Otsikko: newb questions about doing backup before upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: Hotrats - marraskuu 12, 2010, 10:39:25 IP
excuse my profound ignorance - I'm like a deer frozen in the headlights when it comes to upgrading a forum and managing databases ... I'm conceptually useless / if I may I'd like to ask a few questions, maybe your answers will help get going here

(i) I'm running 1.1.10 and am not sure if I have to upgrade to 1.1.11 first and then 1.1.12 or if I can go directly to 1.1.12 ... also I don't understand why there's a recent 1.1.12 and older 2.0 version ? what should I go for ??

(ii) i've got ssl for my forum ... and so i need to go through https
(i was told it would give me more security) ... should I undo this, will it cause problems ?

(iii) I'm worried about loosing my theme and other plugins ... is it possible to copy my database and practice on the copy first ? dunno if this makes sense / and not sure how to do this either

thx much!

For not losing what you have now,you can use update packages and you should do it step by step

1.1.10-> 1.1.11 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/downloads/smf_patch_1.0.19_1.1.11.zip) & 1.1.11 -> 1.1.12 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/downloads/smf_patch_1.0.20_1.1.12.tar.gz) ,update packages can be found here (http://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) and installed like a normal modification

thanks for the info

I assume you mean by using the Package Manager from within the forum ?!

let me ask you, since I don't get the whole database backup thing, is it ok to simply download a copy of my forum folder or do I need to do a copy of my whole root folder (ie., public_html) ?

I assume that if something screws up for me I can simply delete the corrupt folder and upload its prior copy ? or is there more to it ??

tia

if you dont do a database backup the file backup will be almost useless as you will have no data to restore if something go very wrong. How do I backup my database? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=492.0)

I went through the info a couple of times and end up with a 1.3Mb file on a database that's over 500Meg.

Not sure I get what I'm supposed to be doing, shouldn't I have one big file downloaded to my computer ?

"Click on a database or table name in the left frame, the properties will be displayed. Then on the menu, click "Export", you can dump the structure, the data, or both. This will generate standard SQL statements that can be used to recreate your database/table.

maybe what you're saying is save this "SQL statement" file AND the folders in my public_html folder ... ?

Did you try the database backup directly from the forum admin panel?
On a database that size, it might not work correctly -
even more probably it will fail if you use gzip to pack it as well.
You might want to try and verufy the contents of the file you were able to download.

But yes - to have a complete backup you need the files, and the Database backup.
The files are "optional" but include all the avatars, attachments etc, the database is what holds
all your members, posts, stats, settings, etc...

yep, I tried doing a data base bu from the admin panel ... I get a 1.3Mb text file regardless of if I ask for table structure or table data ... (not getting the data)

and also this http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=492.0 (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=492.0) isn't working for me ... using the export function also gives me a 1.3Mb text file ...

sorry to be a pain / what am I not doing right ?

To backup everything is actually dead easy.

Even I can do it!

Does your site have CPanel?

If so, go to CPanel>Files.

Click "Backups".

Where it says "Download a Home Directory Backup", click "Home directory", just underneath.

That will let you download a full backup of your whole site.

Under that, you'll see "Download a MySQL Database Backup".

Under that, you'll see "Databases".

Click the name of the database, just below that, and you'll get the database to download.

Sorted. :)

You can restore both from the same place.

that part is missing for me. just above it says Partial backups, and to the right it says Restore a Home Directory backup. but the Download a Home Directory window is not there / it's just a blank area.

curious, is there some sort of encryption that goes on when using cpanel to backup the data or can I just ftp myself the whole home folder directly ?!

also, how do I verify/test that the downloaded database file is ok

thx again

Yes, you can FTP the whole thing. That's just as good.

In essence, though, it's the database that's crucial. That's where all your members, posts, etc. are stored.

You can rebuild a forum, from scratch, if you want/need to. You can't rebuild the database.

Kirjoitti: Hotrats - marraskuu 23, 2010, 04:10:51 IP
ok, so my database backup should be a pretty large file then, correct ?!
all I get right now is a text file that shows thread titles and that's all ...

my cpanel says it can't do a full backup because my site is over 500Mb, instructing me to go use myPhpAdmin, which gave me the same .sql text file with thread titles only in it

from doing a little snooping it looks like my site provider (Siteground) has arranged it so I have to pay them to do a backup (I'm on a shared server). does this sound right ?
Otsikko: Re: newb questions about upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: kat - marraskuu 23, 2010, 04:16:52 IP
The database won't be anything like as big as the files backup.

My forum's 300 meg, yet my database is only 10 meg.

Will it allow you to backup just the database?

You can, as has been said, backup the actual files via FTP.

Siteground sound... er... crap. ;)

please answer me this, is the database a single text file ?

in other words, should I be able to "read" all the messages with a text editor ?

how do I "know" that the database download is done right / is correct ??

---

I'm afraid I'm being confused by "database structure", "database table" and "database" ...
Otsikko: Re: newb questions about upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: Illori - marraskuu 23, 2010, 06:21:20 IP
when you get your "dump" of the database it will be a file ending in .sql it should be able to be opened in a text editor and be read.
Otsikko: Re: newb questions about doing backup before upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: JimM - marraskuu 23, 2010, 09:39:31 IP
When viewing the database backup, look for and end tag.  If you see that, the backup is complete.  If the file just stops with no end tag, then it is probably not complete.
Otsikko: Re: newb questions about doing backup before upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: Hotrats - marraskuu 23, 2010, 10:57:24 IP
major thanks for clarifying this for me ...

this is what I get at the end of the file:

Lainaa
   (138, 1, 15, 1063, 1063, 1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 0);
# --------------------------------------------------------

# Done

and I can read everything in it (post text and other things ...) using a text editor
so everything looks good at this point from what you're saying

---

so to recap,

I originally created a database for my forum, that forum has support files that "all" live inside public_html/forum folder.  So to do a "full" backup all I need is a copy of that forum folder and this database.sql file

thx so much for all your help  ... :)

Thats right, files and full sql backup and you have everything you need :)

The software is actually offering you a chance to install the patches one at a time, by just clicking that link.
First it will offer .11 and after that install, it will offer .12 :)

First you should try installing them trough that link offerred, and if it gives any errors - don't go through with it, but let us know what errors it gives.

thanks for replying to my deleted comments, I went ahead and did it while you were replying

test were successful in both cases ... un-installed a spider mod first
I'm now running 1.1.12 and somehow my forum didn't explode
still looks the same, etc .. give me a few days to do some more testing before I close this topic

thanks a Million !!! ... I'm stoked

btw, what is the advantage of 2.0RC1 over 1.1.1x ?
Otsikko: Re: newb questions about doing backup before upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen - marraskuu 24, 2010, 05:31:53 AP
Sure, let us know if you do run in to any trouble :)

EDIT:

Oh, and 2.0 is actually up to RC4 - and probably at this point, you would be best of waiting for final before upgrading from 1.1 IMO, but of course it is up to you ;)
2.0 does bring much changes, and improvements - this forum you are reading now, is on 2.0 :)
Otsikko: Re: newb questions about doing backup before upgrading/updating
Kirjoitti: kat - marraskuu 24, 2010, 12:15:29 IP
I agree with Lex. Wait for v2 to go Final. (And wait until everyone else has figured-out all the hassles, too)

Glad you got everything sorted, Ratty! :)

Hot Zits !!!

three mods later and the forums seems to be working great

my forum looks awesome with youtube windows showing instead of link headers
overall theme and settings didn't seem to be changed in any way (f'A+)

all this has given me a big boost in confidence
I thank you all, including the developers // didn't mean to doubt anybody's great work
