Title: Upgrading from 1.1.11 to 2.0.3 for dummies
Post by: 3ball on July 27, 2010, 10:30:10 AM
I have a new board installed at http://showdownpokergear.com/forum/index.php (http://showdownpokergear.com/forum/index.php).  I've used SMF boards in the past for different sites, and am using one again for my business site as it is obviously a fantastic board.

I've stumbled through a little on upgrading, but could maybe use a little more help before I attempt the upgrade.  I'd like to get this done while to board is still fairly new as it won't be very disruptive.  Admittedly, I'm not very good at databases and programming and such, which is why I'm posting here for help now.

Thanks!

Is backing up as simple as going in to the admin section, forum maintenance and clicking the download link under the Forum Maintenance - Backup Database section?

That and download your files from server as well. However, the database is more important. During upgrade you'll also have an option to create a backup of the tables. Be safe and do that as well  ;)

If I were you I would backup my database from phpMyadmin too and restore it at a test forum to make sure that it really works if I will need to use it.

What tool is your host using in their server to manage the MySQL databases? phpMyadmin or some other tool? I suggested that because the backups made from the Admin Panels are known to be with problems most of the times, especially if you have an avarage or big forum. Not only for Smf though, for all the other forums too.

/me prefers the easy way...

CPanel>Files>Backups.

You restore from there, too.

Piece of cake!

It must be.... I can do it! ;)

Maybe I should wait until 2.0 is ready for everyone?    ;D

That's what I'm doing, to be honest.

The blurb DOES say "Note: As this is in development, we do not recommend running SMF 2.0 RC3 on a production site.", after all.

What to do, what to do?  There are so many cool things with the new version that I want to play with!  What is the timeline for public release?   ;D

To be honest if you are unsure on whether to go to 2.0 RC3 the best way to start is by starting a test forum.

I just had a nosy at the forum you have now and although it looks busy.

A It needs a banner

B It needs to get off the default theme.

In my opinion, go with SMF 2.0 RC3. The problems to me are not serious enough to make the experience not worth the features; again, my opinion.

All of my sites, development and personal are SMF 2.0 RC3, and I highly encourage everyone using 1.1x to go with 2.0x, I have also for the most part stopped developing mods for SMF 1.1x and do not plan on back-porting any future mods.

If I could code worth a damn, it would already be done.  I'm kind of at the mercy of my web guy getting it setup someday to flow at least somewhat similar to my main website.  That is definitely on the list to do though.

I added a banner, but it jacks the screen up because it doesn't overwrite the default one.  I'm assuming that's an easy fix, but I don't know CSS at all.   :(

It's getting there which is the main thing.

You want a logo, like I have, here?

http://www.tlakoc.org.uk

It's easy enough to do that, if you want to.

The ultimate goal will be to have it similar to my main site.  The banner logo that I put on is the same as the main site.  I actually don't mind the default theme.  I'll just need it modified to fit my site though.  Colors, banner, footer, etc...

Just add this to the index.template.php file, on the line immediately after the <body>'; tag.

<div style = "text-align: center;"> <img src="http://www.URLForYourBanner.giff" usemap="#Banner" alt="" style="border-style:none" /></div>

Obviously, you'll need to change the URL to your graphic.

KEEP A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL... Just in case. ;)
