Title: Forum 'Crashed' after installing Mod.
Post by: Ronald_1938 on January 08, 2010, 03:36:06 PM
I installed the Mod. Aeva Media through the ACP. It went in with no problems.. But the forum crashed.

I have 'no access' to the forum at all. Just a blank page.

How can I remove this in the cPanel, and get the forum back..

Thanks for any help..

Are you sure it's because of AEVA?

If so, I'm afraid you're going to have to reverse these edits:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=977

Unless you want to just upload a fresh set of directories, which would also uninstall any themes/mods you have installed.

Has to be Aeva Media, the forum was running fine until I download the mod and installed it.. Then it would not Redirect  or go back or do anything.. it was like it was froze in time.

Now I can not see or get to the forum. I do not know enough about making any changes in the cPanel or using the FTP. So I do need some kind of help.

Thanks..

Try viewing the source of your forum (Internet Explorer: Ctrl+F3; FireFox: Ctrl+U;). Then copy and paste that code here... Just want to see if NOTHING is loading or if some things are loading and just aren't displaying correctly.

In your Packages directory, you'll find another directory named "Backups". In there, look for an archive named something like "2009-01-01_before_AEVA.tar.gz.

Download that file, dearchive it and upload the contents, overwriting what's there, now.

Voila! Mod removed.  :)

This is a very useful feature in SMF, I would highly suggest trying this first and seeing if your forum comes back up.

There really ought to be a doc, on that.

Maybe I ought to write one...

I would really have to agree with that. Probably a sub-section under Package Manager.

I found the 'Backup' and found the file. Clicked on and clicked 'download'...BUT I don't know how to 'dearchive' it.. But then I did install the mod back over the existing mod..

Tell me how to dearchive this file

The forum never came back!

Thanks..

You will need to download a program to unzip it, as far as I know, the stock Windows extraction tool doesn't do .tar or .gz. I suggest downloading 7-Zip. I think its the best extraction tool.

I download the 7-zip. Unzipped the file to archive..

Now I'm kind of lost as to what to do next..

This is all new to me.. I normally have someone doing this for me..

Did oldcrow get sorted?

If not ask here for support

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=50.0

I never use mods myself in case something goes wrong  ::)

There are two archives, really, Oldcrow. First, you have to dearchive the gz file, then the resulting tar file.

It's a Linux thing. ;)

If you really can't figure it, PM me your ftp login details, including the ftp address for your site, and I'll sort you out, if you like.

Be aware of this, though: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=228940.0

OK.

I'll get on it as soon as I can.

In the meantime, can you take a backup, just in case?

Ta!

Yuk.

Looks like the mod didn't, actually, install, properly.  :(

There's still a load of stuff about AEVA in your temp directory and the backup only contains index.php.

This could involve a bit of hard work.

You didn't do the sensible thing and backup, before you installed the mod, did you?

Right...

You'll be happy to know that you have a forum!

Looks like subs.php got screwed, somehow.

Backup everything, before you do much else.

Use the forum for a while and see if anything seems weird.

If much else pops up, it might be best to get the SMF install package and upload everything, again, EXCEPT Settings.php

You really don't want to overwrite that, trust me. :)

That'll mean that most of your mods, if not all, won't work, so you'll have to reinstall them.

I know it's a pain, but back things up, before you install a mod. It really IS the best way. ;)

Thanks Kat.. I really appreciate your expertise and help in doing this for me..I see the forum is up and looks the same..

I was checking in the ACP and there are a few errors showing up when I click on one of the programs..

Yep. Replacing that file screwed up Simple Portal.  :(

It's got to be best to do as I said and upload all the files, overwriting what's there, now. :(

NOT Settings.php, though.

That'll give you a clean forum, with no mods.

The mods'll be in Packages, though, so you can reinstall them.

Can you do that easily enough?

I'm not at home, at the moment, I'm using my laptop. So, to do it from here's gonna take forever.

If it's not something you can do, let me know and I'll get on it as soon as I can, when I get back.

OK. Files replaced.

I've made a post in the admin board, on your site.

Everything seems OK, to me, now.

I notice that you have quite a few themes. You realise, do you, that most mods will require manual editing, to get them to work with most custom themes?

I also noticed a few files were missing. I saw "Fantastico". That could be why.

Also, you might want to get into FTP, mate. Working on a website is SOOOOOOOOO much easier, that way. ;)

Next thing to do, is sort out the mods. Some might still work OK, but I doubt many will, I'm afraid.

Yes running good now.

Themes have been removed.

Correct

Will do my best to learn the FTP, its confusing to me..

I have removed them all, reinstalled one by one. Ones that errored I deleted.

I'd like to thank you Kat for doing this work for me. I surely appreciated this.

Thanks Ron..
PS.. I did a backup also before I started..
