Hello I'm a beginner at this, I run a forum using SMF Package 1.1.11. I see that SMF 2.0 RC3 was released in March is this version just an update or a complete upgrade and is it suggested that I upgrade my forum software to the newer version?
If you are just starting out I would suggest RC3 since that will be the final version soon. But first check that the themes and mods you want work for that version. If not wait for SMF 2.0 final
I don't have many themes available as of yet, so losing those would not be a problem. Some of the mods I wanted to install don't work with the version I have now. I just wanted to know what is different with the newer version that I don't have with the old version.
I would suggest then to upgrade if some of the mods don't work with your current version that sounds like the best plan.
ok thanks
would I just install through the packages manager like a mod install?

No, you'll need to upload the files and run the upgrader. See here for more information on upgrading:
Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)
Since you have mods installed, use the large upgradepackage. Unzip it on your local drive and upload the files to your forumlocation, to overwrite the existing files. After uploading, run the upgrader by adding upgrade.php to your forum url:
http://www.yoursite.com/forum/upgrade.php
Maybe you're going to spank me ... but I have to ask...
Does it worth to possible pain of upgrading?
I mean.. what is the major differences? I can't find any "feature list"... is there any?
I mean something like
Features | | SMF 1.1.11 | | SMF 2.0 |
| | |
| | |
Feature C | | |
Feature D | | |
No real comparison chart exists that I know of, but there are a lot of improvements and new features introduced in 2.0 :)
At this particular time though, I would advice to hold off upgrading until RC4 comes out,
or if you are not in a hurry as such, then maybe even wait for 2.0 final.
Um yeah, I'm starting with 1.1.11. I think that's the best due to more mods and themes available. Because I plan to have a forum up and running. Will that cause any trouble in future upgradings with DB?
Do you suggest me to begin with 2.0RC3? As I don't know to see if there's an ETA for Final Release. Or I should just go with 1.1.11 and in future upgrading mods and such won't be hard? Thank you.
At this point, if you are not in a hurry - I'd say wait for 2.0 RC4 to come out, and go with that.
Either way, later upgrading from 1.1.11 to 2.0 final or from 2.0 RC4 to 2.0 final, will be a large upgrade.
I am really tired about RC1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and may be 2.0 RC 10. Please when will 2.0 be releasd finally. Thanks.

When it is deemed ready to be released. And don't worry, there will not be 10 RCs :P
