I have my first simple machines forum up and live. I am very happy with it, but after 3 months there are 21,644 members. Not surprisingly, spam.
I have looked through the info I could find, but have had little luck.
How do I prevent members from having outbound links? Is it possible to strip outbound links from the existing posts? If so, how do I strip out the links?
what version of smf are you using? have you looked at the existing mods to see if one already exists?
Hi Illori,
I have version 1.1.11.
What mod would you recommend to remove links?
Kind regards,
J
check here http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/ i bet you will find one or more. I dont need one for my forum so i dont know one.
1.1.12 is out, and could include security measures :)
Thanks, all. I have asked GoDaddy to update to the new version (presently offers only 1.1.11, go figure). I have gone to the mods link and found a mod or two I will use once I am done backing up the database.
Adding a mod looks pretty straightforward, hopefully I have permissions within my own hosting account to reach the correct documents.
you can upgrade it yourself i would be surprised if your host helped in the process at all. Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)
I use the Anti-Spam Verification Questions (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516) and Anti Spam (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1095) mods and those seem to nobble 99% of spammers. They'll install on 1.1.12. I think these are better than going for a less legible captcha, which is often difficult for legit members to read.
