Simple Machines is proud to announce the release of SMF 2.0 RC2 Public. This is the long awaited second Release Candidate for 2.0 and is one of the last steps towards 2.0 going gold. Literally hundreds of bugs that were reported after the release of RC1 have been fixed and improvements have been made to security, stability, and performance. We recommend that all users of earlier development versions upgrade as soon as possible.
As promised, 2.0 RC2 boasts our new Curve theme, which has been made the new default theme. The previous default theme has been renamed Core. Please note that the Classic and Babylon themes have been removed from the package and are now only available on the theme site.
Major changes since the last public release:
- Inclusion of the Curve theme.
- Three brand-new smiley sets.
- 960 new entries in the changelog, which consist of:
- Fixes for a significant number of bugs reported by Beta Testers, Charter members, and community members.
- Hundreds of queries optimized for faster performance (new indexes, re-written queries, changes to column type, etc)
- Canonical link support for better search engine indexing
- New feature: ability to have different readmes in packages for different languages
- New feature: ability to delete languages (oops! we forgot that earlier)
- Linktrees have been added to the lower-areas of the forum and to the admin, moderation and profile sections.
- Lighttpd support for Queryless urls
- Improved support for right to left languages
- OpenID is fixed
- Extra fields for Advanced Profile fields (surround/enclose within other text, and choose placement as icon or signature).
- Several theme improvements for better semantics and standards support.
- Moved more JS out of templates
- Wireless links to switch back to normal mode.
Those interested in the detailed changelog may like to download it on our download page.
Finally - please do not use this topic for any support requests. You will get a much more prompt response by visiting the relevant support board!
Regards,
Simple Machines

Awesome 2.0 RC2 ... :)
Very nice!
I think this is my first post regarding SMF 2.0
I've waited patiently and must say, i'm impressed. It took me 6 minutes to upgrade via FTP.
Thank you SMF for all you do and what you've done. You guys rock!
When are you releasing SMF 2.0 RC2-1?
lol :P

It is a typical release candidate upgrade. You cannot just use a patch. Patches will be available once 2.0 Final is released but not before.

Congratulations and thanks for the release.
Great News...
congrats.. :)
Great to see, especially since I'm off the next two days... That will give me time to get SMF+G2 upgraded to work with 2.0 RC2, and test out other packages in preparation for upgrading my Archie site to 2.0 RC2 :D
Great job to everyone on the team! :)

Thanks SMF Developers!
Yeah baby, finally! Congratulations to all and the team on this long awaited RC!
Thats why Arantor wanted to give some of his mods away, he didn't want to go through the updating process :p
So far the only ones to update their mods are Arantor and vbgamer45. Way to stay on top guys. :)
Oi! Wotcha mean "only ones"? :P
ETA: Meh, got one minor change I have to make to one of them.

Actually, all of the mods I was giving away already worked fine in RC2 Charter release... though there were more than a few changes for RC2 public, which I didn't factor in...
A number of them do have proper RC2 support now though, and I'm hoping to get nearly all of them up straight before I go to bed.
Try to keep the mods up to date heh still have some mods that support 1.0.x
Also please if you have a digg account we can use some more diggs/comments
Where do i get this from ?

thanks Arantor rex, just a question,i already have SMF 2.0 RC1.2,do i have to do the same process as i did when i updated from 1.1.10 to SMF 2.0 RC1.2 ?
i have a question will smf 1.1.10 be updatable to smf 2.0 when the final is out? if so will it be easy as i have a lot of mods
It will be updatable (it is now, in fact). But you will have to get updated versions of the mods and your theme because almost every 1.1.x mod will need rewriting for 2.0.
Just pure Awesomeness!!!!!!
so for someone like me with MANY mods updating (ever?) to 2.x is out of the question especially since most where done manually :(
That's the great thing: most mods run smoother in 2.0. A LOT smoother in most cases; very rarely have to do a theme edit at all for many mod installations in 2.0 and it can install to non-default themes too, out of the box.
For instance if you want to edit the main menu; that's no longer index.template.php, but it's held in Subs.php instead, so it's globally available to all themes.
Have a look to see if your mods have been updated to 2.0 first. Many of them have - though it's still very early for RC2 as it's only just out.
BINGO!!
Unlimited Kisses for Simplemachines Team and every one who put their effort in making SMF 2.0 RC2
Thanks i was waiting for this since long long time :-*
Awesome! Congrats team!

With RC 1.2, just download the small update package and upload all of the files and folder in it. select yes to overwrite any existing files. then browse to your forum url/upgrade.php.
Kratos
Updating from RC1.2 to RC2 is as king kratos states, you upload the large upgrade package over the top of the older files.
so how would someone (with lots of mods) update 1.1.10 to this?

Wootcakes!
Great, now we can start to release some themes for 2.0 RC2. We will have a surprise for you.
I love SMF. I think it is the best forum software now. I claim that people do not need a paid forum software to get the features of SMF.
Just support this beautiful script, and thank to the Developers. What can I say more?
Oh, yeah, I have just remembered. Do we Charters need to anything? There is no change between the Charters' release and public right?

It is supposed to be large upgrade package, this release has a lot of changes to be valid for small update package.

The large upgrade package will remove all your mods, although if you want to re-install them make sure they are 2.0 RC2(Not even some RC 1.2 mods work with RC 2) compatible or they have a 2.0 RC 2 version somewhere.
and what will the small update one do?
He says small upgrade, it should be the large upgrade.
You normally only use the small upgrade for small release changes (e.g. 1.1.9 to 1.1.10). This is a much, much bigger change.
don't want to update if i lose my mods lol
what BIG changes are there?
Apart from the new theme which rewrites just about every single .template.php file, there are NUMEROUS other changes in the code.
I would suggest you look at the mod site in the coming days; many of the mods you have probably already have a RC1.2 version handy and will likely get an RC2 version soon enough.

There is a large number of changes from the charter version to the public version mainly bug fixes. You would need to upgrade to the latest version.
Well done! Congratulations and surely jubilations too!

If you don't want to loose them, then you should not update to 2.0. From 1.1.10, 2.0 has numerous changes. Here are some, better internal code, a lot of optimizations, warning system, paid subscriptions, a whole new default theme called Curve, custom profile fields, better spam protection, an overall better admin center, plus a lot of minor improvements.

It appears that there may be some issues with the small update package. I was just looking at the downloads site and it is kind of confusing because the small update package says that you use it if you ARE running Version 2.0 RC 1.2 and the large upgrade package says that you use it if you have modifications or ARE NOT running Version 2.0 RC 1.2. (see my screenshot).
Earlier I had apologized for making an incorrect statement about which package to use, but as I look at the download page, I believe that I made the correct statement based off the information provided on the download page. It may be a good idea to fix the download page, or at least make it less confusing.
Edit, I apparently am not allowed to post my screenshot to show what the download page is showing regarding which package to use. But, if you just go there, you will see what I mean.

First, by "stuffed" what do you mean? Do you mean your forum is absolutely dead and nonfunctional at all, or that it is functional, but just missing certain elements (such as design, language strings, mods, etc)?
Second, did you make a backup of your files and database before trying to update/upgrade?
Third, which package did you actually end up using: small or large?
Kratos
Please post support issues in the support board. Posting here is a good way to get your issue lost in the posts.

Please note that the Classic and Babylon themes have been removed from the package and are now only available on the theme site.
They are in upgrade package.
That's because anyone upgrading (as opposed to installing) will probably have classic and babylon installed on their site (and may be using them).
Wooot :D Thanks for this release :D
Thanks, Guys and Gals. ;D

Well done Team!
Amazing amount of work went into getting 2.0 to here.
I just received an announcement through email. My current forum does not show the option to automatically upgrade to RC2. Current version is 1.1.10
Good job Smf Team. Congratulations!.. ;)
Great Job!

You are on the 1.1.X branch, it will only recommend updates to that "line" so the next upgrade you will see will be 1.1.11 if/when we do one.
You can upgrade to SMF 2.0 RC2, by using the large upgrade package on the downloads section http://download.simplemachines.org/
Please keep in mind this will break all modifications and themes, SMF 2.0 has had some major work done to its core.
When we have first 2.1 beta? ;D

Will there be an upgrade option when 2 goes gold that will not break the mods?
Also when 2 goes gold will support for 1.1 end?
The only key upgrade i an concerned about in upgrading from 1 to 2 is SimplePorta will that break?

No. The codebase is completely different, so this will not be possible.

No, I don't believe so - We do still support 1.0 even ;)

Upgrading from one branch to another will completely remove all your mods. So yes.
Yay! I think curve may speed up my time porting from default (well, the new curve theme) to my stuff sinecure the css makes a lot more sense now
I'm in love ,,, and celebrated by making a Christmas theme for vgmasters lol <3

Now!! :D
Well, 2.0 RC2 -> Final "should" hopefully be relatively minor changes, so upgrading to 2.0 RC2 wouldn't hurt you, just that for the immediate short term there is a shortage of mods and themes as folks get them updated.

That would greatly depend on you. How keen are you to be upgrading perhaps multiple times before gold?
If you don't want to go through the upgrade more than once, then perhaps you should wait.
If you are willing to do that, just to get to 2.0 faster - then go ahead :) It is very stable already.
Plus there's a ton of nice features in 2.0 that aren't in 1.1.x.
Woohoo! Good job guys!

Good news but what happens now? When 2.0 drops, should those of us running 1.10 upgrade to 2.0 or do we continue to run behind with support? Also, is there an upgrade path for those of us running 1.10 to 2.0 currently or are we talking about dumping mysql, new installation and import of mysql?
Not a support question, just a question.

1.1.10 is still being supported and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

It is a typical release candidate upgrade. You cannot just use a patch. Patches will be available once 2.0 Final is released but not before.
Guess I'll wait for the 2.0 final then - got to the stage I can't be bothered faffing about with FTP for upgrades (including for mods). Besides RC1.2 is working fine for me.
Sorry guys, but it's the truth of it - to many sites and not enough hours in the day.

That's what I said ;) My problem with it is that it's not connected to the birth date field that's already in the profile. This would just add an extraneous field and is a temporary fix at best.
I've requested it before, in the feature suggestions IIRC.

Ah, my bad, chalk that one up to my not understanding the full request from what was said; very hard to get it right all the time.
OMG
Love it
"Please note that the Classic and Babylon themes have been removed from the package and are now only available on the theme site."
I always wonder at programmers who remove perfectly good, well tested and working code from programs. Kinda like jumping from a perfectly good airplane and then discarding the parachute.
And since I happen to LIKE the Classic theme, I will now need to (1) find someone who supplies it and (2) attempt to install their package and (3) hope like hell that it works properly. The other alternative (and a very probable one) is staying with what I have.
So sad--and so unnecessary. :(
It's in the 2.0 RC2 Upgrade package for those who already use it.
It is on our theme site however if you wish to go get it.
The reason it was dropped, apart from that it would then ship with 4 themes instead of 2, is that it's actually a lot more work to keep them up to date, plus you don't get most of the benefits of things like theme installation that you do with the other themes. We also can't keep every single theme in the history of SMF on it; if we did, by the time we got to SMF 3, we'd likely end up with 5 in the package, 6 or 7 for SMF 4 and so on and so on.
We don't have the resources to endlessly keep these up to date either; remember the core of those themes is 3 years old, already had changes for 2.0 RC1 and with 2.0 RC2 the changes were not small to make them continue to work properly.
Just finished the upgrade. Everything worked ok. Thanks for the upgrade.
What the heck do you mean dennisw? The themes are provided BY SMF on the SMF theme site. What's wrong with making the package smaller? You have to consider the little guys too on dial-up modems. When they have to upload a package that contains thousands of files because it packs 4 themes, do you know how long it would take them? It would take them HOURS! Why not cut something out that isn't necessary for SMF users, and make it available to everyone who wants it?
Awesome, thank you very much! 8)
Great job.
I especially like this new theme, i hope it will be avaible in SMF 2.0 final package?
:)
Really looking forward to this. I think this is a great step for SMF2, all designers around the world can now start to work with curve :D

Just upgraded my forum: works great!
And THANK YOU for implementing my suggestion to use the strings of the english language files, when there is no available string in the standard language. Finally I don't have to copy the contents of english language files into the german language files to use some mods!
Thanks SMF. This is great news.
How do I upgrade my forum with this new verison?
Please see: Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)
Note that you will have to find a new theme in most cases and many mods have not yet been updated.
Just finished installing the new Release Candidate! Thanks for the update guys, liking the new theme and I do see some speed improvements with MySQL.
That's great news !! congrats guys !!
Just read through this thread and hope I didn't miss it, but I'll risk asking: I'm sure 2.0 adds additional tables than currently exist in 1.1.10, but does it also rename or do away with any of the existing 1.1.10 tables? I'm hoping to attempt a "smooth move" when the time comes (first, with some test site experimentation and mod re-vamping and some overnight sleight of hand) but I'm hoping to avoid any last minute surprises by asking about the tables.
:)
IIRC, it adds 22 new tables and rewrites the structure of the remaining ones - every table will become altered to some degree.
It will manage the changes it needs to make itself, though it can't deal with any tables mods have added.
Great Job!! I can't wait to get this version running, after I update some mods that is.
This is the most delicious news I've heard in a LONG time!! Good job! =)

Ah.... I'd better head on over to my 1.1.10 test site, then, and try out the upgrade to see what the magic word is to get back in. These things are good to know, ahead of time. :D
Just to clarify, there are three levels of 'maintenance'. 0 = no maintenance, 1 = forum in maintenance mode that you select, 2 = full lockdown.
When the update begins, it's dropped into level 2 so that nothing outside the upgrade process can do anything. When it completes successfully, it's returned to level 0 as normal.

OK, just put my money where my mouth is and doanted. Thanks agian.
Great to see that this is finally out. I've been checking the site every other day to see if there were any news, rumors or anything on the public release or on how the Charter member RC was doing.
I've been really lazy and not updated my 2.0 Beta 4 to RC1... since I always though this one was around the corner and I'll have to redo all the Icelandic translations(since they are all crap anyway) and theme modifications and stuff like that over again when I update....
I was not keen on updating to RC1 if RC2 was coming shortly after :) But boy, are your release cycles long.
Anyway. Awesome job on the release. I'm looking forward to testing the deployment on my staging server and I'm sure my userbase is looking forward to getting rid of the most annoying bugs.
The Add a Ban page is totally screwed, I couldn't find an appropriate board to tell you but look at it, it looks awful. :S

You can use the Large Upgrade package for that, though you'll lose all your mods and themes. (Though you'll have that problem anyway moving to 2.0 unless they've all been updated)
Wow, already 15 pages of RC2 mods... you guys (SMF team and the modders) truly do rock! :D
The modders have had time to get it all together, though I know a fair amount of that is smiley and avatar packs.
I think 2 pages of that is mine, either ones I've written and still hold credit on, or ones I've given away - but it's been an awesome effort all round - and will get better as time goes on.
Great thanks it´s a nice work.

It's too bad you converted to vBulletin. RC2 is awesome! The curve theme is very nice and the added features are quite useful.
Kratos
Awesome work fellows!!! I've been waiting to see this for some time. I maintain a site that has been using vBulletin for 10 years now, and I am seriously considering switching to SMF.
That's really good news and thank you all very much :)
Can we use the same templates which are compatible for 2.0 RC1.2 ?
I have just one word for RC2: Awesome!!
it's SMF 2 RC 2, and i helped ;D
congratulations...

No.
And to explain Antechinus' answer, it's because of the way the theme structure is set up due to the Curve theme that makes all themes supporting previous versions of SMF 2.0 will NOT support SMF 2.0 RC2.
curious over one thing.
because there is alot of people using 1.1.10 do we have to upgrade to the new one?
Is there away of doing an upgrade like smf does through the admin by clicking on the
link update so it can be done automaticly..
You don't have to upgrade if you don't want to. It's completely optional.
There is no way of doing it automatically through the package manager. The only way is to upload a complete set of files as discussed in: Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)
Even if there were some automatic way of doing it, it'd still basically replace every file anyway, still removing all your mods and themes because they all need to be reworked and upgraded to work on 2.0 RC2.
thanks for clearing this up for me and also thanks for the quick response arantor
After a few issues with a hacker even on 1.1.10, i went ahead and did the upgrade to 2.0 RC2....all i can say is awesome.
Love it.
Thanks SMF team.
sorry coz i dont have more time to read and coz my english is very very very bad.
i'm to short. when gold is out?
tnx for asking, bb gd work.
this board is the best.
Gold will be out when it's done; this is one step closer to it.
Does this new released 2.0 version now have the ability to upgrade through the packages in the adm. panel???
Not yet, because it is not a stable release yet.

Yes and No. The functionality is there, but updates for package manager will only be released after 2.0 goes final.
Like always with RC versions.
If I delete all the old 1.10 files from my forum (the database is intact and backed-up) and run a fresh SMF 2.0 RC2 instead of upgrading the old forum script, will all the data in the forum still be intact?
I mean the postings.
Thanks
Don't try it that way, just get the large upgrade and use it to _replace_ all files, and run the upgrade.php
The install will not be able to change your database correctly, and it will most probably end up either breaking it, or you having a fresh empty 2.0 installation with none of the old data available.

Okay,thanks.
Oh, just to make this clear - I just realised that could be misunderstood.
So what I meant to say, the ability is there - but you can never update RC versions through the package manager.
So package updates will only be available for 2.0 final and beyond.

If you want to start with all new files, do the following:
- Make a full backup including both database and files
- Delete all files except any attachments uploaded, and the Settings.php file.
- Upload the contents of the install package, taking care to not overwrite Settings.php. Do not upload the install.php file or the .sql files from this package.
- Grab the upgrade.php and .sql files from the upgrade package, and upload them to the main SMF directory.
- Browse to upgrade.php to complete the upgrade.
- Make sure that the upgrade.php file and .sql files have been deleted.
Thanks for your support.
Why I asked whether I can upload SMF 2.0 RC2 installer on old forum after backing the database and forum files up is that my forum GurusForum.com was transferred from old hosting account to a more robust account.
However, I noticed that whenever I logon to the site using Mozilla Firefox, it will not show the theme very well. It will also display this error message: "The default theme's directory is wrong, please correct it by clicking this text".
I tried to upgrade but it's proving difficult. So, I have decided to see if it's possible to either restore the old SMF 1.10 or upload the latest release and still have all my posts intact.
Is there any thing I can do to restore this problem?
Thanks
Try using the repair_settings.php (http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=repair_settings.php) tool! :)
You only have to uplod it to your forum directory and then visit the file with your browser!
Thanks for that repair script.
I was able to use it to repair the directory structure before deleting it.
At least, the forum has gone back to it default theme. I can now upload fresh theme or upgrade to 2.0 RC2.
I'm grateful!
:)
Thanks SMF buddies.
My forum is now running on SMF 2.0 RC2
You are all great!
However, how can I make the forum to start sending emails to the members?
For example, if someone check on "Notify me of replies", my forum doesn't send email again the member who made the post.
It started after the transfer from one host to another hosting account. Is there anyting I did wrong? How can I rectify this problem?
Thanks
GurusForum.com, Make a new topic in the support board.
Thanks. I will.
Another great acomplishment from us.
weldone team
Wery nice :D Congrad :P
very nice, congrats to the release. :)
This is great!
My forum is working perfectly now with this new release.
Keep it up guys!
Nice. I'm getting mine now. BTW. It's good to be back!
sorry for possible noob questions .. i admit i didn't read all 15 pages, therefore be kind to me :)
- Where can i download original language file so i can begin with translation?
- any release dates of 2.0?
Thank you very much!

Upgrade went smoothly took about 4 hours :-)
4 hours to upgrade?
That's too much.
Not really if you have a heavily customised theme with a lot of mods.
When I get round to the site upgrade I'm planning, I'm allowing 16 hours to do all the necessary work on it given the level of customisation and recoding of mods to support 2.0 RC2.
I mean ordinary upgrade with no mods and customization.
It didn't even take 4 hours to upgrade this site :o. The main upgrade was finished in less than an hour. I did spend a good deal of time after that working on the site and other bugs though.

Thanks for making things clear Sleepy.
I apologize if this has been asked already ...
Is there any plans to have built in "pretty urls" in SMF 2.0 final?
Not other than the in built "queryless" style.
So called pretty URLs do not work so well on all configurations (the built in 'queryless' is slightly better supported) and they have little or no actual SEO benefit, plus they do add a performance hit to the server.
There are multiple mods however should you wish to have this functionality, but I cannot see it ever being a core feature.
Ok, thank you
Great work guys ;D
Hi, tnx for my first question.
This is my 2nd:
If i'll install this release, it is upgradable to 2.0 gold?
Tnx again!
John Karlson
All releases are upgradeable one way or another. But any and all releases prior to 2.0 gold will remove your existing mods; we don't ever produce mini update packs from one release candidate to the next, so RC3 (if we have one) will replace all the files in your install, as will 2.0 final.
Hello.
My first replay. I like SMF RC1.2. more than IPB with 7 years experience of administration of IPB. I did try to upgrade to RC2 from RC1.2, but have a problem with UTF8, most tables was changed to 1251, but I didn't chose that. Its was before UTF8. I step back to RC1.2 thinking may be after a few months we will have more statistics and found way to make upgrade to next release without bugs like I have described before. Any way GREAT JOB! I'll donate for that release! :) Thank You! :)

Welcome to SMF
I suggest you make a topic in the support boards with all the relevant data. This sounds like it may be a problem that is isolated to your install

Could clarify the above please? I'm currently running 2.0 rc2 and have a handful of compatible mods installed. Are you saying when 2.0 final is released that my current mods will be gone as they were in the upgrade from 1.10 to 2.0?
Yes, just as users from 2.0 RC1.2 who upgraded to 2.0 RC2 found.
We do not issue package manager updates for only the changes between release candidates.
I've got a spreadsheet going where I'm tracking the status of RC2 compatibility for all my (80+) mods, organized by importance. This upgrade is going to be a massive undertaking for me.
Is there any sense of the probability of an RC3 before final? 25%? 50%? 75%?
Given the number of issues discovered in RC2, I would think (though I'm not one of the devs, I don't know for sure) that an RC3 is very likely, if not definite, prior to 2.0 final.
Congratualtions on your new SM version release!! ;D 8)
Currently I am running SMF 1.1.10 on my site (****.net/forum) and want to upgrade it to 2.0 version.
Now, please advise me how to do it. I tried it myself, looked for all options in my admin tab, and couldn't figure that out. Do I have to download it, and then install it manually, or is there system that automatically upgrades to my website forum?? What will happen to my existing one? I do not want to lose all boards and posts I have.
Thanks for your help.
Many more success,
ArgueNow forum administrator,
Universon
Upgrading between major releases (1.1 to 2.0 for example) must be handled manually. Also, pre-release versions must also be upgraded manually.
From our online manual: Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0)

It's only been just over two weeks since this topic opened, and it's been mostly support issue free, which is why we haven't locked it yet.
well i put mine in a test forum and registered the admins to it so they can become aquainted with the changes in the back room there...lol
This way when the final full vrsion is done and ready they will have a bit of a clue is they want to go to it or stay with 1.10 and then we have the themes too, I have tried several of the ones that say they are for this version but for some odd reson they did not behave...had to remove then.
again thanks for all your hard work with the software and all the tech support given to all of us when needed.
have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
¿SMF 2.0 Release Candidate 2 ROCKS! Curve theme looks very good, I am testing it.
I will wait to the realise to update my forums, thanks a lot you all are making a great job.
Pd: sorry for my worse english ;D
Thank you! Great release candidate, works well and better!
Yes... great release. Been hard at work modding my forum the past few days and it looks and works great. Thank you guys!!
QuoteNew feature: ability to have different readmes in packages for different languages
Is there any instruction how mod authors can use it?
All over in the code boards.
what's the approx date when we can expect SMF 2.0 final version to release ?
Approximately? After Christmas and before the Christmas after that.
The only issue is, most of the mods have not yet converted there mods to SMF 2.0 RC2 compatible.
