Summary

Want your forum to snow? The much awaited Project Snow 1.1 is finally here!

Very powerfully coded from the ground up, allowing you to change settings such as snow color, snow character, snowflake width and height, or even let your users toggle their snow on or off! Want to only have it snow in December or January? You can pick which month or months you want it to snow in! And it will only snow in the months you checked. Along with MANY more settings to give you complete control over your forums snow!

Want the snow to JUST fall in the forums background, so it's not in the way of everything else? Well, you now can! Using the CSS z-index setting, simply set it to -5!

How about making the snow a different color? You can enter a hex color (ie. #ffdd00) or a primary color name (ie. yellow)! Just make sure you warn your members NOT to eat the snow, if it's yellow!

Here are some of the features...
General Features
Settings
Advanced Settings
Month Settings

Help us make it snow in other countries and provide us with translations!
We will wrap your translations with "// SMF Modders; Project Snow - // End SMF Modders; Project Snow" and put your name in the readme!

Original snowstorm.js script written by Scott Schiller (http://schillmania.com)

Project Snow is and has always been free. Help keep it that way and support the developers financially by donating any amount!
We have put a lot of time and energy into Project Snow 1.1, as well as our other mods and appreciate donations to their development going.

And finally, we want to thank all of the Project Snow supporters and everyone who has downloaded it! :)

No. All this mod does is add a .js file that makes it snow on your forum. To disable it, just uninstall the mod ;)

Thank you everyone.

Sorry for the late release, I was planning on having it released before Christmas but I had to go on vacation and release was delayed so again my apologies.

Regarding toggle off/on for the next version, not only do I plan on adding toggle on/off I plan on adding full control via admin panel for all of the options related to the .js file.

This is also in the plans for a future mod release "Forum Weather Mod" which I am working on with Sangwe11 who is going to be coding the JavaScript and iKorp who will be working on development of the mod itself with me.

Future development will include time based, time of day based, date based and on/off toggle.

And automatic setting according to the time
For example:

0:00-07:00 Rain
07:00-12:00 snow etc.

Awesome, time of day based, which would be awesome if you created a theme with it which change automatically darker in the background when it's nite time.

There is already a 2.0 Theme that changes the background based on the time of day. I will not be creating 2.0 Themes any time soon because I do not have Photoshop for editing the images right now.

How can i make the snowflakes bigger?
I'd like the size of a smilie, but if i chage the flakeWith and flakeHeight, they don't actually grow.

Thaks for the great mod  ;)

I modified the snowstorm.js.

The parameters flakeWith and flakeHeight, which were 8 pixel on default, I set them so 18, 50 and 100 pixel, but I dind't see a difference.

As stated in the readme's and descriptions I personally did not write the JavaScript, but what you encountered I confirmed.

The only way you can get a change, would be to change it to 0, which makes them disappear, meaning there is a max height/width.
I will contact the script author and do more digging in the code, expect this to change by the next version which will have Admin inputs controlling the settings instead of having to edit the raw Javascript.

Thank you for reporting this,
Labradoodle-360

Any requests on controls that should be added?

That's great news, Labradoodle.  :)

Some control over the speed at which the snow falls would be useful but not essential.

Hello,

a Checkbox in the Profile to let each user decide if there is any snow woul be great.

Some of my users has Problems that the snow needs a lot of CPU time.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on January 18, 2010, 01:14:28 AM
Thanks for the input guys! Shouldn't be too long before 1.1 is released, already working on writing it.

About a user control toggle on/off, expect this by the time Project Snow gets to 1.3, I'd like the Admin options to have a quick release, as user on/off would require more work, but definitely in the works for the mods future as it does slow some computers down by a fair amount (depending on what your settings for it are)

Thanks again,
Labradoodle-360

Hey Project Snow Fans!

I have worked on v1.1 for a couple of hours today, and am pleased to announce the frame of it is built and I am down to the last little bit of coding before all of the edits are done.

Version 1.1 Features
User Toggle (Each user can turn the snow off or on)
Permission for User Toggle (This allows Administrators to control what membergroup(s) can toggle the snow via their profile)
Admin inputs for all snow options (How many flakes, color, etc.)

I do apologize for the delays.

Other weathers are in the making, if I can find someone to help me code the JavaScript, it'd go a lot faster.

Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on July 25, 2010, 03:13:15 PM
I was actually very surprised to see this topic bumped, been a while.

Without a doubt, however, this does work using Version Emulate as it's one simple edit to Load.php and a file added - Which is the same path and the edit itself will remain the same even with an update to SMF 2.0 RC3.

Since quite obviously my coding knowledge and skills have improved by a lot since the first release of this mod, I think an update including full mod settings should take me under an hour, so I am going to look into updating it this month; depending on how my time goes.

As of now, I do not plan on supporting SMF 1.x for version 1.1 of Project Snow.

first of all very nice mod Labradoodle.

as i have very lil knowledge of JS , can you tell me what would be the difference if we would have simply attached that script in index.template.php using <script> tags ? will there some load issues over servers ?
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on July 25, 2010, 04:13:52 PM
Thanks!

And the goal is to keep everything out of templates if possible so it is easily installable for other themes.

By putting it in Load.php rather than index.template.php, it works with every theme without manual edits. More effective and cuts down on my support time as well.
$context['html_headers'] is loaded up in every themes index.template.php for that very reason.

Version 1.1 will also have no template edits needed.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Joker™ on July 25, 2010, 04:15:19 PM
ahh ok thanks a lot, will try to keep that in mind that to play with templates as less as possible ;D
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on July 25, 2010, 04:22:39 PM
The reason being that it makes mods compatible with all themes rather than just the theme they were coded for. It is required by the SMF Customization Team that everything that can be, loaded in a Source rather than inline template for mods.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Joker™ on July 25, 2010, 04:25:47 PM
I should hide myself as all my mods are themes based  :-[  . just one mod of mine yet to be approved is source based.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on July 25, 2010, 04:27:46 PM
As this has gotten quite off topic, I suggest this be split if the conversation should continue or we take it to PM. However, not everything can be controlled via Source, template files do HAVE to be edited in some cases, however, when you can it's good to control it by Source files.

Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on November 07, 2010, 11:27:13 PM
My guess is the fact that this mod is not yet compatible with SMF 1.1.12. - The edits work, however, the XML for 1.1.12 is not in package-info.xml so it shouldn't be letting you install it because "It's not compatible".

In package-info.xml
Code (Find) Select
for="1.1.11"
Code (Replace) Select
for="1.1.11, 1.1.12"

That should work if you re-package the new version and try installing. Furthermore, I am trying very hard to get a release of Project Snow 1.1, although a lot of things are needing to be done prior in order for SMF Modders to be able to support the mod, the rest of the mods, and all needs that have to be met.

Glad you like the mod,

Also, is mind-blowing a good thing? I also have some personal plans based on some comments for 1.2. Which very well may be early next year.

I had been hoping to release Project Snow 1.1 today. After finally getting home, I was anxious to get it released.

However, I noticed a fairly large bug in the JavaScript itself that has a fairly large negative affect on SMF itself - Not just Project Snow. I am still hoping to get it released today or tomorrow; but not sure how long this bug will take to address.

Thanks for the patience.

Here is an update on Project Snow 1.1's development...

I finished my "Project Snow 1.1 'Beta'" which is my final test in which I assure the install and uninstall both work, as well as a clean error log, and settings work and so fourth; this is my last step in the development process before the actual release, so I was just about there.

After installing the Beta on a clean RC4, I noticed a bug in the Load code that I wrote many months back that made some of the toggles not do what they were supposed to. As I already had to re-write that section of the Load.php edit, I decided to clean up the rest, as my coding style has changed since it was originally written, and I've learned some new stuff that better optimized it.

In addition to completely re-coding the Load.php edit (which at my last count was 61 lines) I re-wrote some of the admin settings themselves, to help improve the settings and how they actually worked.

After 4 revisions, I finally have Project Snow 1.1 for RC3 and RC4 working completely error free, and fully optimized.

I do apologize that it's still not released, but as this bug was not expected, nor was I expecting to recode 61 lines of Load code, I figured that was more important than a non-stable, bugged version of 1.1.

However, we are still working hard to get this released before we head off for the night. We still have to work on back-porting this to SMF 1.1.12 along with mod documentation.

In the morning, screenshots will be taken and the readme will be updated then the release will be submitted for download.

So, after so much time, is this mod out of beta yet and safe to be used? It's the 1st of December... high time for some snow!! :)

Edit: Labradoodle-360, i just read your replies above. If you need help to beta-test before you release 1.1, feel free to PM me. I am especially looking forward to the 1.1.12 compatible version.

Edit #2: My primary concern is how the snow effect will be generated? How much extra CPU and memory will this snow effect require? In the past, the snow effect php code that i used was very resource intensive so i had to disable that modification from my forum as many of members who had slower PCs complained of considerable slowdowns when visiting my forum.

But yes, it's finally done! ScottyBoy and I are just finishing up the readme and screenshots then it'll be released.

I know some of my "planned" release times have been thrown off. It will be out tonight, without a doubt, for SURE.

Some of these delays have been caused by things in my life needing to take priority to Project Snow, but most of the delays have been due to us finding more things to fix - Some being bugs, some being major things we considered enough to delay to fix.

Right now, I am waiting for Scotty to get back on, I need to look into one more thing with him, then it hits 1.1 public release.

@ baptie & cryptic : which version of SMF are you using? In v2.0 the snow mod permissions are under Admin > Configuration > Modification Settings.

@ cryptic : it looks as though another mod is distorting your admin screen. Easy to say it now but can you remember the exact order in which you installed the packages?

If you think it's due to Project Snow then uninstall it, uninstall the other mods you want to get rid of then re-install Project Snow.

Title: Re: Project Snow

For 1.1 you should find the settings in Admin > Features and Options > Project Snow.

Regarding the permissions - All of the checks I have done on 1.1.12 with Project Snow 1.1 I have never encountered language string issues - But thanks for reporting that, and I assure you I will look into it shortly.

In regards to mods not uninstalling, Project Snow does not modify "Profile.php" (./Sources) at all, and that is one of the problems in that screenshot when you try to uninstall Aeva. Project Snow does modify Load.php, but it definitely should not be causing an issue.

There are multiple places in the Admin panel with Project Snow settings. Permissions being only one of them.

Yogi however is right. For 2.0 the main Project Snow configuration settings are in Admin > Configuration > Modification Settings > Project Snow. For 1.1 they are in Admin > Features and Options > Project Snow.

Thanks, but where have you seen the falling of red snow, in real life? :)

Project Snow is not compatible with 1.1.11 at this time - Mainly because of time and we were trying to get a stable 1.1 version released, but also because SMF 1.1 are now just bug fixes, so there is no reason to support old versions and encourage people to stay on them.

Unofficial Fix:
package-info.xml
Code (Find) Select
<install for="1.1.12">
Code (Replace) Select
<install for="1.1.11, 1.1.12">
(Extract Project_Snow_1.1.zip on your computer, complete the edit above in the included package-info.xml, then re-zip and you're done.)

If I am understanding you correctly, you should take a peak at the Load edit (by parsing the mod). All of the JS variables are controlled by $modSettings fields (Which are PHP - Obviously).

Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: sharks on December 02, 2010, 10:08:54 AM
I am now testing the mod 1.1 and it looks great but there are a few things i'd like mention:

The settings should be such that when "Use Months To Snow" in unchecked, all the months below cannot be checked, that is, gray out all the check boxes in that case. That would make it more obvious and would avoid some people making the mistake of selecting a month and then forgetting to check "Use Months To Snow" and then reporting a problem with this mod.

Is there a browser that is preferred for this mod? I am using Firefox 3.6.12 and i see no "snow pile up" effect or "melt piled snow".

Could you please give more examples of what characters we could use for "Character For Snow". I tried the ¢ character provided, and it gives a nicer effect that the simple snow ball. And what character to use to get the snow crystal effect?

EDIT: After changing the "Character For Snow" to ¢ i can now see the "snow pile up" effect and "melt piled snow". I guess the default snow ball is too small to notice. :)

EDIT #2: Maybe you could also allow a small image to be used at the "Character for snow". I can't find a text character of the snow crystal, but i found small images of different types of snow crystals.

EDIT #3: After more searching, here is what i found to use as characters in the field "Character for snow":
Snow/Star:
⋆ ✢ ✣ ✤ ✥ ✦ ✧ ✩ ✪ ✫ ✬ ✭ ✮ ✯ ✰ ★ ✱ ✲ ✳ ✴ ✵ ✶ ✷ ✸ ✹ ✺ ✻ ✼ ❄ ❅ ❆
Flowers:

Though soon as I tried to install it on a live forum I got this error.

Project Snow 1.1 is FINALLY released!!!!
Thanks, but where have you seen the falling of red snow, in real life? :)

I used red snow because it's easier to see in screen shots, and because I wanted to show people the color could be changed. It doesn't have to be white.

I cannot get this to remove from the forum, is there a way to add an uninstaller to get rid?

First- Thanks for all the hard work put into this mod. I tried it out on a test forum and it works great and looks great too.

Unfortunately, I can't use it, but wish I could. I realize that source file edits are better than theme and template edits, and support that usually. I have 14 user selectable themes installed, and had hoped that I could use the snow on just the forum default and a Christmas theme installed. Everyone doesn't want to see the snow, so I do not want it forum wide. It seems that it is all or nothing though.

I am not complaining, just commenting. Thanks again for all the hard work.  :)

This was suggested previously, and I would have liked to put that in 1.1, however, we didn't have enough time and were past our desired release date even as the basic featureset is concerned.

I can almost guarantee that you will see this in the next version. In addition, this may not be very hard to code manually, if you'd like to look into it?

However, right now I am working on a fairly large project with Scotty for an upcoming mod! :)
I went the way of a short term simple solution that is working very well on 2 different sites. One RC3 and one RC4.

I simply copied the snowstorm.js to the scripts folder for the theme I wanted snow in, then edited the theme's index.template.php by adding this code.
// forum snow
   echo '
   <script type="text/javascript" src="', $settings['theme_url'], '/scripts/snowstorm.js" type="text/javascript">
    </script>';
right before the bit-
// Output any remaining HTML headers. (from mods, maybe?)

I had to forgo all the admin controls, but editing the js file directly is sufficient enough for what I needed for this season.
I look forward to the next version for next year though.  :)

Well, to be honest...there are quite a few options that could be made. The settings page could be at least double what it is now.

And in reality, this is a quite small mod. - Snow.

Beyond theme control, and bugfixes - I'm not sure how much is left to do with this mod.

Also, we should have an additional option in all members' profile, such that if a member finds all the snow annoying then he/she can disable it in his/her profile individually, without affecting all the other members. That's very important, as an admin, i certainly do not want to impose a new feature on my members without having the option to disable it for those who want their screen to stay clear of snow.

Here is a screen-shot:
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg226.imagevenue.com%2Floc122%2Fth_94080_snow_122_122lo.JPG&hash=0907462ec49283c4cdfd9adb1de2c98b50d264db) (http://img226.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=94080_snow_122_122lo.JPG)

I think the check-box is much better, as it's easier in this case. A drop-down menu isn't very appropriate, as you basically have only 2 options: on or off.
If you have a 3rd or more options, then a drop-down menu would have been better to take less space on the page.

I'm really confused, because when i check the 1.1.11 parser, it shows the same edits as before all these updates were added.  No profile/admin/etc.. template edits or nothing show in the package parser.

Where am i suppose to download the updated snow mod from?  Cause the zips on the mod page don't seem updated according to the package parser.

OMG! Tass, you are right! This option is only available to admin. I had used admin account to set that option off for a few members as they were all complaining that they couldn't find that option in their profiles.

I just used a test account with regular permissions and i confirm this bug. No option visible to the non-admin members to turn off the snow.

Until this is fixed, i have disabled the Snow mod on my forums. Some of my members have also been complaining about higher CPU usage on their computers due to the Javascript used in the snow mod. Is there any way to fix that? Or reduce the CPU usage?

If you know the members who want to disable the snow effect, you must have admin access and then disable it in their individual profiles. The option is currently visible only to admin. It's an important bug as i have been thinking that my members couldn't figure out where to find that option, but this is different altogether, as the option simply isn't there!

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I *believe* that the user-based on/off toggle is permission-based. So, make sure the person's group has permission to see the on/off toggle.
Quote from: Feature set from the readme
  • Permission - Select which membergroup(s) can turn their snow off or on.
  • User Based Toggle - This allows members with the proper permission only to turn their snow off, or back on.

I believe it was made like this so Admins could make it a bonus feature for groups like Donors, though obviously, if you want to give it to all groups, feel free to do so. :)

Thanks for this insight, Ha². I have enabled the permission for "snow" for all my membergroups on the forum BUT that option is still not showing up in their profiles (except for admin)!! :( It is definitely a crazy bug. The snow modification on my forum cannot be enabled until this is fixed.

I do not appreciate people stating that there are "bugs" when they've quite obviously not taken ANY time to check whether they are correct or not. You are very incorrect, and Ha2 is correct. - In addition, you had no confirmation from a developer.

The user-toggle ability to turn snow off or on is permission based so that you can choose which membergroups can turn their snow off, or on in some cases.

You would want to change the color of the snow to a color that you feel looks like rain, and then change the snow character to something you feel also looks like rain.
Quote from: akbora on December 05, 2010, 05:42:42 AM
Can we also make it rain with this mod? If yes how?

Sharks - In response to CPU usage, take a peak at the helptexts. Some of the Project Snow settings either increase CPU usage or decrease, depending on what is entered.

There is always going to be some sort of CPU usage from this mod, as it is JavaScript. So you cannot completely eliminate it. You just have to play with the settings until you find a balance between CPU Usage and Snow :P

Add me to the hate group then, I'm with Sharks. Admin can toggle snow in a members profile, members can't  see a check box. Nor can I see a permission to allow it. 1.1.12 if curious.

Cool mod though :)

Confirmed on clean install of rc4- The user option to disable snow is there and works,
however- on 1.1.12, the option is not present to regular members, even though the permission is set.  Admins can see and change the option when viewing regular member's profile, but that member cannot.

Default Active Snow: 64
Default Total Snow: 128

That is based on personal opinion, although I tend to do around double the default...sometimes more. Depends on speed.

There isn't a hate group in my mind at all. Here's the deal, when people state there are bugs? Other people see the claims that there are bugs, and may be worried about them, may uninstall Project Snow, or may even NOT download it because "there are bugs". So you should be able to understand why I do not like people claiming there are bugs.

Regarding this so called "bug" - It does not exist. I just triple checked the current package xml for 1.1, and it does contain the proper ManagePermissions.php edit which contains the permissions for Project Snow.

If someone would like me to look into this further, if they could PM me a link to their forum with a test admin account and it's login details and I'll take a peak.

Glad to know you finally found the problem. :)
I have tested this thoroughly myself, and i understood the reasons before claiming that there are indeed bugs in the 1.1 release.
Creating a mod such a this undoubtedly took a lot of work and time, and knowing that, i try to do my part and report any problems i might find, so that the mod can be fixed and eventually possibly perfected. It is not crying "bugs!" at a whim. I obviously wouldn't lose my time reporting anything about this mod, if i didn't care about it. ;)

Thanks for the mod.
It works well however it does not seem to be working for IE Internet Explorer.  Works perfect in Firefox but nothing shows in IE

EDITED

This works fine in IE.  You just need to add the site to your Trusted Sites.

I would like to start by saying thanks for the amount of work that people have put into this mod.  I am having some issues that I was hoping I might be able to get assistance with.

We run a small discussion forum currently using SMF version 1.1.12

A couple of the members had suggested this mod so I downloaded the Project_Snow_v1.0.tar.gz and the  Project_Snow_1.1.zip from the following page;

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2356

First I tried to install the Project_Snow_v1.0.tar.gz file through the SMF Admin Control panel under Admin-->Packages-->Download Packages. The .tz file uploaded fine but when I went to Install the mod I got the following error:

Quote
Install Actions
Installations actions for "Project Snow":
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

I figured that perhaps I uploaded the wrong package and that .tz upload was the package for the SMF verson 2 so I tried the zip file Project_Snow_1.1.zip and it uploaded fine.  At first glance seemed to install without any hitches.

The package was installed successfully. You should now be able to use whatever functionality it adds or changes; or not be able to use functionality it removes.

Presto, we have snow on our forums.

As I went to tweak the settings I realized that there was a problem, as there was nowhere in the  Admin Control Panel to adjust anything.  I scoured the entire ACP with no sign of any settings.  I searched these forums to see if I could locate where they should be.  When I went into the "Features and Options" where everyone seemed to suggest the adjustments would be it was simply not there at all.  All I had was Basic Features, Layout & Options, and Karma.  Not a mention nor any sign of the Project Snow mod.

I went into the Permissions and looked around in there and there was no settings or user settings to turn Project Snow on or off.  There wasn't even that box with a blank description beside it as others have mentioned.

It was as if the mod installed and the snowstorm.js was running (snow was falling) but there were no control options, really wierd.

Anyway, after messing with it for an hour or so I figured maybe it was a bad install so I uninstalled the mod and the discussion forum went back to normal (no snow).  I tried to re-deploy the mod per chance the first time it didn't install properly and another issue arose.  It is snowing again on the board, however, I can't get to the "settings" to see if they work because now I get the following error when I click on "Features and Options"

Quote
Features & Options

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare manageprojectsnow() (previously declared in /home/*****/public_html/********/forum/Sources/ModSettings.php:373) in /home/****/public_html/*********/forum/Sources/ModSettings.php on line 452

If I uninstall the mod it uninstalls properly and the board goes back to normal, as well as the "Features and Options" returns to normal and no longer displays the error.  So my forums are fine if I don't have the mod installed.

I did some further poking around and it has been suggested that error was related to the modsettings.php file becoming corrupted because of a bad uninstall.  When I download and look at my modsettings.php file (even after completely uninstalling the package) I see a whole bunch of remaining code from the package.  I guess that is why I can not reinstall the mod.

I will try to attach the modsettings.php file to see if anyone could point to the offending code.  Perhaps we can edit the file to remove whatever seems to be causing the offense.

Remember, this is what the file looks like after the Project_Snow has been uninstalled.  I'm hoping to get the file back to pre-installation state so that I can try to deploy the package again.

Thanks for any help anyone might be able to offer.

I have saved the modsettings.php file as a .txt file for ease.

Look in your packages folder for a subfolder named backup. Within that folder you will find a file with a date- example- 2010-12-02_before_Project_Snow_1.tar.gz
Download that file and uncompress it. Within that archive will be a backup copy of all the files that were edited by the mod installation. They will all be in their original state immediately BEFORE the mod installation.
You can then find the file you need and upload that file to replace the one that the forum is using now.

...weird. You can't have a file that's older then the SMF version; all files are overwritten when upgrading/installing.

Upload the upgrade files.

Edit: After looking into it, the file looks like it's in order. Would you please try uninstalling the mod and then reinstalling it? Make sure to use Version 1.1.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: winter1966 on December 12, 2010, 03:10:38 PM
Sorry for being a pain.....

Labradoodle;  That is the file AFTER I uninstall the mod, so somehow the Project_Snow mod left all of that behind on the uninstall.

I have already tried uninstalling & reinstalling the mod (several times now).  At a glance i seems to install fine, however, I get that error
Quote
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare manageprojectsnow() (previously declared in /home/*****/public_html/********/forum/Sources/ModSettings.php:373) in /home/****/public_html/*********/forum/Sources/ModSettings.php on line 452

when I try to click on "Features and Options" in the admin panel of SMF 1.1.12.

Yoshi;

What do you mean by "upload the upgrade files"   Which upgrade files?

and yes, the date on the index.php file in the /forum/packages/backups directory or folder is dated September 27, 2007 @ 12:00:00.  It is the only file in that folder.

I don't have any other mods installed.  If I can clean the modsettings.php file back to the way it was prior to the install of Project_Snow I can try to redeploy the mod.  Is the modsettings.php file a pretty generic file if you don't have any mods installed?  Maybe I can try replacing it with a clean file.

Can I just delete the modsettings.php file?  Will it rebuild itself upon another install of Project_Snow or will that really mess up the forum?

Ahh.... I get you.  You figure it might be different than the one that I previously attached after I uninstalled the mod.

Here is the file AFTER I install the mod (from about 5 mins ago).

Once again the php extension renamed to txt

{edit}

I see, there is 78 lines of duplicated code in the modsettings.php file after reinstalling the mod.  Lines 372 to 449 (starts on line 372 at // SMF Modders; Project Snow
function ManageProjectSnow($return_config = false)

and then the entire block of code is repeated again starting on line 451.

{/edit}

Now at least I see why I'm getting the error........

Thanks Labradoodle.

I see what was happening, that lines 372-449 were repeated again on lines 451-528.  I have uploaded that modified file and now I no longer get the error message when I click on "Features and Options".

The forum now has snow, however I still don't have any way of being able to control it, which was the reason why I uninstalled it in the first place...........lol.

Here is a screenshot of what I see when I go into "Features and Options".  I was expecting to see something in there where I could adjust the snow settings.

Thanks for your help with the modsettings.php file.

Is that good or bad?   ???

Man, I feel really bad you spending all this time on this.

I found the file you mentioned.  It hasn't been altered since Sept 25, 2007.  The modifications.english.php seems to be the file that was modified today.  I'll attach both just in case.  Also, two other files in that same folder called Help.english and project-snow.english were modified today.

Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on December 12, 2010, 04:21:25 PM
Ah that's right. My bad. I now put my labels in Modifications so I don't have to Load the custom language file every time the label is called.

Try duplicatiing Project-Snow.english.php and renaming the copy Project-Snow.english-utf8.php

Wow!!!

Downloading the file  Project-Snow.english.php and renaming it to Project-Snow.english-utf8.php and re-uploading it worked perfectly.

Project Snow now shows up in the Features and Options.

Thanks so much for your help and patience.  :)

Best Regards!

So you know; there is a known bug in the PS 1.1 version for SMF 1.1 series. And this most likely will not be fixed because we are planning on dropping 1.1. series support for all of our mods because 2.0 is close to hitting final.

Installed this mod on SMF 1.1.12 and it works great! Thanks!

I was wondering if there is a way to have it load on pages that call SSI.PHP, so for those that have their SMF forum integrated with a site, it would snow on the site pages as well.  Is it possible to do this without major rewriting? Like, could a call be made to the function in load from the SSI?

Thanks again
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on December 14, 2010, 05:26:09 PM
You could try to add the code from Load.php to the BOTTOM of SSI.php and see if that works. Very good idea though, I think I may include that in the next bugfix.

Although in the next version SMF 1.1. support will be dropped.

It worked. Thanks. You just need to make sure the $context['html_headers'] gets printed in the header of the normal site pages.

I have talked with Scotty a little bit, and we will most likely shoot out a quick update before Christmas, with at least bugfixes and an SSI.php function.

A function being the better way to go about it rather than using $context['html_headers'].

Thanks for the input and great suggestion!

Not a problem. Glad you like it! :)

Hi m8 wonder if you can help me with a little problem I have since using this mod.

I have uninstalled it not because I wanted to a few of my forum members were moaning about it, don't know why think there all just scrooges.

Anyway since I uninstalled it I kept getting the same error

I have actually requested help for this in here, but had no help at all with it.
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=413265.0

Theres 2 php files in there which I have modified myself I removed a few lines and I haven't had that error anymore upto now anyway...but I still get the Unable to load the 'Project-Snow.english' language file when I have error loggin turned on, but I have turned if off for now because I was getting the same error over and over.

Can you have a look at those 2 php files I have uploaded please see if there ok, I don't know if you need any other file but if you do please say so.

Thanks for any help Lord Alibaski.

Why is the error pointing to this when the package has been removed!!

Yeah m8 this is the main problem.

I clear the log and 2mins after there is about another 50 errors all the same pointing back to the missing project snow language file, so I turn it off. Though soon as I turn it back on it reappears again coming back with the same error.

I have also ran repair_settings.php and it brings up no errors.

My friend told me it might have to be cleared via mysql manually but now I removed line 2918 which was the major issue, this project snow language file problem is nothing so I might just leave error logs turned off and hopefully things will be fine.

Hopefully someone can explain how to fix that critical bug (no option to turn off the snow by individual members, other than admin) from snow 1.1 as the developer has unfortunately given up on the millions still using the predominant SMF 1.1.x branch.

Is the old snow mod available for download? Please attach the file. Thank you.

First of all, an easy way to remove that would be to simply remove the permission aspect of it from Load.php.

However, it should be a fairly easy fix. I just have no motivation to continue supporting 1.1, and neither do the rest of the SMFM Team.

Under /Themes/default/Profile.template.php in your Themes folder, replace
Code (php) Select

<!-- SMF Modders; Project Snow -->';
                           if (($context['snow']['can']['disable']) && (empty($modSettings['disable_snow'])))

with this
Code (php) Select

<!-- SMF Modders; Project Snow -->';
                           if ((allowedTo('project_snow')) && (empty($modSettings['disable_snow'])))

This does not solve the bug, but rather works around it. It does still allow you to control permissions. It is not elegant, but I have confirmed it works for 1.1.12.
If you have custom themes, make sure to change their Profile.template.php pages as well.

actually the main reason im saying that older version is better is...the new version is making my forum little bit slow..i mean when snow fall is going on,my forum is becoming slow lill bit..is there any way i can prevent this??

Yes, by changing the snow settings in your admin panel to lower than default numbers. For more guidance, read each fields helptext, as they are quite detailed.

And so you know, PS1.1 and PS1.0 are identical setting wise right out of the box.

Here are a few lists:

http://sunnyneo.com/avatars/specialcharacters.php

Though I'm sure there are several repeats in them, I think each has at least a couple the others don't. :P

Already working on Project Snow 1.2 which should include some new feature(s), in addition to bug-fixes.

We will hopefully have it released by Christmas, but not sure how it will go.

Just wanted to add, I have a client stuck on rc2 and it installed no issue after emulating rc3. Seems to work with no issues, props to the team that made this.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on December 23, 2010, 02:13:17 AM
I do believe that I checked the code for RC2, as it doesn't change to RC3 for the edits that PS makes, but due to our team guidelines, we are only supporting the latest two versions (RC3 - RC4) so the "official" support for RC2 with Project Snow was dropped.

Glad you like it!

Is it safe to emulate from rc2 to rc3? My other mods are for smf rc2 so i worry not to break my forum if i emulate. There is no option to emulate a specific mod.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on December 24, 2010, 02:02:37 AM
Project Snow 1.1 should work with SMF 2.0 RC2, SMF 2.0 RC3, and SMF 2.0 RC4. In addition to SMF 1.1.10, SMF 1.1.11, and SMF 1.1.12. Although we only technically support "SMF 2.0 RC3, SMF 2.0 RC4, SMF 1.1.11, SMF 1.1.12".
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: searchgr on December 24, 2010, 02:29:15 AM
It says: The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

Thats why i ask if is safe to use the emulation.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on December 24, 2010, 02:44:30 AM
Yeah - It always says that, unless it's in the XML, which it's not in this case, but emulation will work for ya :)

I suggest you read through the documentation, in addition to checking out your forums admin panel. It's not controlled by an image, it's controlled by an HTML Special Character - Which can be changed in the Admin panel.

It should work though..
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on December 29, 2010, 12:40:32 PM
Here is the "official" response - Sorry for the delay.

Project Snow uses a PHP function called htmlspecialchars which is applied to the output of whatever is inputted to the Snow Character field. I think this is also causing another similar issue, although I have not had time recently to review a fix.

For those wanting to test a possible solution, I would suggest removing htmlspecialchars() from the Load.php edit where Snow Character is added to the JS. Although I cannot guarantee that'll fix the issues until I look at it.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Arantor on December 29, 2010, 05:46:23 PM
Is there a reason for using that vs $smcFunc['htmlspecialchars'] ? If you are using htmlspecialchars, are you giving it the right compatibility and character set settings, particularly for UTF-8?

Hello Labradoodle.
Thank you for this your very nice mod.
One question.
How can I updated version 1 to version 1.1?
Are the changes in the files or can I replace only "snowstorm.js" file?
Thank you
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on March 10, 2011, 01:07:18 PM
Not a problem.

There are quite a few changes in 1.1, more so than snowstorm.js, I'd suggest parsing the mod for SMF 2.0 RC3, and seeing what was changed.

No problem. It shouldn't be too tricky to back-port. Depends on how much SMF you know...

Post by: hcfwesker on April 15, 2011, 06:43:05 PM
is there no way to have a custom image fall in place of the snow in 1.1, like the 1.0 version had?    I can't seem to get version 1.0 readded back on my site.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on April 15, 2011, 06:45:03 PM
There is, and I do believe at one point I actually did it for the heck of it. But it's not exactly easy to accomplish iirc. Involves editing snowstorm.js mainly.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: hcfwesker on April 16, 2011, 02:03:20 AM
yeah, i would fail in that department.  Any way to make the snow multicolored, like 3 different colors?  i really hope so.

but, i been watching the progress of this since december, and it's come a long way, and you did an amazing job, especially with all the customizable features in the admin page.

I do believe we got it out before Christmas, didn't we?

I am grateful to Labradoodle-360 for his hard work on this mod, however if memory serves correctly, there was a huge issue with this mod which forced me to uninstall it. The problem was a missing setting (not visible to the common membergroup, other than admin) where a member could choose to disable the snow if he/she wanted to from profile settings. So, has that been fixed?

I'm looking forward to using this MOd again for the holidays :)  I just can't find my old winter theme we had, after upgrading to 2.0 final, i forgot to keep it lol, so gotta go make another one.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on November 22, 2011, 12:25:32 PM
Probably, although now that SMF 2.0.[0-1] is out, there's no real point in updating the old versions.

Especially since Project Snow 2.0, will hopefully be a complete re-write.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on November 22, 2011, 04:54:38 PM
Well, it's about time again, for Project Snow to be updated.

This will most likely be a full re-write (jumping from 1.x. to 2.0), and so I would like to add some cool new features, besides a complete re-code and a nice admin interface.

Are there any ideas of what could be added that would be helpful or cool to have? I'd like to get writing this tomorrow, so the sooner you post, the better chance it'll make it in our next version.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: hcfwesker on November 22, 2011, 05:49:49 PM
The features you had before were great.  Especially allowing members permission to turn on/off.  My request is that snow is theme selectable.  Some themes I don't want snow to appear on.

I started developing Project Snow 2.0 last night.

Here are my plans to this point:
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: hcfwesker on November 24, 2011, 06:52:48 PM
Only thing that concerns me is the member customization options.  But if you say you're coding in limitations to that then it should be ok.  some of those options I'll probably edit out; but I do like them being able to change the color, pretty pro.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: Matthew K. on November 24, 2011, 06:57:15 PM
I'm not quite sure how I want to set up the member customizations yet.

The ideal situation would be to set up "templates" based on membergroups, almost like the permissions system so that you could allow different membergroups to change different options, although I'm not sure how much time I want to put into it.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: hcfwesker on November 24, 2011, 07:28:57 PM
To be quiet honest, just allwoing members to turn on/off snow is good enough for me.  Not sure about others, but I'm not picky and don't see the need for you to try and put more into the MOD than it really needs.  Plus you know members will be begging for this the more and more it gets closer to the holidays trying to rush you lol
Title: Re: Project Snow

Hi,

Is there any sign of the V2 update for this?

Just one point I have noticed with the current version, using the X-Mas and SMF Curve themes.

It works OK with SMF 2.0.1 but when using IE9 as the snow falls outside the perimeter of the screen it makes the scroll bars at the side and bottom jump around therefore making the screen jump too.

Has anyone else noticed this and if so have you fixed it?

I know there are lots of people who use Firefox etc but there are also a lot who still use IE so maybe a check for IE9 before posting the new version would be an idea...at least it would save all those emails about bugs ;)

Thanks

Not the exact same problem.  But I have noticed when using scroll bars on the forum ( like drop downs when moving a topic) the scroll bar doesnt scroll, it keeps jumping back up.  and didnt notice it until recently, so it probably is cause of the falling snow.

QuoteMove the included file "snowstorm.js" to "./Themes/default/scripts".

you also need to move this script to other custom  themes, If i remember correctly.  Or it'll only snow on the smf default curve theme.  Check the SMF Default Theme and see if it's snowing there.

Before I started my reload I checked with my provider and I think why it isn't working.  They no longer support Java Servlets on my hosting company and unless I'm seeing something wrong this uses Java Servlets.

Sorry for all the trouble and I do appreciate everyone's help and I guess I should have checked with them prior.  It was just that it worked last year so I assumed it would work this year.

Any feature / change requests for a short next version? I was working on an HTML5 Native Support framework modification which would be the base of the next full version for color pickers and other cool HTML5 / jQuery inputs. But with my schedule I won't have enough time to finish both in a reasonable time.

I'd love to release a small version with some updates if there are any thoughts.

As long as it has the basics I don't mind.

• Enable/Disable the mod.
• Change the speed of the snow.
• Enable/Disable accumulation of snow off the bottom of the page.
• Enable/Disable the tracking of the snow in the direction of the mouse.

These are what I would say are basics ;)

I have removed

• Change the color of snow.
• Change the design of the snow.

for me these are not necessary.

Oh, well it would have everything the last version did, for sure. But is there anything else that's relatively simple or small that I can add? Along with the latest version compatibility?

Greetings!  What a wonderful Mod especially for the holiday season.  I find it to be a nice touch for those visiting the site and one day instead of many just guesting they will join.  Thus giving them the permission to turn it off for registred users is an awesome idea :)

Just a silly question, maybe I have something set up wrong?  On our site, there are some topics very long in nature.  Each message is quite large in some, for example: Vist here to see my explanation in action (http://divinemercy.heavenboundministry.com/friends/index.php?topic=275.0#lastPost).  The snow starts in a few seconds of arrival to the topic and works great.  But if someone scrolls to quickly -- like say to the next message, it seems that the snow eventually or never arrives.

Could you take a peak and assist me and help me find my error.

Thank you so much and once again, Merry Christmas and a safe holiday season to all.

It actually uses a text character, not an image. Configuring an image would be difficult, however, there is a setting in the admin panel that allows you to change what character is used.

There is a z-index setting in the admin panel which is what controls the layering of the snow in correspondence to your forum. Beyond the z-index (if that's correct) you can also only have the snow be applied to a certain element(s), which could also be what it's doing, depending on what settings you have applied.

I'm using ADK Snow Effect 1.0 and cant get a realist snowflake. I've tried several different codes for the flake and none of them work for a realist flake..... any suggestions?
Currently using the "*" and it displays the flake as a 5 point star.

Greetings all,

Merry Christmas to all, only less than 2 days to go.  Maybe for once we may get real snow this Season.

I was entering a message and as always went to preview the message before posting and all I got was Fetching Preview...  and nothing.  I have my original help message (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=493298.0) in the 2.0 support and someone had mentioned it could be a javascript interference with this awesome mod I have installed?  Not sure if that is the case, but best to come here and place my plea for help.

Thank you so much.

Be safe this Holiday Season

Be glad to help.  Here is a little info I answered to a previous Post.  Though I am quite happy with this MOD.

This is what I use for our site: ❅ Just copy and then paste into the character field.  You can see it here at:  Visit here.  To see Snowflake  (http://www.divinemercystpauls.com/friends/).  We are a prayer group just using our site as a demonstration of the unicode snowflake character hex code is: &#x2745;

The Character itself can be copied and pasted in this mod as well.

Title: Re: Project Snow

When you paste the code, are you putting in the semicolon as well?  Seems to me, I had to put the code into the .js file and the semicolon is needed as well.  There are three different scripts that use a .js file and not the nifty admin panel this mod gives you.  If you are using project snowflake, simpliest was in admin is just to paste the seen character and it works like a champ.  If you have to go into the I think its called snowflake.js file, you will need to enter the entire hex code with the semicolon.

I'm on vacation so my reply will be limited for the time-being.

- I doubt that JS error comes from Snowstorm, if it does, you'll have to contact the JS script author (check credits) as I only wrote the SMF integration portion.

- I appreciate the comments about the nice admin panel, eventually I want to expand it when HTML5 is more widely supported with their input fields so I don't have to write my own framework to bring global browser support.

- As William already stated, you can add either the actual character OR the entity to the admin panel (Character to Snow) and it should work, as also stated make sure to include the trailing semi-colon.

Best Regards,
Labradoodle-360

In admin, we can insert character for snow --- * --- for instance then change size. Is there anyway to insert a small jpg for other holidays or using a dingbat font to insert a character that way?

I remember using this once when it was just there and no way to turn it off for some and really love this new feature. Thus I would love to have it be used most of the year thru various holidays or just having like fairy dust since our forum is fantasy.

As of now, there is no easy way to change the specific character to an image. This may be included in the next version. I was hoping to write an update before Christmas, but on top of finals, I've been extremely sick for the past few weeks, so school is now that much more important. I will try to pump this one out before it stops snowing where I'm from :)

Sweety you take care of you primarily, without you around who gonna help the others make mods for us to play with.

I love that you added the part to turn it off per member and it would be great to be able to use a small graphic or two, like a snowflake, christmas present or tree or Santa---or other holidays like Valentine's, St. Patrick or my favorite Halloween...LOL

but that can wait until you get better.

Thanks

Post by: Matthew K. on December 09, 2013, 12:14:27 AM
Originally, when I first wrote the modification, it was simply implementing a snow effect, on top of SMF. The updated version was intended to not just lay the snow script on top of SMF, but it was designed to implement a lot of the manipulatable JavaScript variables to SMF so that the settings already available would be easy to change on an SMF installation.

Back then, I didn't know JavaScript very well at all. I could play with it and we could be friendly, but I wasn't able to do much. Now, that has changed. At one point, I had tried to use an actual image rather than a character, but it would've required actual changes to the snow script on a much deeper level than just tweaking a variable or two. This should be something that I can accomplish much more quickly now. So I'd definitely look into this for an update.

Right after developing Project Snow, I worked with another developer on making a "Forum Weather" modification that would have snow, rain, leaves and other such effects available to your forum. Unfortunately however, it was dropped pretty quickly due to no one being able to write the JavaScript for me.

we are almost one year further... I also want to have the possibility to change the character for 1 or more small images. Has there been any progress or when can we expect that change?

I live in the Netherlands and in the beginning of December we have an event called "Santa Claus". Everybody here knows Santa Claus and his Black Peters. So I would like to have falling down (in stead of snow) small pictures of Santa Claus and Black Peter.

Before the forum was running with vBulletin and they had such a mod (js based). If you want I can  send you that js file.

Hi Friends,
I just discovered Project Snow, and quite enjoy it.  I haven't been able to read the whole 22 pages of messages, but from what I've read, it seems excessive cpu use seems to be a known issue.

I'm wondering if anyone has either figured out the kind of cofiguration that goes easiest on visitors' cpu, or even just stumbled upon it?

I'm rather known for having a good deal of patience, and don't give up easy on a problem, if it's something I really want.  But I've spent a few hours daily, over the last week or so, trying to find some kind of balance that allows a nice gentle snowfall, but doesn't cause my computer fan to run constantly.

I have not found any acceptable configuration.  So I'm wondering if anyone else has?

I actually have had to uninstall it, for the time being, and I can't remember the name of the setting that was a trade off between cpu use and the speed of the snowfall.  But best setting I found for that was 50.  But maybe if there was a way to understand how the various options affect each other, it would help to discover that optimum balance.

Unfortunately, it seems to be entirely a matter of trial and error.  Isn't there some way to make sense of it all?

Thanks for your help   :)

The best feature to me on this mod unlike the other versions....is that in admin you can choose to turn it off for any month not wanting the snow, and the most important thing----allow members to turn it off in their profiles for those with slower machines or that do not want it to snow.

Ii had to remove mine cause of server issues but now it won't install with version 2.0.9 of SMF, too bad cause I do want it still.
Title: Re: Project Snow
Post by: brynn on December 16, 2014, 01:24:00 PM
Thanks DarkAngel.  Yes, I'm aware of those options.  But if members have to disable it, to prevent the heavy cpu use, what's the point of installing it?

It's working for me on 2.0.9, but if there's some conflict, maybe that's exaggerating the cpu issue?

Yes for the forums I have that had it previously installed prior to the upgrade to 2.0.9 the mod still works but for the few that I had to totally upload fresh files for it does not wish to behave.

It claims to have errors in installation (I checked and it seems some text is not quite what it was), can't remember right now what it says. Tried installing it first before any other mod and still the error.

I tried manually editing since it did snow but the admin controls and individual members being able to turn it off/on were not available either.

Having this installed gave me 3 errors in the error log any time some one accessed their profile and 3 more when they went back to the forum itself. This got much worse when I enabled the group permissions. It's odd since none of the errors affected any obvious forum functionality. The cpu usage though is a major problem as it would create havoc with members' browser scrollbars, etc.

I was wondering if the emulation handles the requests different so in darkangel612s case the functions are not broken and in yours steve the errors are not generated.  I used to use this a while back on a gaming forums but cant really recall the code side.

What kind of errors is it throwing up ?
