I am very afraid to make this upgrade I have heard so many horror stories. We have tens of thousands of posts and many mods like ad seller. What kind of danger am I in trying to do this?

How do I backup my database? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=492.0)
I strongly advice you to make a backup of your FTP files too. :)
I strongly advice you tell your members to not go online while the upgrade continues. :P
Less server stress = faster upgrade, no?

If you will make a backup of your database and files as indicated above you will be in no danger at all.

Yes. I corrected my post. Thank you for reminding me :)
no danger at all about your posts (although, as stated, you should always take a backup)
The mods, on the other hand, will need to be re-installed after the upgrade.
(oh, and note: you can upgrade from RC2 to RC4 directly, no need to go through RC3)
