ability to force external avatars to be downloaded to the server
- Added additional notification settings, for selecting whether a user wishes to be notified on all events, and whether they wish to receive the message body in the notification
- Revamp of the theme settings area, to vastly improve theme management including more user friendly editing of themes, and a preview for style sheet editing.
- Overhauled the current registration system, including better handling of activation methods and optional COPPA compliance
- Added a sidebar to the personal message area, including support for "labeling" personal messages, and the option to display a capacity bar showing the state of the users inbox
- Attachments are no longer lost on preview
- Added support for custom message icons - by theme and board
- Added PM support for users accessing the forum through WAP2 or iMode.
- Extended the current xml feeds to include atom and rdf
- Added support for previewing posts without reloading the page, and username autocompletion when sending PMs
- Added new BBC tag "html", to allow administrators to add HTML to their posts
- Added a new setting for maximum time after a post has been made that it can be edited or deleted
- Calendar management given it's own area in the admin center, where holidays can be edited and/or added
- It is now possible to post events that are not locked to a specific topic
- Improved the admin interface to be cleaner, and more user friendly
- Added a currently hidden feature to use memcached or MMCache/ZPS/eAccelerator shared memory.
Thank you for your continued support,
The Simple Machines Team

Are these changes going to change the documentation that has been written?
Awesome :) It's good to know that 1.1 is drawing nearer.. *Checks with parents about becoming a charter member*
Congratulations to everyone who has worked on SMF. I look forward to this release, are there any known bugs with the beta or is just for error checking?
Very cool, thanks for all your hard work!
If you can test this version :D - there are worlds between 1.0.3. SMF 1.1 rulez...
I use it for weeks now as a test board...
Well if I have time I will enjoy playing about with 1.1 beta
I purcashed a charter membership today and I'm very glad- this new version is a great improvement on the last :) Thanks for all the hard work SM :)

Probably quite a number of bugs although nothing major, a few people have been running the cvs builts for the last few months without major problems.
Just a simple question so I can be prepared for the final release.
Will 1.1 be completely compatible with 1.0.3? If not what will be the possible problems should we look for when the 1.1 upgrade is released?
Of course, an upgrade script will be provided, and indeed already is.
Generally, on "major" updates such as 1.1, themes and mods will need to be edited/redone to make them compatible.
I've just noticed on here, the recent posts isn't limited to one page any more!! I've been waiting ages for that to be included, thanks. :) Just out of interest, is it limited to 10 pages, or will it be a setting we can change? :)
One day ill probably be a charter member. Im glad to see the working habbit of the SMF team.

It may be a setting later, but every page farther you go, the more inefficient and server killing it gets.

Oh my...
I just downloaded it.. :)
Guess i'll have a lot of work with spanish translation :P
Is this new release compatible with the current Helios theme?

I haven't tested it yet...but I looked at the new template files yesterday, and can say that changes are probably needed. I noticed several javascript updates, and some new/changed variables at least.
I Shall have to remember to become a charter member when I have a spare few pounds!
I am happy to see 1.1 beta 1 is released. I am looking foward to a public release. :)
To see a list of all the improvements made is great.
Someday I really need to get myself a Charter Membership. :)

I thought I'd just give it a shot and see what would happen. So far so good from what I can tell.

Indeed. ;D It seem to work fine..but I still think some code is needed to be in...there might be things that just are not present.
But great that it actually works!
I'd be interesting in having a setting too :)
I think I'm right in saying this. The update alters the database in such a way that you can't go back once you've installed it....
Can't wait to test it out! *Downloads*
Awaiting for a nice BLOG Modules...
please...
I am a new charter member and haven't received the smf 1.1 beta 1 release.

You already can using SSI.php.
can i report bugs here?
when i click on a members profile, it shows me the green "online" image. after i clicked "add to buddy list". the image(s) are gone
I think I found a bug as well.
When previewing a post, the preview shows up above the compose area and shows it all. But, if I continue to type more and hit the preview button again, it only shows parts of the preview, depending upon the size of the post. If it's a small enough post, it will show the whole thing, but if it gets long enough. It will only show a part of the preview and not the whole. I have to scroll up to see the whole thing.
Actually, it only does this if I don't have the edge of the preview area at the top of the window. That is, if a post is long enough that I need to scroll down to see the compose area, it won't, when I hit the preview button, show the whole post. It only shows the part that I can see when I was making the post.
I don't know if it is a bug or not. Just wanted to mention that, in case.
Just curious, are you guys Charter Members? cause I don't see the badge, so how did you get a copy of 1.1 Beta 1? And if you're CMs, then it'd probably be better to report bugs in the CM board. Sorry if I misunderstood.
I'm not a Charter Member. I just noticed that while making posts here on these forums.
TarantinoArchives and anun: I think you are posting about bugs in 1.0.3 in the 1.1 Beta 1 thread. Please confirm the version you are using.
I'm ONLY noticing this when using these forums, the Simple Machines forums (this right here) which, of course, is 1.1 Beta 1.
My forums aren't set up right now and I'm not using any other SMF powered forums, so the only SMF forums I'm using is this Simple Machines Community Forum.
Bug reports go there http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=60.0

Heh, had not thought of that. Like I said, sorry for misunderstanding. Like Owdy said, that'd be a better place to report a bug. :)
Hey, when do you think the final version of the hole SMF forum will release?

I belive that was 30.12.04.
SMF 1.0 Final (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=20982.0) ;)
anything new in SMF 1.1 Beta 1+? ;)
From what I saw last night, a fix for BBCode overloads.
All I know is that I paid my Charter cash.. And the ware is an OUTSTANDING improvment over the free versions.. I've used the free versions for over 90 days, and that is my 'pay' time frame.. OUSTANDING software..
Now, for themes. :D
Which ones are compatible?? The ones that take the mods that is, without having to hack the scripts like most mods do for the free versions, and themes. . LOL!! I do not mind debugging code when it's free mind you.. LOL!!
i.e. The 'warning' mod.. works with default theme aok.. If i install helios will the mod follow? or will i have to hand hack the scripts still?
My question is this.. Is there a Charter member themes respository that has tested, and proved themes?
Also, where is the 'email members' in the admin panel?
Thanks a ton
Thanks..
Me
Well, the themes and mods take a bit more time to get updated for new versions by their authors, specially CM-only releases cause less authors have access to them. Eventually they get updated and you're ready to install with the Package Manager without touching the code. On mods working with themes, that's harder cause themes have their own peculiarities that the mod writer either can't or won't work out for each theme available, but the changes required in themes are usually not a big deal. HIH.
Thanks for the input... Outstanding software, and I HIGHLY recommend it to all that will listen.
nice, i think now would be a good time for me to register for that paypal account and put a link on my site, Donate to by me a charter membership so we can use SMF 1.1 beta 1, lol
Just became a Charter Member and installed 1.1 plus the Dutch language files in about 5 minutes. Brilliant stuff
Regards,
Eddy
I also became a charter member and installed it, 1.1 Beta 1 looks sweet.

Look for 'Newsletters'
I'm anxious for SMF to come to Non-Charter members.
It isnt just for charter members, everyone can get SMF.
Yeah, you can get SMF even as a non-Charter Member, its just 1.1 Beta 1 that's for charter members.
Hi
when I directly go to 1.1
Will the converter scripts still work?
I need to switch over server and board..tested it with 1.03 seems to work, not 100% but mostly, but cause I wont upgrade twice, a direct move to 1.1 could be the better way...if it is possible
Themes wont work if I understand correctly
Is there a special area for 1.1 non-forum files?
Why not upgrade?
Switch to SMF 1.0.3 and it will be an SMF easy to use, even maybe package manager script to upgrade, it wont be a convert and the converter scripts will be updated if needed.
I know SMF is for everyone but I meant I'm anxious for SMF 1.1 to come to Non-Charter members.
It will, Its just given to them as its a beta, still not good enough for large scale use, so its limited.

Not exactly. CM's get betas before anyone else, because they are cm's. ;)

And because it's easier to support a small number of users running it, 1000's of people reporting the same bugs would be a nightmare.
I miss the option "count child board messages on boardindex" in the list, is this right?
That is included in 1.1, yes.
I am running SMF 1.03 with Greek as default language with options for English, French, German and Italian.
I just sent a subscription for charter membership because
- SMF is very good and I think I must give at least a subscription.
- I want more quick responce to my questions (I had immediate responce when I had real problems, now I am just fine tuning it and the priorities are well understood).
- The refinements of 1.1 seem to fulfill many of my requests.
Is it safe to upgrade to 1.1 as there is no 1.1 Greek translation yet?
Also will my themes work OK?
Regards
Agridoc
Most themes should work fine, although they'll lack whatever new features available for them in that version, like an interface to search inside a topic, for example. Some themes may need a little updating.
It may not be yet good enough for a live website, although I believe there's some using it like that, it's just that it's still beta after all, and new things are being found and fixed, so it's not as stable as 1.0.3, but good enough. I'll let other people already using 1.1 to answer this question better.
Thank you for joining the Charter Member program! :D
I use it at my website, and it seems to work ok. Also with all my themes there - which are not converted to 1.1 yet. I do get some error messages though, and of course the themes that use a lot of templates won't show all options. The errors are mainly about language strings that have changed/missing. No big deal, but if you rather not, its of course an issue.
But all in all it works fine. (added the fact that I also run the portal mod there, which itself is beta. ;) )
Just to keep everyone updated, we have now released SMF 1.1 Beta 2 to Charter Members for testing. This release mainly addresses issues found in Beta 1, as well as adding some additional functionality.
