I looked for a discussion on this throughout the community but didn't really find one. How do you decide when to upgrade?? I currently have version 1.1.12 on my site BUT found a 2.0 RC 1theme i would REALLY LOVE to use. My site is fairly new so i wouldn't be losing much on there (other then some mods i've installed). So how do you decide to upgrade?? I don't know MUCH about the different two, but am learning as i go. Is version 2.0 "stable" enough to run smoothly as i understand it to still be in the "beta" stage (not sure what that means, but am guessing the test & trial phase). Is that the case for ALL the 2.0 versions or just RC4... Please Help, every comment is GREATLY appreciated.
I have a 1 site, and I think it's fine. That being said, the sooner you decide to upgrade, probably the better (for you). Less to do, fewer mods to deal with, etc.
At this point, I would honestly just wait for SMF 2.0 Final. It shouldn't be too much longer - And then you won't have to update everything twice.
But, SMF 2.0 RC4 is a lot better than 1.1.12.
thank you for the advice. i think i would prefer to update to(in the near future) that's why i rather do the upgrade now, at least to 2.0 RC1 but am not sure how!! i was attempting to upgrade to 2.0 RC4 using webinstall but after everything was done it said
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /home/username/public_html/webinstall.php:2) in /home/username/public_html/webinstall.php on line 911
i don't know what that means, can anyone break it down for me in human terms?
Hello,
I'm also considering an upgrade from 1.1.2 to 2.0rc4, and I would like to know where I can find a comparison between 1.1.2 and 2.0 ? There is the changelog, but it's difficult to see with all the bug fixes which are also in it . Also, Is there a lot of change in themes structure between 1.1.2 and 2.0 ? My theme is quite customized and I wouldn't like to lost it :) ( http://www.clicletruc.org/ ). Thank you
nugene the webinstall does not work on all servers you may have to install it manually.
there is no official comparison on the features difference in the 1 versions.
these might help on the theme question

Thank You, I'm going to read that. In fact, since I can have a subdomain for my website, I've created one and I'm going to adapt my theme with it. There is obviously a lot of changes to do.

I agree! :D
SMF 2.0 have some useful options that SMF 1.1.x doesn't. have.
Not looking forward to th upgrade, dealing with the mods, etc. Wish I'd started out with even a slightly unstable SMF 2

SMF 2.0 is very stable. I don't see how it's unstable.
Deciding when to upgrade is a personal decision that you make depending sometimes on your level of expertise or how daring you are. :P
2.0 is still in a RC version so each time a new RC is released, you would need to overwrite all your forum files and reinstall all your mods. If that is something you enjoy doing, then go for it. If you only want to do that once, then you might want to wait for the gold version.
For every reason not to upgrade there is a corresponding reason to upgrade. :)

But feature are frozen and I can start adapting my theme and check my plugins on a test install to be ready when the final release arrives, I'm right ?
Sure you can. That's the point. It's a personal decision that may take a different path for everyone.
