I haven't installed this as of yet, but does it delay at all before sending them to a page? The reason I ask I have the show ban time mod installed and I'd like to let the banned member know for one they are banned and for how long.

However on the flip side with some spammers I can care less and I'd like to simply get rid of them ,but I have to at least take care of my decent members if I was to do a temp ban.

I think this will answer your question fairly well, I have included an option to check in the admin panel to ONLY redirect forever bans exactly for this reason, if you check that box only people who were banned forever will get redirected.

This is useful so that you don't redirect people, and lose traffic because they keep getting redirected and don't come back.

Does that answer your question?

Uh, yeah hahahaha sorry I didn't catch the forever ban line.

Actually you couldn't of been more clear on that statement. ;)

My goal is for the next version to be 2.0 compatible, as things have changed in the context and it's still fairly buggy.
But, if I have time, I may add another optional field to the admin panel for redirection time, so they're redirected after the inputted time.

Let me know how it works for you :)

Title: Re: Redirect Banned Users
Post by: kizer on February 05, 2010, 04:49:37 PM
Welp I installed it manually in 1.1.10 and it did not forward a perm banned user. I don't know if its because something changed between 1.1.10 and 1.1.11, but it didn't work. I need to update to 1.1.11 soon, but I can't seem to do it automatically because I must have a mod that doesn't allow it, but I'll have to try this one later it appears.
Title: Re: Redirect Banned Users
Post by: Matthew K. on February 05, 2010, 06:49:08 PM
Well, it's definitely a possibility as 1.1 updates are for security, and nothing else. And this mod does effect security. As I have not tested or experimented this with 1.1.10, first of all, I do not suggest installing my mod (even manually) in the case of security changes that this may negatively effect.

Secondly, I would upgrade to 1.1.11 as soon as possible, as security updates were made.
This is off the mod topic, but to upgrade your forum you must uninstall all mods despite errors received and then after the upgrade reinstall them.

Version 1.1 released!

Features
SMF 2.0 RC2 Compatibility
SMF 1.1.11 Bugfix

It is VERY highly recommended that you uninstall version 1.0 and install version 1.1 as a bug has been addressed.

Enjoy,

Pls, change that == NULL to !=0 (zero) in order for this mod to properly work:

      if(!empty($modSettings['redirect_fb_only']) && (isset($_SESSION['ban']['expire_time']) && $_SESSION['ban']['expire_time'] == 0) && !empty($modSettings['banned_url']))

Thx

I am sure your suggestion would work as well. However, it took me some time to understand why this MOD was not working the way it supposed to! And couple of comments thanking the developer were even more puzzling.

I think I've got everything set up right. This is my first time using the instructions in the parse file, but by golly I think I did it. Now for the stupid question...
How can I tell if everything is doing what it's supposed to. Is there somewhere I can check to see the result? Since I'm not the one banned, I don't get to
see the page. How can I check it?   Thanks.

I had my host do a restore. Everything was fine. I reinstalled the mod and put in the link for the page I wanted. I went into admin and put a ban on the dummy. Now I can't get back to the login page to get myself logged in. Whenever I try to go to login, it brings me back to the banned page. What do I do now?

Title: Re: Redirect Banned Users
Post by: faeriedust on June 04, 2010, 06:04:07 PM
I think I've figured out what's happening. Evidently, when I banned the dummy member it also locked out my IP address. I'm having my host do another restore and I think I'll call it quits on this mod. Thanks for the help.

Sabre is correct. What you did to test it is something I have already done and realized the problem it arises, the test you used was not given by the mod author.

Very easy to unban your IP though. This is not an issue with my mod.

Hi, I have the "Stop Forum Spam" package on my site which bans known spammers IP addresses. Your package doesn't redirect that type of ban. Am I doing something wrong? Or are there any plans to make these packages work together.

Hi :)

A wonderful and very needed modification.
How can I check if it works? Where is the switch you saved? In the session, or in the database?
How does this modification? Is a permanent redirect (301)?
If I gets me baned user, it is forwarded immediately, he feels the first message that is banned?
I ask because I'm a month under strong attack by spambots, of course, to banish them, but I received a large number of entries in the logs.
That is why I asked whether, if redirected, it is also an entry in the error logs? Is it the same as the user visits baned?
I have a problem with the unprecedented number of spambots, and I'm curious if your modifications work correctly, and how can I check this?
Another question - what can I do to be permanent redirect (301), without logging errors, redirected users?
Thank you for your reply.

Regards:)
roco

Title: Re: Redirect Banned Users
Post by: roco on July 31, 2010, 09:53:44 AM
Hey Labradoodle :)

The problem - unfortunately, it is my bad English, but I try to ;)

What I understand from your modification?

- Config is stored in the session
- It is used to check with the SMF function and function - for redirections

Banned users are directed to a specific address indicated
we have the ability to select - all banned.

Okay and here I need little more extended Your Mod..

And it is precisely at this point, would be imparted to choose a permanent redirect - (without logging) hits - -> 301
There must be not ins .httaccess, you can redirect spambots to the 301 in php, but it's important that shouldby widthout logging of hits.
So we need prevent log the errors from baned user.
When e.g. we config --> 301 - redirect, than is only 301 redirect without log :)

Generally it is accepted that we have 2 versions forumSMF
- V1.1.11 -> we are told that it is stable
- V2.0 RC3 -> test version - not for production was

But this is not true, because we do not have any stable version of the Forum.
v. 2.0 has been enhanced, for example, a security-related functions, but nothing came to v1.1.11 eg capcha for quick answers or writing posts.

I drive a mini-saddle (smf-help!) For people from Poland here: SMF-Help! (http://poligon.ricoroco.com/fora/smf/index.php)
This version of SMF is 1.1.11, and must be open for guests. Protection against spambots, unfortunately, is not tight...

I use their own security, but we have a strong attack of spambots.
I do not know if you are redirected through your modifications, or not? how prooven this?

..and I have a monstrous amount of errors caused by hits spambots.
For example, for 3 days was 860 error pages! (x 15 per page = ~12 900 hits on error page) and i realy need this dings?
- I don't think so

This is a real attack, performed by an application for spamming the forums SMF.

Idea of Your Mod is super-hiper-power-wow :)

but i need extended Your mod.

I need + 1 function => (the checkbox in AP?) => 301(Moved Permanently),  withoud logged this.
Can you think about it, please?

And now is more clear what I mean?

The examples..

PHP:

<?php
header
("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: http://www.new-domain.com");
exit();
?>

or:

<?php
header
("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: http://www.new-domain.com");
header("Connection: close");
?>

or:

<?php
header
('HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently');
header('Location: http://www.new-domain.com'.$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']);
header('Connection: close');
?>

or in .htaccess

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.new-domain.com $1 [R=301,L]

or more pur:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.new-domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

But.. only for baned users hehe

Exactly a redirect, (301), without logging errors - I would like to extend your modification.
Can you help me with this, please?

Thank You :)

Regards :)

Can you please update this mod for SMF 2.0 RC4  :)
Title: Re: Redirect Banned Users
Post by: Skystone on January 06, 2011, 04:03:12 AM
Hi I was able through an SMF package parser to get this to (almost) work in SMF 1.1.12. However I had to restore from backups because..

In SMF 1.1.12 when you apply the mod it gives the incompatible error and will not let you install anyway as many other mods.

So the StopSpammer.php I believe it is called? (I forgot to save the error message) is being called for and is not there. I am surmising that there may be some database tables that need to be configured as well.

Is there anyway to get the necessary files to install and any database configuration files manually?

If so I can get this to work for my SMF 1.1.12. I'd really like to it's a great mod.

Thanks

I really like this mod but after upgrading to 2.0 Gold I can't install it for this new version due to errors with a couple of the templates that show up in the Package Manager.

I've got a wildcard set for the last octet in the ban triggers and I am using 0 for an immediate redirect, but I had 30 people with the same ip except for the last octet visible as guests today.  Should I set a ban trigger for the full ips being used?

You mean what is already built into 2.0 for version emulate? I went to install the mod but I get a test failed at security.php file.

Then try manually installing it.

Well I  have a slight difference in the section of coding for security.php file, where the manual install says look for 'user' at the end of the code and mine says 'ban'. I can't find any mods I already have installed that would have altered that part of the coding so I am not sure why there is a difference and a little wary about changing it. Any suggestions?

My coding
        // You banned, sucka!
        fatal_error(sprintf($txt['your_ban'], $old_name) . (empty($_SESSION['ban']['cannot_access']['reason']) ? '' : '<br />' . $_SESSION['ban']['cannot_access']['reason']) . '<br />' . (!empty($_SESSION['ban']['expire_time']) ? sprintf($txt['your_ban_expires'], timeformat($_SESSION['ban']['expire_time'], false)) : $txt['your_ban_expires_never']), 'ban');

The coding that I should be looking for
        // You banned, sucka!
        fatal_error(sprintf($txt['your_ban'], $old_name) . (empty($_SESSION['ban']['cannot_access']['reason']) ? '' : '<br />' . $_SESSION['ban']['cannot_access']['reason']) . '<br />' . (!empty($_SESSION['ban']['expire_time']) ? sprintf($txt['your_ban_expires'], timeformat($_SESSION['ban']['expire_time'], false)) : $txt['your_ban_expires_never']), 'user');

Hrm, I just wanted to let you know that installing this mod caused Topic Descriptions (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3012) to become accessible in the Misc. Admin section. I'm no coder, so I have no idea why. Uninstalling it made TDs once more accessible though..?

Just thought I'd let you know.

Do you have a version of this program for 1.1.18?  I am being pelted with spammers and bots. They just keep coming.  I would love to be able to redirect them to some other place.  If you don't have a version now, are you planning one?  I am starting to get desperate!

It looks like it works for 1.1.11 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=2385;id=135249)

Have you tried emulating and seeing if it installs?

No... how would I do that?  When I try to install it, I get a message saying the file is corrupt or it is for the wrong version of SMF.

Think there is a mod for 1.1 which is for these situations.

Title: Re: Redirect Banned Users

Okay, so if I"m reading all of this right, this won't work for me even if I do emulate another version?

I did download and install the emulation mod and was getting ready to try the Redirect mod but not sure now if I should or not.

I have not even considered going to version 2 - just the thought scares the heck out of me.  I was running 1.1.11 and having problems and a very nice person on here upgraded me all the way up to 1.1.18 because I just am not that knowledgeable that I feel comfortable in doing major things like that.  So, I'm going to have to stay with what I have.

Bottom line.. should I try installing that mod emulationg 1.1.11 or not?

I backed up my entire site to my remote hard drive yesterday so I guess I couldn't lose a lot.  I may try it... if I can get up the nerve!  I am always so afraid of crashing things that I know I cannot fix!

Thanks for all the info and advice.

Me too, Colin.  It has been such a beautiful peaceful day with a clean error log!!  We were getting a huge number of hits.. like up to 20 per day.  I kept banning and banning but they still came back and were on the error list.  Now, they're finally gone!!  Hope Google doesn't mind!! ;D

That's a neat idea too!  It's too bad they're not "people", I know they are bots based on my error log. They try to log in every day around the same time and try a bunch of times.  They can't do that now.  It really didn't do anything but fill up my error log but I like a clean house.  I'm so happy they are GONE!

Maybe I should find some really disgusting where I could direct them just in case some happen to be real people.

It's interesting that since I added the "reason for joining" mod, they all type in 6 random characters.  That alone tells me they are not people because they type exactly 6 each time.  What I don't know is how they get past the questions that I ask... just 3 but they must have the right answers.   Maybe they are people to start with, then once they're in, they send bots?  I don't know much about that stuff but I am certainly a happy camper now that they're gone!!

I only use 1 question. The question should be related to your forum genre that actual guests would know the answer to. Really, no need to have all 3. Make it easy for potential new members, not you. ;)

Depends on the question. Bots can solve math questions, and have been shown to look up the answers on Google. On top of that, there is a distributed list where the question and answers are solved initially by a human then shared with all the other copies of the bot, if that makes sense...

That's why is recommended to change such 1 question once in a while if spam registration is detected.

My questions are simple..

1.  What color is blue?
2.  What is the current year?
3.  What is 25+10?

I made it as easy as I could. We have some members who even have trouble with these!   :)

1. will be answered by most bots without too much trouble.
2. will be answered by a decent percentage of bots.
3. can be answered by almost any bot.

Absolutely not.

You have math,colors there. Bots now-a-days know how to answer all 3 questions. I suggest a question related to your forum.

ex.  chevyavalancheclub.com is about trucks right? The secusrity question is, how many spark plugs the chevy avalanche has? Answer is 8.

Hmmmmm... that might be pretty hard to come up with a good one since we are a diversified graphic group.  Will give it some thought.  If a person is a rank beginner, they would have problem answering a question relating to the software.

It should work, but you will need to emulate versions. How can I install a mod that doesn't work in my SMF version? (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/How_can_install_a_mod_that_doesn%27t_work_in_my_SMF_version)
