I have this file from a forum that i would like to save would it be possible to convert that to SMF on a different domain and host than where the old forum was stored?
This file, I assume this is a databasebackup?
I am not sure I understand this. Why do you want to convert it on a different domain and then move it to your current location?
This is the best approach:
- Restore your phpbb-forum and backup on your current domain.
- Install SMF on your current domain, for example in a directory SMF. Make sure it uses the same database as your phpBB.
- Download the phpbb2_smf converter from the download page (http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters), upload it to your webserver and run it.
After that, you want to move SMF to your current phpBB location. Delete the folder in which your phpBB files were stored, then rename the folder in which you installed SMF to whatever your phpBB forum used and run repair_setting.php, which you can also find on the download page (http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters).
