RHTAMI - Remove Hot Topic And Message Icons
- For SMF 1.1.x and SMF 2.0.x
- Fully hook, no file modification For SMF 2.0.x.
1. Please do your own backup though every installation is backed up automatically.
2. This mod remove hot topic and message icons at four places in your forum.
3. They are in messsage index, display, recent and post templates.
4. All you need to do is turn it on or off in Mod Settings page, save it and you are good to go.
5. You can test it in all SMF 2.0.x lower version as IMO it should work just fine. ;)
6. Avoid using this mod with ROHTI - Re-Organize Hot Topic Icon (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2708) mod.
7. Do report if there is any error(s).

Yeah, it would be great to see how the message index of the forum looks like after installing this mod. And please add screen-shots of any other section of the forum that this mod modifies.
On another note, i have to say that this mod is an excellent idea. I had suggested something similar not so long ago, where the column of the "hot topics" would be disabled based on selectable boards, as well as the "message icon" column. That way, we can have more useful space (width) on the screen for boards with many long topic titles. Do you think you could implement this in your next release? It would definitely be a significant improvement. ;)

Page created in 0.207 seconds with 79 queries.
I used to have below 20 queries at all times. Could you please check and see if you can optimize the number of queries used??

I am not sure about that. We don't actually create any new database for this mod. Let me test it further and see about it.

Don't suppose to be all the way around? No hot topic, no queries to count topic's post?
It removes the icon but I am not sure about the queries, really. If the if else function caused that, I will remove it in the future so it will a simple remove rather then using if else function.

I apologize for my outcry of a "bug", but it seems like it was some other mod that i had installed just before this one, that was causing the excessive queries. I disabled and then enabled this mod, and it seems like it adds no extra query when viewing the message index. I see 16 queries before enabling this mod and still 16 queries after enabling this mod.
Good job, ahrasis and i'm very earnestly waiting for your next releases with the improvements and additional features. :)

Both would be perfect, so that all message icons (as well as the message icon column) can be removed entirely from all forum areas, when the "remove message icon" option is checked in the admin panel. Also, in the post editor, there should be no drop-down menu to select the message icon.

I am basically interested on learning how the MessageIndex.template.php and Display.template.php works in depth so basically, removing message icon is part of my interest. I am not sure when but I think I'll be doing it sometimes later.

However, there is a small bug that needs to be fixed. After installing the Remove Hot Topic & First Message Icon Mod, there is still the option "Message icon: " when posting a new topic and when modifying an existing topic. That option should have been removed after installing your updated mod, as it's useless to allow selecting the message icon when the latter will not be displayed in the topics list.
Also, it would be perfect if you could integrate the following independent options in the admin panel:
1. remove hot topics icons only.
2. remove message icons only.
(if both options 1 and 2 are checked, then both should be disabled on the entire forum).

I will see to it later as it will require some times and testings. RC4 has shown a lot of changes which is quite surprising since it is supposed to be a security release only.
Another thing that you missed. After installing your mod, when viewing unread posts, as well as unread replies, the hot post icons and message icons are still visible. They should be removed completely from the entire forum. I hope you will fix that also in your next release. :)

Yes, I uninstalled the old one and then installed the new one. As the previous one, it did remove the icons from the boards directly, but not from the "unread topics" listing or the "your posts" listing.
I also tried to uninstall it, just to make sure that the code from the previous version was reset back to normal. And then I re-installed it. Still the same thing. The icons stay in the unread and your posts pages.
I have just tested it again on SMF2.0 RC3 and SMF2.0 RC4, and the mod works fine. The message icons cannot be seen anywhere in message index, post, recent (unread posts and replies) and display.
Just in case you were confused, there are three of them at the download page. You will need to use only this one i.e. to only remove message icon: RemoveMessageIcon111.zip (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=2710;id=161645).
Please ensure that you uninstalled the previous one and delete it when you have uninstalled.

I did. It doesn't work in the view unread posts page. And I used the RemoveHotTopic&MessageIcon version, since I wanted to get rid of both. You did update that one too, didn't you?
Yes. I updated that too. The mod file is named as RemoveHotTopic&MessageIcon111.zip (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=2710;id=161646).
I just downloaded it again from the mod site and tested it again minutes ago on SMF2.0 RC3 and SMF2.0 RC4. The mod is working fine. All hot topic icons and message icons and their columns are totally removed in all message index, unread posts, unread replies, post, and display page.
I am not sure why you are still facing that as I face no such problem at all. Are you using default theme or other custom theme?
thanks for this mod. i always HATED those icons. nobody knows what they mean, they take up space, and they clutter the UI. furthermore, the icons themselves don't look very good at all. for a look at how this mod makes a forum look, click here (http://www.coastgab.com/).
Thanks for using and liking it. With number of replies and views columns, one would agree that there is no necessity for hot topic icons especially when it has its own dedicated (unnecessary) column.

Yeah, of course I didn't doubt it working for you, but for some reason it didn't for us. Today, we also decided to try just the RemoveMessageIcon mod, so we uninstalled RemoveHotTopic&MessageIcon111, but for some reason weren't able to install the RemoveMessageIcon any more - it fails the test in ./Themes/default/Post.template.php

You might have changed this lines before that is why it cannot be modified using package manager. A single blank space or line add up or deletion could caused that error. Anyway, find it from 186-208:

And a little advise, try learning how to parse at the download page so that you will know how to troubleshoot installation of any mod should you face problems in the future. Thank you for informing at the very last minutes but I already finished with the manual changes so I guess I won't need to reply you anything further on this. I guess you will just need to restore your original file to achieve this on your own.

I presume you're feeling frustrated for the useless work? I'm sorry, I just originally missed this part: "I take it that you want to remove both hot topic & message icons)." -- I thought I had said it more clearly than I apparently did that I'd first like to get all traces of the mod removed, before doing anything else.
All this time you are talking about installation and claimed that it is not working though everybody else is installing it just fine and got it working fine too. So, I guess there is no point I am arguing with you on that and straight away help you with it, manually. It costs me some time but back then I was thinking of helping, even to the extend of manually editing files too. Unfortunately, some people do take for granted other people's time of helping.
So, if you want to restore, you should know that SMF do keep a backup automatically in your forumroot/Packages/backups folder. Find the backup in a compressed format file by the name of the mod. Make sure you get the right file (based on date and time to be exact). Extract the file to forum root either by copy and extract it there OR use cPanel file manager to extract the file on forum root.

I tried installing this on a fresh SMF 1.1.12 (with no other mods installed prior to this mod) and i get this error:
Failed ./Themes/default/Recent.template.php
Can you please fix this? I have been going crazy by uninstalling all my other mods on my live forum, until there were no mods installed but it still gave me this error. So, i set up a fresh SMF installation and it still gave me this installation error, so there is no doubt that a little bit of code is not quite right somewhere. Hopefully someone can help to figure this out.

I can see you have a package parser and so is SMF. Why don't you use it. Currently this mod is locked at the mod site for reasons I do not know. So, not many I can do.

By the way, the file that I have attached prior to the above reply i.e. RemoveHotTopic&MessageIcon111.zip remove both Hot Topic & Message Icon is tested and was meant for you. Why is there so many questions about removing them individually when you can remove both at once? Just use this one mod to remove both icons.
I used the updated package you attached to your reply and it still gives me an error when installing, which is why i suggested something simpler as i do not use the hot topics column at all and it's cluttering the screen unnecessarily. Some of my members like to use message icons, so i decided to leave it for now.
I can help you manually removing them provided all relevant files are attached here. I'll show which codes to be removed or changed here then. This is simply because even many say they are using default, they have made changes to that default files and most of the times due to that one or two lines or codes are missing and will show error during installation.
I believe you should make your mod strictly compatible with only SMF 1.1.12 and SMF 2.0 RC4. Start by the former. Any other variations in the 1.1.x and 2.0 branch should NOT be considered, to avoid wasting the potential of this mod.

I take that back. It works for the unread/new replies and when you click on the forum to view topics, but it messed up the inside of the topics. Meaning the signature is now about 75% instead of 100% of the width. I've included screenshots. Hopefully you can help as it's a very lovely mod.
Maybe it's finally time to fix this mod as 1.1.13 and RC5 is out.
Interesting mod.. ever thought about making it a user-option? Those users that prefer to not see hot/message icons could simply turn it off.
Yep, Bloc is already using this as a custom feature in his themes, but it would be great if this mod would enable these features across all themes.
I am looking into this and hopefully I will return the user choices for it in next update and rectify the highlighted problems. Again, this mod is nothing fancy. Just a simple mod for those who dislike the unnecessary icons there. A separate zip for each version of SMF is a maybe. ;D

i only use about 8 mods... but of those 8, this was the only one broken by the upgrade to RC5... sooo, it wasn't too terrible as far as breaking mods goes.
i really like this mod because i think all of those little icons make the forum look too busy, and i think most users have no idea wtf those icons mean. they're pointless, and they look rather 1998.
I found that if I didn't apply the MOD to any themes just the default that it worked fine. :)

I have been trying to get rid of those annoying hot topics columns for a long time. Hopefully a proper (working) version for 1.1.13 and RC5 is released soon.

i forgot to mention that this mod does still work on RC5 if you apply it to the default theme and THEN enable your custom theme. i saw someone else had mentioned this workaround earlier in the thread... and i finally got around to trying it... and whatta ya know! it worked.
im running 1.1.14
tried emulating 12, but i get errors on both file edits.
mind you i as well parsed the files, but could not find the text that needed edited.
probably due to the fact i have made a ton of edits to my default theme.
so i have attached both files that need edited,
and was hoping someone would be so gracious to point out the edits i need to make

This mod is actually buggy and has never been fixed, as "i don't have time" is a very common line around here. Sorry to read about time management issues, Ahrasis, but i think this mod should be removed as it's comparable to a beta release.

ahrasis... i think this mod is great. it worked wonderfully on previous RC versions of the software, but i can't get it to work in 2.0 gold. i sure do hope you'll consider updating this mod. it made my forum look so good and clean. either way, thanks for your contributions to SMF.
I am in the process of updating this mod and few others. Since there is various critics, I need to make sure it works well before I release a new updates.

i installed the updated version on 2.0 gold, and the installation is failing in:

i am using crip's "BR Finale" theme. any suggestions?

As noted earlier, it won't work across themes. Thus, manual edit is needed in such a case.

Mm, I installed the Message Icons mod, but something went wrong. At first it worked, then I refreshed the page again, and kaboom! The message icon reappeared, and it's column was huge, and all the other columns were messed up. Then I "reverse installed" it, by attempting to uninstall it, but adding the code that the uninstaller will remove - in other words, I made the changes that the uninstaller would un-make.
So I got it working, but I reckon the problem was caused by the installer package.
Great mod by the way. Now I just gotta figure out how to remove the message icon from PortaMx.

Can anyone confirm that this works on v2.0.1? I'm getting one error when trying to install:

SMF 2.0.1 only includes minor edits, and none of those edits affect this mod. That error of yours is definitely caused by conflict with another mod. You'll have to manually edit the MessageIndex.template.php file.

That is not what the mod should do. It doesn't remove that menu button. It just remove hot topic and/or message icons (depending on which package you chose). I am not sure how to remove that second menu button but I can surely check it for you.

those errors were generated using 1.3 and after i posted that screenshot, i upgraded to 1.4.
The obvious next question being did you get the same errors after upgrading ...
I just want to make sure of the version as I might overlook something while from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4. My guess is that it is repeating eventhough he is using the latest version. $context though is globalized, have been seen to cause undefined index error since it is source/template specific. As such I am removing $context['icon_url'] while updating the mod to 1.1.5 version.

Agreed. I see no purpose in them anymore.
Hot topic icons were removed from 2.1, message icons were not (because people do actually use that)

well, i'll admit i'm quite minimalist. on my forum, i don't even display signatures, personal text, post counts, etc... very clean and simple, but many people have told me it's the uncluttered overall appearance that really made them enjoy using the forum. everybody's different, though... and all of this stuff can be changed to one's liking, which is all that matters.
hi there. i have the following repeating entry in my cpanel error log:

since that's the folder where all of these little message icons reside, could the error be related to this mod?
I think that means gif file is wrongly name or missing but it doesn't seem to relate to this mod. Please check your SMF error log for any trace of error from this mod, if any.

no entries in the smf error log that pertain to rhtami.
the problem is something is calling ".gif"... a file name that's nonexistent. it's being called from multiple pages on the forum, so it looks to be something that happens with each page load. i just don't know how to go about determining what's calling it.
Can you list your mods? May be we can check which mod is the culprit from the list.

Sorry, I just saw this. After almost 8 years of modding and hacking my forum, I decided to just do a clean installation of SMF. It was time. There were several things that weren't right. All is fine now. Thx.

I'm testing out how the mods I currently use, work with the new theme I am planning to use and think I've stumbled upon something that hopefully is just a quick fix!
Basically using the mod with the theme "Redsy" causes the body / icons to display strangely, with huge spacing issues.
.. it seems to work fine on locked and stickied posts but not for "normal" ones.

The mod especially hook version is designed for default template. I believe that theme is new. I suggest you tried out old version 111. Highlight any error(s) during installation in here.

I tried manually making the edits but that caused another sort of weird issue with how it was displayed, but with further playing around, I've found the the theme seems to sort of rely on the "<td></td>" line before the "<td class="icon2 ', $color_class, '">" to display correctly..

This at least removes the actual icons but their column remains.. it kinda does the job I guess, but if I could drop that column without messing up the display for the rest that would be preferred! O:)
If you are using only Redsy theme for your site and want to remove the hot topic / message icon using hook version of this mod, then open RHTAMI.subs.php. Change $color_class = 'windowbg' to $color_class = 'windowbg4'.

All mods are made for default theme and never meant for others. If they work, it is a bonus. If they do not, you have to make adjustments to that mods.

No problem. As an extra note to help you, you should try to use the old, non-hook version. There you can see error(s) during installation. Fix that error(s) or report them here so you should be able to get the right help to remove Hot Topic and Message Icons manually.
I have RHTAMI 1.1.6 installed in SMF 2.0.15, and the "Remove message icons" option is on, while the option for " Remove hot topic icons" is off.
But somehow both Message icons AND Hot Topic icons are gone.
Is this a bug in this mod?

Thanks, at least I know I'm not the only one that got all of these errors.
In the meantime I removed this mod entirely, and getting actually quite used to all of these funny icons everywhere... ;)

I could never get used to that. On my forum, nobody knows what the icons mean and I can guarantee you nobody missed them after they were removed. I think they just make the forum look awful and cluttered. I'm pretty minimalist on these things, though. I don't even allow signatures, colored text or the usual doodads that show up under avatars on 99% of the forums out there. Keeps things looking clean.

I agree, I liked the forum much better with the clutter of all of these icons.
But the Hook version throws lots of errors, and the 1.1.1 throw errors when I want to install them.
So I will have to invest some time in them, time I don't have right now... :(
